Bikini shaving rash - HELP

Daydreambeliever1 · 07/03/2023 21:20

i Have awful shaving rash in my bikini area. I have tried using conditioner, fresh blades, exfoliating scrubs and yet the rash always continues. I have quite coarse hair that grows pretty rapid meaning I shave the area every 2-3 days. I have just started to exfoliate before shaving, using body oil before shaving and then applying conditioner and shaving. I have then moisturiser after. Am I doing something wrong? Also I have only been exfoliating this week so only 2 times and moisturising. But still have lots of red dots and black where the hair seems to be underneath. Do I need to moisturise on the days I haven’t shaved? Is there anything else I can do. I live in a hot country and in the summer it’s a complete nightmare and makes me very self conscious.

Rather than shave bald, I trim very close with a trimmer. No nicks or rash, and it feels soft, not stubbly.

In the summer I may wax the outer bikini line if I'm swimming and can be bothered.

Might this be an option? Completely hairless may be your preference, but it's not worth it if it leaves you feeling uncomfortable and spotty.

Daydreambeliever1 · 07/03/2023 21:37

@PearlClutzsche i might try the trimming option. I’ve actually never had this area waxed but I’m worried within a few days it would be regrowing again? I’ve considered laser to be honest but it’s quite expensive and I’m worried to spend that kind of money if it doesn’t work. Also I read you can’t be in the sun once it’s been done so it isn’t something I’d be able to do this close to summer now. I’m just really fed up, I know it’s worse because I keep shaving but my hair growth is so rapid and dark that I can’t help but keep doing it but maybe I’ll try a trimmer. Thank you!

I always found sudocrem works wonders for shaving rash!

WishingMyLifeAway · 07/03/2023 21:59

I can't shave or use depilatory creams at all. I just get an awful rash with either. Doesn't matter what I do.

I have had the area waxed and sugared with success though. Sugaring is gentler on the skin. And as long as I exfoliate have virtually no issues.

More recently I've bought an epilator and that's the best yet. Again you have to exfoliate but no issues with rashes.

If you go for an epilator don't scrimp. The more expensive ones tend to be more effective at gripping and pulling the hair out quickly and so less painful. I had a cheaper one years ago and gave up as it was excruciating. I splashed this time and it's almost pain free except for a few sensitive bits. I started in sections at first to get used it.

Get a Philips Lumea, I used to get terrible shaving rashes from thick hair on my bikini line, and now the hair hardly grows there at all. I only used it a few times too.

GoldilockMom · 07/03/2023 22:00

I was going to suggest baby bum cream!

I would recommend the home lasers, about £200 - you do it ever couple of weeks and see a high reduction in growth. With in a few weeks. The darker the hair the better the results. However it also depends on your skin tone - there’s a chart somewhere I’ll see if I can find it.

GoldilockMom · 07/03/2023 22:05

Should be ok if you haven’t got really dark skin tone

Same, from the first time I had no rash which was amazing and the regrowth was reduced very quickly. I use every few weeks now - live in Aus so I just make sure to use 50spf sunscreen, which I do everyday anyway.

before that I used an epilator, also no rash from that, and easier than going for a wax because my hair grows back quickly

I have also heard using a dove deodorant works. No idea but certainly won’t hurt if you try it

GrumpyPanda · 07/03/2023 22:06

Maybe just leave the area alone for a while to give your skin time to recover?

In the meantime, shower oil can help minor irritations if it's also dry skin-related.

Daydreambeliever1 · 07/03/2023 22:37

All so helpful! Thank you sooo much! I’m looking in to Philips Lumea now!

I’ve done it twice and yes I do need to do it again - but see the difference already. (It’s my leg!)

Why don’t you do laser?

Ndd135632 · 07/03/2023 22:44

Ah just seen messages. Yes get the best quality Philips Lumea. It works.

catfunk · 07/03/2023 22:44

Phillips Lumea has changed my life (and bikini line)
Really gutted I struggled with it for 20 years before getting one.

Ndd135632 · 07/03/2023 22:46

@catfunk agree. It’s a game changer OP. And you can do your armpits, legs (and the odd face mole) too!

Ndd135632 · 07/03/2023 22:47

Pay for the best one. Just do it.

Yep sudocream amazing!

PatsyJStone · 07/03/2023 22:56

Either epilady or IPL, I use a Braun one for both. Waxing or using an epilady won't grow back in days, more like weeks and hair will start to weaken and you won't have as much regrowth a few years down the line.
If using an epilady just be careful when you first start on your bikini area. It will transform your legs as well!

Rayna37 · 07/03/2023 23:00

Electric shaver only in this area, far too sensitive for wet shave.

CrotchetyQuaver · 07/03/2023 23:10

I use a bikini trimmer I bought in boots on mine, slap on some (any) moisturiser and it's good. Not sore, itchy or painful. Shaving and waxing were no good for me, always got a rash, soreness and ingrowing hairs, it was far too high maintenance.

Daydreambeliever1 · 07/03/2023 23:24

@GoldilockMom i would love to be down to this little amount of re growth! Thanks for sharing the pics.

i really didn’t expect so much help and advise. It’s really appreciated. I think I’ll give the Philips machine a go! I just get worried these things won’t work on my stubborn hair! But I have to try something as this shaving is really not working whatever I do! Also sorry does everyone who’s sensitive here moisturise everyday or just days they’ve shaved?

Face moles??

schmalex · 08/03/2023 12:40

I had mine lasered - 5 or so sessions and there's barely anything left and no rashes ever!

EvelynBeatrice · 08/03/2023 13:26

Please do a patch test a week or two apart with the lumea. Some people get foliculitis which can be very nasty.
