Sore hands help please

pastypirate · 04/03/2023 16:18

I now seem to react to every hand wash product out there. My hands are dry and sore. I've found that palmers cocoa butter hand cream helps a lot but as soon as I need to wash my hands again the benefits are gone.
Neutrogena is shit I've tried that.
Products with alcohol are worse but even ecover and dove is affecting my skin now. Between fingers is the worst.

Any ideas please?

Perhaps the Dermol range? It includes handwash and creams and is soap-free, very gentle and effective. It may be prescription only, not sure. Also Diprobase cream used to be wonderful, though I think I heard that it may have been discontinued or maybe now goes by another name.
Have you tried asking in a pharmacy in case they can recommend something? They'd be sure to be up to speed with what's available.
Good luck.

Although it seems counterintuitive, when I have sore hand I have found that exfoliating them helps loads. I exfoliate with a face wash, and then use hand cream (aveeno usually) and then put on those white cotton gloves over night. The exfoliation means that the moisturiser gets to the skin that needs it most, rather than the dead flaking top skin.

I get this. Working Hands in the round green pot is quite good.

surreyisik · 04/03/2023 18:02

I love La Roche Posay cicaplast mains. My hands are always dry and sore around the knuckles sometime with blisters and cracks and it seems to do the job

mamaison · 04/03/2023 18:02

I use plain Shea butter. It acts as a barrier and also repairs. For soap I use Avalon Organics as its main ingredient is aloe juice.

Is it worth checking with the GP in case it's eczema or dermatitis or something?

Dox9 · 04/03/2023 18:06

La Roche Posay cicaplast as pp said. My dd hands were shredded with all the sanitizer use and it worked really well. We used the hand-wash and the balm.

I found that I was allergic to something in liquid soaps, I switched to bar soap a few years ago and the difference was really apparent and showed really quickly.

OrangeBlossom28 · 04/03/2023 18:16

Zerodouble Gel is brilliant.

Hebehouse · 04/03/2023 18:19

I had this trouble till i switched to Dove bar soap. I can't cope at all with harsh soaps/ handwash. Rubber gloves for washing up too, always!

FizzyStream · 04/03/2023 18:25

I worked in dermatology for a while. As pp have said, use a cream/emollient such as Dermol 500 for washing hands and applying afterwards. Stay away from detergents or wear gloves when using. Make sure hands are properly dry after washing. Wear cotton gloves over night after thoroughly moisturising ideally with a thick emollient. May be worth seeing if your GP can refer you to dermatology but in the meantime they can prescribe Dermol for use as above.

FizzyStream · 04/03/2023 18:27

Also for between fingers you can buy hydrocortisone 1% over the counter. It sounds to me like contact dermatitis but obvs can't diagnose over the web!

Cheesywiggles · 04/03/2023 18:27

I really sympathise op I'm exactly the same. My hands have been particularly awful the last 2 months. The pharmacist told me I have eczema and sold me Aveeno. It seems to work really well but I have to use it often otherwise the dryness comes back. Switching to bar soap may be a good idea also like others have said. Think I'm going to try doing that to. But definitely try Aveeno , it's really soothing and not greasy like some of the other creams around.

DrNo007 · 04/03/2023 18:28

Weleda skin food.

Robinonaspade · 04/03/2023 18:38

My hands react in the same way if I use liquid soap, so bar soap helps.

O'keiffes hand balm is good for when I'm out and about, and I slather my hands in vaseline and pop on cotton gloves on a night when they are sore. This helps a lot.

pastypirate · 05/03/2023 01:12

Hi all thank you so much. I think k as pp said it's all liquid hand wash. I will try and stick to the dive bars we already have and see.
I wear rubber gloves religiously for all cleaning or my hands would bleed I think. Bathroom spray is like acid on them!

Hand cream helps a lot but as soon as I wash my hands I'm back to square one.

Dd2 is the same and I have banned hand sanitiser from our lives we just can't cope with it!

Liquid hand soap is the absolute worst thin for hands.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/03/2023 06:00

Defo tray bar soap instead. Lots of liquid soap has sls which irritate.

Maybe go to boots and look in the excema section. You can buy small pots of cetraben and zero base etc which you could try and see if any help.
I also like body shop hemp cream as after I wash my hands it doesn't feel like its all washed off.

Sunshineandrainbow · 05/03/2023 06:01

On bad cracked bits of hands I put sudo cream which helps.

fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 06:09

I am having good results with the following:
Sanex BiomeProtect Sensitive Liquid Hand Wash
Okeefes working hands applied after every wash
At night I use E45 Itch Relief cream from the pharmacy. It has urea in which I think is the main thing that helps. My hands aren't itchy any more just sore so I might ask for something similar next time.

The body shop hemp is bad on my hands so try a bit first if you go for this one OP. My hands felt hydrated but so sore after using it

fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 06:11

Also be really strict on wearing gloves outdoors

TuneInThisTimeNextWeek · 05/03/2023 06:19

Any intense non-perfumed hand cream that contains glycerin. When I worked at a factory handling chemicals years ago, my hands were a mess - hand cream and cotton gloves on before bed helped massively.

bumblebeessarecool · 05/03/2023 06:21

I use something called gloves in a bottle. It doesnt immediately wash off and doesnt feel greasy

Rina66 · 05/03/2023 06:46

I suffer with sore skin on my hands, due to cleaning products, especially Flash. Proper Vaseline is the only thing that really helps, I rub it into my hands before bed. I use Dove bar soap too as the liquid soaps are too harsh.
