I've been using the same leather wallet for 28 years- can anyone beat that?

I was given a gift of a wallet 28 years ago & I've used it continuously since the day I got it.

I lost it once and a tourist found it, brought it home with them & posted it back to me very unexpectedly! I was sure it was a goner that time. I'd already had it a few years by that stage.

It arrived in my post box one day with lovely note & all the contents intact.

I've been given other wallets over the years but just never took to them

I'd quite like to upgrade it now (it's fairly battered) but I feel weirdly disloyal to it & it's long years of service!

Does anyone else have an everyday item in daily use this long?

Not quite as long as some of these but I had an M&S dressing gown from the age of 17 until I was about 35. It saw me through being a student, moving in with DF, now DH, the births of the DC, multiple house moves… Felt bad getting rid when it started to fall apart quite literally.

MIL has a fully working working hairdryer she got as a student. She’s now in her 70s. That thing really should be in a museum.

I bought a green sweatshirt when I was 18. I've been wearing it for the last 34years for my diy. It's covered in paint blobs etc and has been mended here and there but it's virtually bomb-proof so I keep it. My diy trousers are another story because I regularly go through the arse of those and then have to get a new pair..😂

I’ve had the same keyring since 1992.

My husband has some board shorts of a similar age that we have to take on holiday each year. Nothing wrong with them, apparently. He never wears them but they come with us anyway.

I got a really old clothes horse off a great aunt. She had it for many many years and I've been using it for 10! Still going strong.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/03/2023 00:10

I have towels that pre date DH, and we've been married for 30 years.

Salonselectives · 07/03/2023 00:15

A Chelsea Girl t-shirt that my mum bought about 45+years ago, it's mine now.

Charliecatpaws · 07/03/2023 00:24

My dad wore the same belt from the mid 60's until he passed away in 2021, I miss him

Actually I think I've got some towels I took from my parents house after they died which my mum bought in around 1990, M&S and I still use them!

MosquitoBuffet · 07/03/2023 01:22

I still use a clock radio I bought in 1993

Brokendaughter · 07/03/2023 01:30

My dad bought me a filofax for my birthday in the 80s.
I still use it & bought a refill just last week.

Father Christmas gave me a little house shaped sewing box in the early 70s.
I still use it as the chimney is a pin cushion.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 07/03/2023 01:54

I received a Swiss army knife in 1985; it lives in the kitchen drawer and I still use it at least a couple of times per month.

I have a watch that I received for my graduation, and I'm 60. Don't wear it daily, though. Same with pearls received for my 21st birthday.

My bed (headboard, footboard) and matching chest of drawers are about 100 years old. I got them from a relative when I was 14; I'm nearly 60. Use daily.

My living room settee and club chair were my grandparents'. Purchased in the early 1950s. I had them recoverd last year at great expense;the upholsterer was quite impressed. If those pieces of furniture could talk! So many family gatherings took place around them.

Nimbostratus100 · 07/03/2023 03:04

just a quick glance around the room I am currently sitting in

the winner is probably coffee cup next to ( more than 50 years)

But there is also dressing gown 30 years

calculator on my desk must be 40 years, since it was bought for my O level exams - still used daily, never needed a new battery

In terms of everyday items, as opposed to heirlooms, ( got at least 3 things in the room over 100 years) those 3 are the winners

I’m wearing a nightie I bought in 1996.

I remember Chelsea Girl! I had a top from there but it's long gone.

My DF was only saying yesterday how my late DM used to keep and wear clothes that were 30 years + old. I'm the same. I have a nightie still in one piece from when I was 10 that I keep hold of as it reminds me of my childhood. I'm 51! I don't wear it though.

In comparison I had a nightie from Mothercare when I had DS and it fell completely apart 2 years later. No wonder they went under!

My father used his father's wallet which was passed to him on his 21st birthday and originally bought in 1948 - the year he was born. Sadly died in 2018 but the wallet was still in his pocket albeit a little worn. My brother has it now though rarely uses it

I've got my nans handbag bought in 1950s and and I love it but it only ever gets used for funerals and very formal occasions now.

My family are a bit into reusing things Grin

Dintananadinta · 07/03/2023 03:26

Show us the wallet!

listsandbudgets · 07/03/2023 03:27

That's about the same age as some of my MIL's Emory ice cream tubs she used for Tupperware. She's amazing and probably has the lowest carbon foot print of anyone not living off grid. Grin

Ineedwinenow · 07/03/2023 11:53

I have actually thought of another one but it isn’t clothing! My husband uses a little wooden calendar on his desk daily with the day/date/month, that his great grandmother owned and we she was born in the 1800s and it’s been used daily for 4 generations up to now!

StephenDedalus · 07/03/2023 12:23

I love hearing about all of these older things still in use!
My wallet is not the oldest thing we have in use in the house, not by a long shot. I was just putting it back in my bag that morning when I posted and was bemused by the fact that I have beautiful bags and yet was using this beaten up old wallet daily..I've become very attached to it but it certainly wouldn't win any beauty prizes!

We have loads of old furniture and items in our house belonging from grandparents and great grandparents.

I adore things that have a history.

Levis denim jacket bought for my 16th birthday which has been worn very consistently over the last 40 years especially with the trend of wearing denim jackets over dresses.
Windsmoor wool coat that is nearly 30 years old and has been worn endlessly.
Dorothy Perkins trench coat that is about 27 years old and has just been replaced this week by a Jaeger one as I thought I could justify the spend!
My leather briefcase is over 30 years old and looks better with age (wish I could say the same about me!)

I still wear the same leather belt I bought 25 years ago from top shop. I wear jeans most days so the belt is used lots. Its all stretched and the colour has flaked off but I cant find a replacement I like.

I also have a pair of 70s style tan leather wedge sandals I bought around the same time. Havent worn them as much, just every fri and sat night for over 15 years, and certainly not in the last 5 or so years as my ankles cant take heels anymore but I refuse to part with them.

mogtheexcellent · 07/03/2023 15:09

Forgot to say the wedge heels are Dotty P
