Hair goes greasy in less than 24hours

Looking for an inexpensive way to help my constantly greasy hair!!

I have combination skin, dry in some patches and oily in others, so I know there is only so much I can do to help my scalp.

If I wash my hair of a morning, the following morning it looks like it desperately needs washing. Oily at the roots but also dry frizzy ends.

At the moment I’m using a basic Pantene pro-v shampoo (shampooing twice) and a dove conditioner (only at the ends). Occasionally using one of the garnier hair masks. I generally get whatever shampoo and conditioners are on offer in boots

I use a tresemme heat protectant and blow dry with a Dyson.

Any suggestions without it costing me a fortune? I’m guessing I should be starting off with a clarifying shampoo for any product buildup

Alternate washing with just water, or tea/vinegar. Give your scalp a good scrub with your fingers.

Have you tried using cornflour and cocoa as a dry shampoo?

Try those instead of a couple of washes.

Also brushing with a natural bristle shampoo to distribute the sebum to the dry ends.

Dilute the shampoo when you use it- I only use a fraction of what I used to, rather than a full foamy scalp.

I have this exact problem and the only thing that has proven to work consistently is Faith In Nature Lemon and Tea Tree and even then I still can't leave it 3 days.

I suspect the issue is that I sweat heavily from the scalp and there's nothing for that

bunhead1979 · 26/02/2023 17:32

Same here. Have tried everything. This is what works best for me.

shampoo twice
no conditioner in the shower
leave in conditioner (ends only)
heat protection spray
blow dry
hair spray
bit of texturising powder immediately after drying.

that night before bed a liberal amount of powder (not spray) dry shampoo- kite nest is the best. Make sure you do all the roots, around your ears and at the back as well.

This way i can get a respectable “work suitable” or “night out” level of second day hair.

people who say leave it and it will sort itself do not have hair like us.

Tiredandawake · 26/02/2023 18:53

I started using NOPE shampoo and conditioner bars (the argon oil ones). I've found they clean my hair really well and I can last longer between washes, about once every 3-4 days depending on what I'm doing rather than every 2 days

The shampoo lathers up really well. The conditioner bar is a bit more tricky to use but my hair feels just as nice as it did with conventional conditioner, if not smoother.

thirteenfiftyeight · 26/02/2023 18:53

@AnonymousAli I like Three More Inches (good Facebook group too) and I like the Shea moisture range (the ones for fine, straight hair even if your hair is slightly wavy.) There are loads of silicone free shampoos on the market now by other brands too.

Fullrecoveryispossible · 26/02/2023 19:16

The only thing that stopped this was going on the pill (Yasmine specifically). Also gave me clear skin!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 26/02/2023 19:34

Vosene.

User963 · 26/02/2023 19:37

Shampoo bars. The Alberto bsalm apple one works well for me. Can go three days now whereas it always used to look greasy after one day.

Itcouldhappenabishop · 26/02/2023 19:41

Pantene is dreadful on my hair. It gets greasy in hours and my scalp itches like mad.
Give some non SLS brands a go, I like OGX

BeckettandCastle · 26/02/2023 19:44

I have fine hair, which gets greasy quickly. I have to wash it every morning (tried not washing it over lockdown & it made zero difference).

I use herbal essences clear shampoo & conditioner as they are silicone free etc & better for your hair.

All I can suggest is to wash it every morning as that's the only way I can keep mine clean and not greasy.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 26/02/2023 19:57

Pantene makes my hair greasy. I use cheap ones, bottom shelf, Alberto Balsam, that sort. Works much better

cigarettesNalcohol · 26/02/2023 20:14

So you don't wash your hair everyday, in addition you can:

-make sure the heat protectant isn't accidentally being applied on the roots.

-straight after drying hair, get ahead and dry shampoo your roots, this will massively help absorb the oil as it starts to appear.

-make sure you are washing your pillow cases twice a week as this can massively make a difference.

-before you climb into bed, apply some dry shampoo, again it will help absorb any oil over night.

-make sure you aren't buying shampoo with silicones in them.

-rotate which shampoos you used. I'm currently using Garnier delicate oats which works well for my oily hair. After a while I notice it doesn't work as well to stop the oil so I swap. I use Herbal Essences Daily Detox. They also do a 'Clean' one.

-don't brush it or touch it too much/throughout the day. Running your fingers through your hair throughout the day will definitely make it worse.

-you can try wearing your hair tied back straight after washing and drying instead of a blow dry whilst you try to improve the situation.

I used to have greasy hair the day after I washed it... I can manage 4 days now. Day 4 is oily but just at the roots, I tie it back on that day and it's absolutely fine. I have fine, straight hair.

Pantene is particular bad.

Loved Yasmin! Spent 10 years on it, had
to stop 4 years ago due to issues with blood pressure 😪

I have to wash my hair every other day. If it’s the weekend and I wash my hair the Friday, I’ll tie my hair up until Monday when it gets a wash.

Thanks for that.
very conscious to not let any products go near my roots.
I do use dry shampoo on the second day if going to work but try to limit using it as I’m scared it will break all my hair 😂
going to go to superdrug tomorrow and read some labels and find some cheap-ish things to try. My worry is finding something to keep my scalp less oily but the rest of my (colour damaged) hair happy and not frizzy/flyaway!

I’m also a daily hair washer. If you have a fairly greasy scalp no amount of “hair training” changes that. It’s a myth.

I agree with the tip to use a small amount of dry shampoo immediately after washing and drying. Don’t wait until it’s oily. Section hair and apply lightly to scalp. It won’t damage your hair.

Also second the vote for Vosene anti dandruff shampoo (any supermarket) it’s the best and cheapest shampoo for clarifying hair.

Don’t wash your hair daily. I wash my hair every 5 days and have no greasy hair whatsoever.
Also my hairdresser confirmed this..
The more you wash it, the more it gets greasy.

BINGOOOOOOOOO!

As if washing or not washing hair can change your hormones 🤣

Feefee00 · 26/02/2023 20:44

Stop daily washing use dry shampoo then wash every other day. I can go 3 days now !

Patchouli6 · 26/02/2023 20:54

I have to wash my hair every day too. I’ve tried leaving it but it just gets greasier to be honest. I use a tangle teezer scalp massager when I shampoo which really helps. It’s a brush that exfoliates your scalp. It could be that you’re not getting all the shampoo out properly and this helps? I really struggle
to apply any styling products too as they seem to weigh down my hair and make it more greasy. You might be better going easy on the heat protector.

Itdjgsurchg · 26/02/2023 20:59

Same problem. Like others on here spent lockdown with disgusting, greasy hair trying to ‘train’ it to not need washing as much but it didn’t make any difference.

I wash mine every other day but on the second day it is greasy and not very nice. I just scrape it back. If I am working from
home I may leave it 3 days but it looks and feels disgusting.

My hairdresser said to try a citrus shampoo so I currently have a lemon and tea tree natural one I got from Holland and Barrett. For the first few times I thought I noticed a difference but I am sure my hair just adapts? I double wash but seeing above comments I might not be doing the right thing.

I thought I would grow out of it but I am well into my 30s now. It sounds like some of us just have greasy hair. The worst thing is I have really dry, tangly bits so I have the worst of both worlds.

princesssparklepants · 26/02/2023 21:09

I was just looking for tips for this too!

I have tried to not wash it everyday, been doing it for months.... makes zero difference.
By day 3 my hair can literally be slicked back and looks wet!
I washed my hair around lunch time yesterday and feels like it needs it again.
Dry shampoo does nothing!!!

This nonsense drives me mad. Why do people refuse that some people just have greasy hair??

Snippit · 26/02/2023 21:34

Check your shampoo for silicone, it’s usually called dimethicone. It can build up over time and weigh your hair down. Try something like Herbal Essence 0% silicone shampoo, it’s clarifying and will strip the excess build up. Most hairdressers hate Pantene to be honest because of the build up.

I had a similar problem some years ago and found the clarifying shampoo worked wonders. It can be a nightmare trying to find a suitable hair regime, but try this, I’m sure it will help.
