Upper eyelid surgery

My eyelids are getting worse - so hooded the skin sits on my eyelashes. Eyeliner is pointless as in shadow - I sometimes wear waterline eyeliner. I'm in the south east, thinking if I would meet Nhs criteria or try to self fund. The very top of my vision there is like a slight greying which I think is my brow/lids.
Has anyone any advice either private or nhs? Before I start looking. Added complication is a medical condition and I would need to fund also pre-treatment if paying privately.

I had double upper blepharoplasty a month ago on the NHS. My optician asked me if I knew that my eye lids could be fixed (I didn't have a clue, thought it was something that I just had to live with). She then wrote to my GP who made a referral to the opthalmology dept at local hospital.

At the first appointment the consultant told me that they could only repair it if it was affecting my vision, they tested my peripheral vision and said it fulfilled the required criteria. It was another six months before I received the appointment, which I thought was great considering how busy the NHS is, my appointment was cancelled twice just before Christmas but I didn't have to wait long for another. Might be worth asking your GP or optician for help.
Good luck!

Oh that is really useful thank you. I will ask my optician at the next appointment. How do they test peripheral vision?

@OneFrenchEgg youre very welcome. I think it was called a visual field test, it was really simple, done in two parts. All I had to do was press a button when I saw dots appearing on a screen then they taped my eyelids up with steri strips and I had repeat the test. I was amazed at the difference when they showed me the print out, the consultant said it was a significant difference and I had a clear clinical need for tge surgery. BTW my lids were also covering my lashes too especially on my right eye.

OneFrenchEgg · 12/03/2023 16:17

This is how bad mine are, I will ask the optician first (nhs would be so much easier for medical as well as £££!)

I am booked in for September (the only time I can get 2 full weeks off) in Leeds. It's just under £1800 under local anaesthetic, I looked at a general but it increased the cost significantly. I have also been advised that a local is much easier to recover from. I approached my doctor and while he acknowledged that there is an issue, it isn't bad enough yet for the NHS to cover it so I am self funding.

Thank you - that is so much cheaper than local! Are you excited?

Yes!! I always look either tired or downright furious and I'm only 42

Secretboringsister · 12/03/2023 17:14

@Mimimayhem18 would you mind sending me a message with the name of the clinic? Many thanks

Mimimayhem18 · 12/03/2023 17:22

Unfortunately I don't know how to message but it's called the skin surgery clinic

If its done on the NHS it maybe not cosmetic accurate as it's an operation to help improve peripheral vision.

So just make sure you're OK with asymmetry and visible scar.

mdh2020 · 12/03/2023 17:24

When I was tested at the hospital the consultant told me to make sure I looked down so the results were exaggerated and he could do the operation. I had the operation on the NHS and there are no visible scars.

Oh wow I would hope for symmetry at least! Yikes!

Interesting! Did you go via GP or optician? There's a fuzz like I said - is that similar? It might just be age for me 😂

Why would there be asymmetry and visible scarring?

just because it’s done for functional rather than cosmetic reasons that doesn’t mean that they give the ophthalmic surgeon the day off and bring in a bloke with a bread knife! 🙄

antwacky · 13/03/2023 08:54

As mentioned above I had mine done on the NHS a month ago. I'm delighted with symmetry and how well the wound has healed, every day I can see the improvement and I'm sure by next month what tiny scar there is atm will be gone completely.

Nine times out of ten it’s the same surgeon!

OneFrenchEgg · 13/03/2023 09:07

I think I will ask the GP first what the local criteria is , and then look at private funding. Very reassuring that asymmetry and scarring won't be an issue!

I'm currently in a hospital in Turkey, having had 360 fdl and breast lift with implants.

They do eyelids for £900

LampsWantLove · 13/03/2023 09:24

@Mimimayhem18 if it helps I have had a mole removed from my face at the Skin Clinic and was very happy with the whole thing. The mole was to the side of my nose but half way up so getting near to my eye socket so I was very worried about removing it. I kept catching it on my glasses. The scar is only visible if I get really hot and my face goes red. Obviously the first few days afterwards I looked like I had had a cigarette put out on my face but it healed beautifully with the aftercare products they gave me. I thought it may help to hear that.

I am going back shortly to ask for upper eyelid surgery as my lids are resting on my eyelashes and I just look tired all the time.

@OneFrenchEgg DHs eyes were similar and the surgeon offered it on the nhs when he had cataract surgery. Never occurred to him. I've seen private for £2000 by a good surgeon my beautician recommended but they're not too bad

Wow. If I didn't need pretreatment I would definitely look at going abroad.

Really? I'm going to ask the GP, just have to pluck up courage and not be treated as cheeky.

What pretreatment do you need?

Once I'm healed I'm coming back for bra lift, thighs and eye lids
