Does this ring look too much like an engagement ring?

I’d like to buy something special with some inheritance. I love this ring but is it too engagement-y?

I am really stuck on where to look for something classic but still a bit individual, any pointers appreciated!

If you don't wear it on your engagement finger, it's just a ring. Get it if you like it. Many people wear non-engagement diamond rings on the ring finger of the right hand.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/03/2023 23:19

It's lovely. Just don't wear it on your engagement finger and then it's not an engagement ring Wink

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2023 23:19

Yes, I think it does look like an engagement ring. It'd be OK worn on your right hand instead, maybe?

NavyCurtains · 14/03/2023 23:19

It does look like an engagement ring, but why should it matter? It's what you think that matters. Who are you pleasing.. yourself or others? If you like it, buy it. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

Whatisthisanyidea · 14/03/2023 23:20

Any diamond ring could look like an engagement ring.

That’s a lot of money for a fake diamond.

Try some independent Jewelry makers - Birmingham Jewellery quarter is a good start.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/03/2023 02:37

It's fine, my auntie bought herself diamond rings for her non wedding fingers and they just looked pretty.
I'd look at independent jewellers though for something a bit different. I have a gorgeous ring I wear that came from one and it's nice to have something a bit different.

Lovingmynewbicycle · 15/03/2023 02:44

I also would not pay this much for a fake diamond.

What about some colour - emerald or ruby, say?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 15/03/2023 07:18

It does but the biggest problem is that it’s quite small.

Luckingfovely · 15/03/2023 07:53

That is a ludicrous price for a lab diamond - don't buy that!

I'd browse websites for inspo and then go to a local jeweller and have it made, so that you are not paying 60%+ mark up for the brand. You'll get something for more personal, unique, and for decent value that way.

I'd start with Tiffany for ideas if you want a classic diamond ring.

Luckingfovely · 15/03/2023 07:54

Also - there's a recent engagement ring thread on here, probably in S&B - full of ideas and recommendations!

Nolosomi · 15/03/2023 08:00

It’s pretty and doesn’t matter if it looks ‘engagementy’ but I wouldn’t buy a lab diamond. If you look at second hand rings look for pre 1950’s - art deco, the designs are beautiful and unusual. You’ll get a lot more for your money!

Some people prefer lab-grown diamonds because they are ethically more acceptable. They are real diamonds.

LiftyLift · 15/03/2023 08:04

Have a look at Katherine James. Have ordered from her before and bought a stunning ring. Came in great packaging too.

This. They also sparkle as much as the most expensive diamonds, that I would never be able to afford. I have lovely lab grown diamond earrings.

faffadoodledo · 15/03/2023 08:04

I've seen some beautiful second hand rings lately. I don't think they're much cheaper than new - maybe a little though. You might even get a small eternity ring for that money
I see theyre lab grown diamonds. I wouldn't buy new real diamonds these days anyway because of what mining does to the environment but there are plenty of really nice vintage ones on the market.

GrumpyPanda · 15/03/2023 08:21

Second pp on either second hand or start by looking around local artisan jewelry makers. I've got a few individually made pieces bought at small private exhibitions. Prices comparable (cheaper actually, but this was a few years ago) and the style was much more individual.

Luckingfovely · 15/03/2023 08:27

I am absolutely pro lab-grown diamonds - just not at that crazy price, which is the point most people were making, I think.

purpledalmation · 15/03/2023 08:28

Yea, it's lovely but very like an engagement ring.

Appleblum · 15/03/2023 08:31

Don't be fleeced!!! Lab diamonds do not cost £48k!!!

You could get a ring with similar specs for less than 1k from a reputable independent jeweller.

GoldDuster · 15/03/2023 08:35

It does look like an engagement ring, but if you like it, that's all that matters.

If you prefer lab diamonds for ethical reasons, maybe consider a vintage ring, the value is likely to increase rather than decrease as soon as you get it out of the shop, which would be a good shout if you're looking to buy it with inheritance and then maybe pass it on.

It's £1300? Not 48k

Christmascracker0 · 15/03/2023 10:07

Thanks all. Yes I would prefer lab grown or vintage diamonds, so maybe vintage is a better route to take.

Lab grown diamonds are real. I don't know why people think they aren't. They are also far more ethical and environmentally friendly than the mined type.

I think that ring would look lovely worn on your right hand. But who cares what anyone thinks. It's so personal to you. My engagement ring looks nothing like the usual types but I loved it when I saw it and my new husband later surprised me with it.

There's a lot to be said for non-conformity.

HyggeTygge · 15/03/2023 10:34

It's gorgeous - and I don't often think that about rings!

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. It would only be fake if it was something like CZ pretending to be a diamond, which it isn't - it's a diamond and no different to any mined diamond, except ethically better. Vintage is also a good call, but this being lab would make no difference to my decision to buy, whatsoever.
