Anyone creative here to help with business name?

Hi!

Hope you don't mind my asking for opinions/ help.

I'm looking to set up a professional seamstress service in my area (am qualified, BA fashion-womenswear).
One of the unique selling points of my service will be to collect/drop off, I won't have a premises as such. Just my house. I'll do refitting, up-cycling, bespoke made to measure, repairs, re-lining, those sorts of things.

I'm looking to promote via local Facebook pages, local ads, have a FB and Instagram page.

So! My real name initials are CF, (yeah unfortunate I know) so I'll avoid initials anyway. My real name is Not Catherine Fardo, but for this post I'll use that name.

I did think of "Catherine's Clothing Care" which I thought was nice, but someone pointed out that it sounds like a laundry service rather than quality seamstress work. So I then thought of "Catherine Fardo Couture" but that might be a bit too high-end considering I'll be mostly doing hems and repairs... "Catherine Fardo's professional seamstress service" sounds a bit blah but might have to do!

Are any of these ok? Otherwise I'm a bit stuck now so if anyone has any ideas... Please share!

Cat's Tailoring

Then you could do a cute cat logo - feel free to ignore me as I can be quite naff 😀

Circumferences · 15/03/2023 16:12

catinboooots Haha oh dear I have 2 cats don't start me off I'll end up using "kitty's stripy sewing basket" or something!

Isheabastard Fab, I hope she finds someone! I've recently finished a wedding dress alteration, about 10 layers of skirt needed taking up 🙄 😂 and taking in at the bust. Everyone keeps telling me I should promote myself more officially.

I don't mind saying I'm in the Peak District. (Nevermind possibly outing myself!). There isn't really anyone else out here doing this, people need to go into Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester etc for Tayloring/Alterations.

Those of you who suggested using location in the name - brilliant! So much more interesting that CF whatever.

Usually round here anything with "Peak District" in front of it is something to do with sports or outdoorsy stuff. I did think of "High Peak Clothing Rescue" (play on HP Mountain Rescue!) but.. maybe not 😂

I'm near a river so perhaps "Riverside Tayloring and Alterations"

I love the witchy theme but it's too unconventional !
"Seamstress of the White Peak" has quite a charm to it maybe.

The White Peak Seamster ?

Anyway I'll be thinking about this further and thanks so so much so far!
(I'll let you know what I go for if I ever do!)

I like the ones using your name.
What do you mean that a unique part of the service is pick up / drop off? Do you mean that you will be going round to people’s houses to get the garments/ measurements and then doing the work back at your house.

I was advised that when setting up a business you shouldn’t use your name. A business is more scalable if it’s not under your name, if you do well you can hire more people to work for you, and the company isn’t tied to your personal reputation. And if you want to sell the business in ten years time, nobody is going to buy Catherine Fardo Tailoring to run themselves. They’re more likely to buy Stitches because it isn’t tied to a single person.

In the large scale world of branding this isn't the case.. smaller cases like David Lloyd, larger scale Gucci etc.

Most time the name in a brand means personal service and care and consideration.

Couture to Door?

But I like the simple ones. Your name followed by the service you provide with door to door service highlighted.

Including a location name in your brand name (or if you really don't do so, at least the strapline) will help with SEO so if you're going to be focused on online leads as well as word of mouth then don't be over tempted by pun names.

People often suggest them on here because they are fun and sometimes clever but they don't help funnel leads to your business, which is absolutely vital for a new business.

Think what someone would Google if they needed your services. For example hairdresser in Lichfield is going to appear so much higher in search results if they were called Lichfield Hair than if they had a fun / pun name. If someone needs their hair doing there, that's what they'll Google.

The more mentions you get using that name on different sites (reviews, profiles, PR coverage), the more your ranking will be boosted so the more people will see you in their results.

So working backwards from how people will find you and thinking about how quickly that name explains what you do is key.

Good luck with your business, I really hope it's a success - getting started is such an exciting time! Flowers

Peak District Sewing and Alterations - quality seamstress service with free collection and delivery within 15 miles of abc town

googgodno · 16/03/2023 02:13

At the risk of sounding like a knob, it's tailoring not tayloring.

Spelling is important. Forget the funny, punny names if you want to appear at the top of any searches online.

Think about what you would search for if you were a bride looking for alterations or similar.

"River Stichter"

I mean 🤣 this is why MN is not your friend. People will tell you anything, ffs

OriginalUsername2 · 16/03/2023 02:18

For SEO purposes don’t go with a cutesy name. Choose something that literally describes what you do. Think of what your prospective customers would type into Google if they needed that service.

sashh · 16/03/2023 03:37

Catherine's mobile tailoring and alterations.

I know it isn't sexy or fancy but it does what it ways on the tin.

It's also what I would put in google to find a service like that.

Definitely no puns. They sound old fashioned and cheesy imo.
I like verylowbatterys. It is clear what you do and nice and simple.

I found the place I go to through reading Google reviews of the places near me. I asked on Nextdoor too and the firm I liked the reviews for was mentioned a lot. They proved to be really good. I hope you do really well. You should do if there’s no other service.

Rina66 · 16/03/2023 06:26

I'd be wary of using the home visit part of your service in your business name in case you find that in time it's not cost effective to be doing that.
