Can you lot help a fat frumpy woman?

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 18:22

Please?

I am 43. I’m very overweight <sigh> after successfully losing lots of weight after my first pregnancy it’s gone on again in my second. I am about five stone overweight.

I am also pregnant, so maternity clothes should be my go to, but I cannot find decent plus sized maternity clothes. Grateful for any suggestions. I feel horrid at the moment and obviously horizontal stripes are a no no for larger ladies. Please help!

As my mother always said get your hair and skin looking good and you are halfway there.

CheeseMeltCracker · 18/02/2023 18:25

Will be watching to see replies - I’m mid thirties and 15st and not tall!

Are you pear shaped? More of an apple?

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 18:25

I don’t think my skin is too bad or my hair … but clothes are a huge issue. I’m not going to look like Molly Mae at my age and size but I do need to look professional at work and I would also like to be comfortable!

I’m a lump, @CheeseMeltCracker . I have a huge stomach even when not pregnant. I’ve always had a weird B shaped stomach even when slim, and so I never really look properly pregnant, just very, very large. My arse and legs are fat and so is my back! I also have no neck.

Really selling myself, aren’t I? 😂

What’s your usual/historic style? What sorts of shops, what sort of budget?

BeeBB · 18/02/2023 18:34

What height, age and dress size are you? What sort of colouring do you have/colours do you suit and what sort of clothes are you after, are there any particular brands or looks that you like?

I am tall, 50’s, very plus sized with a big tummy. I find I look better if I wear a nice bright colour I suit near my face and fun jewellery. I wished I had a brightly coloured capsule wardrobe that I could mix and match easily.

unclebuck · 18/02/2023 18:35

Please stop calling yourself frumpy. It's fucking hard being a 43 year old woman, let alone a pregnant with a little one. I would focus entirely on your hair. My clothes are quite shit and but I have a great skin care routine and spend quite a lot on my colour (hence no money left for clothes) and it makes a big difference.

Roundlampshade · 18/02/2023 18:36

If you were a letter of the alphabet, what would you be? I am a P - all tits and stomach, no bum and skinny legs.

unclebuck · 18/02/2023 18:36

PS the entire fucking fashion industry pretends we don't exist - you are not frumpy - they are and we lack choice!!! I ordered a large bikini from net a fucking porter last year - LARGE - it was a 10 max. Fuckers.

Can we be a cartoon instead? I was Barbapapa but the body hair situ is a little out of control now so more Barbabeau

Roundlampshade · 18/02/2023 18:40

You can be anything you like @unclebuck .

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 18:42

I do need some clothes though - can’t walk around naked!

One of the problems is I’m not sure what my dress size is. Before I got pregnant I was a 14/16. Now probably more like a 20. I used to like Fat Face, White Stuff, some Joules, Next … these stores don’t have maternity sections but the shops that do seem quite young and trendy which definitely isn’t me either.

tinselvestsparklepants · 18/02/2023 18:45

Can you look on Vinted, buy in big sizes and try some things out? Monki does some lovely big dresses - I bought one to take in but ended up giving it to a friend who is bigger than me, she looked so awesome in it. I'll try and find a link to the sort of thing it was.....

FancyFran · 18/02/2023 18:46

I need height and size to advise. I work in the beauty industry and have a huge wardrobe. I am known for my clothes. I spend a lot as I am a CEO. However I also enjoy bargain hunting and shop on fleebay a lot. I never feel underdressed. I did get my maternity clothes made but good trousers and silk shirts work with a maternity jacket. What is your budget op? And I am plus sized.

tinselvestsparklepants · 18/02/2023 18:51

www.monki.com/en_gbp/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.3/4-sleeve-shirt-dress-white.0964450008.html

It was this sort of thing. They do big sizes and I think the dresses are far more "hooray!" Than some of the Fat face / Joules ones which can be a bit "sorry about me existing." Huge congrats on your pregnancy and I hope you find a lovely dress or three.

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 19:11

Thanks. I’m 5’3 so not tall. I don’t tend to wear dresses a lot but could be persuaded.

OP posts:
Timeturnerplease · 18/02/2023 19:23

I’m 36, 5’1” and currently alarmingly big. Size 16 on the bottom and 20 on the top. I have massive muscular rugby player legs thanks to spending my formative years riding horses, a big floppy belly from two pregnancies and chunky shoulders. I’ve put on tons of weight in the last 18 months thanks to my youngest’s lack of sleep/me eating cake to survive.

I tend to live in leggings and carefully shaped longer length tops. I don’t look great but I am presentable. Simply Be is good for nice, modern clothing but cut for plus size people. I think they have a maternity section too….?

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 19:26

Thanks @Timeturnerplease , that’s really helpful. I’ll have a look. My ideal would be a couple of pairs of trousers / leggings, a few nice tops and a cardigan or two.

ASOS have loads of maternity clothes in various colours and lengths www.asos.com/women/maternity/cat/?cid=5813&currentpricerange=5-160&refine=size:162

Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 19:34

Thanks - they are definitely for someone much younger and prettier than me! I bet Molly Mae rocked them: me, not so much!

OP posts:
Zebracat · 18/02/2023 19:47

You will never be this young again. I would also recommend ASOS, they have a lot of Mollie Mae scraps but they also have basics, and lots of stuff in their outlet. I like this dress and it’s £25.00. And I’m willing to bet you are lovely.

Can you lot help a fat frumpy woman?
Fatandpregnantagain · 18/02/2023 19:50

I think I’m a bit too short for long dresses - they just swamp me! Must lose weight after this pregnancy, but I really am uncomfortable in ‘normal’ clothes now and look very scruffy.

OP posts:
Xrays · 18/02/2023 19:52

Don’t give up on Asos! I’m 42 and mainly shop there. You have to just be ruthless and keep trawling through the site. The curves / plus size bit has some really lovely things - I am 5ft 7 and a size 18/20 and I tend to size up a bit on Asos as I don’t like things clingy.

Yours is also good for basics / longer length things. They do a maternity range now I think.

rainbpwcupboards · 18/02/2023 21:10

@FancyFran - where do you tend to ship? I'd be interested in your recommendations for nice plus size stuff

Alvinne · 19/02/2023 02:25

I'd second 'Yours' the quality can be a bit hit and miss but the leggings and trousers I've found to be pretty good www.yoursclothing.co.uk/maternity?gclid=Cj0KCQiAi8KfBhCuARIsADp-A56Zb3ShUf1R_yQVLnwXeid8Vf6NYrNsMX_XedLS0ZbJi7f6mpmgJDMaAlquEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Vero Moda have some nice stuff www.veromoda.com/en-gb/curve-plus-size/maternity-wear

As do Tu at Sainsburys, filter by size and there's lots in plus sizes tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/c/women/maternity?size-20_98=on&q=%3AnewArrivals%3Asize%3A20_98%3A&q=&page=0#

Don't be too harsh on yourself, you've got a lot going on xx
