Anyone creative here to help with business name?

Hi!

Hope you don't mind my asking for opinions/ help.

I'm looking to set up a professional seamstress service in my area (am qualified, BA fashion-womenswear).
One of the unique selling points of my service will be to collect/drop off, I won't have a premises as such. Just my house. I'll do refitting, up-cycling, bespoke made to measure, repairs, re-lining, those sorts of things.

I'm looking to promote via local Facebook pages, local ads, have a FB and Instagram page.

So! My real name initials are CF, (yeah unfortunate I know) so I'll avoid initials anyway. My real name is Not Catherine Fardo, but for this post I'll use that name.

I did think of "Catherine's Clothing Care" which I thought was nice, but someone pointed out that it sounds like a laundry service rather than quality seamstress work. So I then thought of "Catherine Fardo Couture" but that might be a bit too high-end considering I'll be mostly doing hems and repairs... "Catherine Fardo's professional seamstress service" sounds a bit blah but might have to do!

Are any of these ok? Otherwise I'm a bit stuck now so if anyone has any ideas... Please share!

What about Fardo Style & Tailoring? A sort of byline could say "bespoke tailoring and alteration service"

I don't think you can fit delivery into your title, but emphasise in the byline that it's delivered to your door.

Catherine's Atelier

I love it but it gives the impression there is an atelier that potential customers can visit.

I was advised that when setting up a business you shouldn’t use your name. A business is more scalable if it’s not under your name, if you do well you can hire more people to work for you, and the company isn’t tied to your personal reputation. And if you want to sell the business in ten years time, nobody is going to buy Catherine Fardo Tailoring to run themselves. They’re more likely to buy Stitches because it isn’t tied to a single person.

WhyIsBogdanSexy · 15/03/2023 11:59

I'd not use your name if it doesn't fit in well. I'd choose either

  • a 'stylish' name made of words that is fashionable just now. Blade and Rose, Bloom and Wild, that sort of thing. Could you pick something like that? Violet Threads or Bird and Bee Tailor or something that just sounds quite nice.
  • something that has your name but is maybe 'by' you. Threads by Catherine. Catherine Sews.

and then I'd have a by-line that contained words like bespoke tailored upcycled to give an indication of your services.

good luck

Also agree with using a local reference but not the town name necessarily. Eg we have an old Abbey in our town so I'd choose something like the Abbey Tailor or something.

These are all so, so great!
Lots to think about. Thank you!

I think tying in the location is a great idea, and I hadn't thought of dropping the name entirely.

I think you need to keep it as simple as possible, a clever fun pun is great for people who like puns, but customers won't necessarily remember it, identify with it, or potential customers find you when searching online for what you do. You can inject the personality of the business in the identity and branding.

Also a good point about making your business scaleable, and should you ever want to pass it on, you could set up The Nottingham Seamstress, The Truro Seamstress etc. I think using your name is fine if you're looking to create a job for you, rather than a business, otherwise use the opportunity of including what you do and where you do it in the name.

Good luck!

Funny enough I was having a conversation with my Dd the other day and I suggested she finds a good seamstress for herself. We were discussing major alterations to a wedding type of dress.

So perhaps Alterations and Tailoring should be in the title.

Where are you based, by the way?

TokyoSushi · 15/03/2023 13:22

Something with the place name would be nice, ours would be The Cheshire Seamstress for example.

Anything too high end probably makes people think you're too expensive and puts them off. Agree FB is a good idea, loads on ours at the moment 'does anybody know who could alter my daughters prom dress' and the like. See if you can join some local Mum's FB groups, that's where the questions usually are!

Good luck!
