Can you/do you wear your hair scraped back?

I noticed a lot of stars at the Oscars last night wore their hair up or scraped back off their face and they looked really glamorous and stunning. I know they generally have beautiful symmetrical faces but I see normal women out and about with a centre parting, scraped back hair and small bun and they look fab.

It doesn’t suit me at all! Maybe it’s my hairline or large nose on a small face, I don’t know. It would be great to wear it on a day it needs washing but even around the house it looks awful. I think I look better with hair!

I look good with my hair up, but not "scraped back". I'd look like the ageing love child of a boiled potato and Waynetta Slob.

Isn’t it better to not wash hair before putting it up? I thought freshly washed hair didn’t hold in place as well?

Mine can only be put up when it's freshly washed and damp. Any other time and it all falls down. My daughter's hair is the same. We both have very thick straight hair.

NortieTortie · 13/03/2023 13:49

No, I have thinning hair on my temples. I try to cover that as much as I can!

AlwaysTheGoodGirl · 13/03/2023 14:07

A lot of women, well more so younger women, can look amazing with this hairstyle, but it completely depends on the hair line you have. Mine starts so far back I look like bloody Andy Carroll 😩

mummy3today · 13/03/2023 14:35

@WomanStanleyWoman2 it does differ depending on hair type but mostly no, fresh washed hair holds just fine.

But my main point was, no celeb is walking down a red carpet with greasy hair that needs a wash, so of course their hair looks better than op's when she wants to wear this style when her hair is overdue a wash

bellswithwhistles · 13/03/2023 14:39

I can look quite pretty with my hair loose.

With my hair up, I have enormous sticking out ears, a bizarre forehead and an enormous nose. And a double chin!

I can 100% guarantee if I tie my hair back, someone will ask if i'm ill!!!

Can you/do you wear your hair scraped back?
blobby10 · 13/03/2023 14:42

I don't wear it scraped back as I don't like the look on anyone, glam or not! It always looks incredibly painful and I would worry about receding hair lines if its done often (DD are you listening??!!!). However I wear a looseish ponytail most days now my hair is over long but my face definitely looks better with a fringe to break up the fat/roundness of it.

lewiscapaldi · 13/03/2023 15:01

I think people do look nice with a sleek bun when they've got a full face of makeup on, BUT they'd look even better with it down or in a longer style. (IMO)

I personally feel really gross with my hair like that, I think it takes away a bit of my femininity and it feels quite exposing!

TenoringBehind · 13/03/2023 15:11

No. I would look hideous.

moppatoppa · 13/03/2023 15:56

I look like a boy with my hair tied up.

I wouldn't even wear it up around my family. Blush

And I'm probably ok looking with it down straight or curled.. but up? No no.

I wish I did suit it up, would be a lot handier.

octoberafternoons · 13/03/2023 16:29

I always wear mine up but not particularly "scraped back". Having my hair down around my face really drags down my features and makes me look fatter than I am. My hair is also naturally straight and flat so looks awful in the typical British weather as it doesn't hold a curl or texture on a damp day at all.

Reddahlias · 13/03/2023 16:47

I always have a ponytail but it's not 'scraped back'!

My hair is is thin and just hangs around my face so I prefer it tied back

IggySlave · 13/03/2023 17:08

I do. Day to day I only wear a cc cream but if I scrape my hair back I do add contour/bronzer and maybe blusher aswell, as feel like my face is more exposed.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 13/03/2023 17:33

No, I look like an egg.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 13/03/2023 17:41

I do the centre part slick backed pony or bun but need to have dewy fresh skin make up and a pair of gold hoops to feel like I look nice,

Eranzer · 13/03/2023 17:51

Same here! I think it looks gorgeous on other people, it makes my head look like a thumb!

MissMogwai · 13/03/2023 17:53

Schmutter · 13/03/2023 12:48

I did when I was younger.

Now I’d look like Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris version).

Me too. I still do it when wfh or going to the gym though, I even wear a grey hoodie for the full effect. 🤣

eatdrinkandbemerry · 13/03/2023 18:29

I wear it up but definitely not scraped back as i have a huge forehead 🤣
I brush it and then sweep it back with my fingers so i have wispy bits to hide the old football head 😂

CaliforniaBody · 13/03/2023 18:30

I look nice with it but I don't suit a centre parting due to widows peak so swings and roundabouts. Celebs use make up to fill in hair gaps and use all the hair tricks available plus they are usually thin and young.

BMrs · 13/03/2023 18:56

I suffered with really bad hair loss the last couple of years so had no option but to wear my hair up and come up with inventive styles for special occasions. My hair is on the mend thankfully but will be a long process but im grateful my hair suits me up and slicked back so I've been able to get away with it.

AbsolutePixels · 13/03/2023 18:56

No, this isn't a flattering look for me due to a high forehead and uneven hairline. My jawline, nose and cheekbones aren't bad, so hair up looks nice, but I have a Bardot fringe to cover up the aforementioned problem areas.

StillMedusa · 13/03/2023 22:21

No, I have a big nose and a long face and with a pony tail I look like a Cockatoo Grin
I had very long hair til a few months ago... chopped it off and got a fringe and layers and look more human !

What is the evidence for traction alopecia? As opposed to genetics.

I was a redhead child and apparently redheads have thinner hair on top but each individual strand is thicker. Who knew! I have always worn my hair up and I think it's because after day 1 of washing it can look flat on top. And it is SO thick I don't think I could dedicate so much of my life to daily washing. I either do a high pony tail or more recently an attempt at a neat bun, and bring some wispy bits round my face. The part where my forehead joins hair has always been quite wispy and not really properly formed hair, so trying to make it behave like a fringe is a lot of work.

I personally think I have a massive forehead -GFs say no, one ex said I did. I do sometimes wear a sweeping side fringe and occasionally a centre parting but centre partings are not that flattering on an oval face like mine.

More recently I've started doing half ups, plaits, and experimenting with different clips. I learned that metal clips are amazign for thick hair. 42 years I took to find this out!

I'm thinking of going for a brazilian blowdry as apparently this makes it much easier to manage.

Strawberrypicnic · 13/03/2023 22:30

I like this style but I have fine hair and annoyingly it only looks right on me if my hair is freshly washed. Also my hairline isn't completely symmetrical so I need to leave a tiny bit of 'looseness' around the hairline or the asymmetry becomes very obvious. The very sleek, tightly scraped back look definitely doesn't suit everyone so you are not alone!

Bizarrely I'm a redhead with really fine fragile hair but lots of it! Each strand is barely there though
