You can't wear makeup - what makes you feel 'done'?

Waiting for dermatology referral for very red rashes on my face which arent easily covered with makeup, and seem to be worsened by it. I'm also about to have a baby and would love to not feel 100% ugly as well as exhausted, stressed and emotional!

So far I've had my hair cut how it suits me and bought a couple of 100% cotton dresses and a few headbands. Any other tips for how to feel put together when my face is falling apart?

Glasses might be worth consideration.

BevMarsh · 17/02/2023 20:12

Perfume
Scarf?
Classic stud earrings

Comedycook · 17/02/2023 20:15

Sunglasses...when I do the school run and have no make up on, I always put on a pair of sunglasses. Mine are prescription so I wear them whatever the weather and even if I'm indoors in shops!

Jewellery

JaninaDuszejko · 17/02/2023 20:17

I never wear makeup. Wearing a favourite perfume and nicejewellery makes me feel 'one'.

DoubleGauze · 17/02/2023 20:18

Good hair and painted nails usually. Sunglasses are a great idea too. I hate wearing make up anyway as it feel wrong on me so I may be the wrong person to respond.

I don't wear makeup. I'm not sure I ever look "done" or "put together" (which I usually assume means smart or posh) but I have quite a distinctive slightly offbeat look that I think looks nice alongside no makeup. I have a very short hairstyle and big glasses and lots of brightly coloured clothes and earrings. It's not a polished look but it's definitely a look and I don't usually feel meh about myself.

Sunglasses and nail varnish. Brightly colored scarf with a plain well cut coat

NoDairyNoProblem · 17/02/2023 20:21

Nice body moisturiser
Nails painted
Tinted lip balm
Sunglasses all the way!

Glasses might be worth consideration.

Yes, glasses! A good frame flatters my face and means I don't need to wear eye make up.

declutteringmymind · 17/02/2023 20:22

Shape brows and curling lashes might help

Can you wear lip gloss?

AchillesHeelys · 17/02/2023 20:23

Can you do brows and lashes, and just not foundation? Or do you need to avoid all makeup. Just those two things, with nicely cut and coloured hair, make me feel ‘put together’

nanodyne · 17/02/2023 20:23

Jewellery and a manicure for me!

iCouldSleepForAYear · 17/02/2023 20:33

Shiny hair (freshly washed curly or straightened) makes me look more polished.

Glasses with dark-ish frames. Tortoiseshell or red. Draws attention away from my dark circles.

My eyes are too sensitive and prone to hay fever for lash extensions, but I have some relatives who swear by them. I use mascara for sensitive eyes on my lashes and brows.

Keeping my brows groomed helps, even just tweezing strays away from the natural arch once I notice them.

Lip balm. Even plain Vaseline can highlight your natural lip colour and keep lips in good condition. If you get a neutral, unscented one that should keep potential irritants low.

Earrings. Sometimes a necklace or a scarf.

A watch.

Ironed clothes.

ladygindiva · 17/02/2023 21:33

Nice earrings! I don't wear a lot of makeup and my hair is unpredictable but I never leave the house without a nice pair of earrings on, it just makes me feel " done" , as you say.

Fake tan. I have horrible skin. The fake tan by Lancaster is gentle and helps hide the redness. It’s not orange but a blue base so balances the red.

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/02/2023 01:19

I hate that this is the case but I think for me the honest answer is nothing. I have blemish prone skin so don't (try as I might) ever feel that good about myself or put together if I've not at least put some concealer on when it's in a bad way. I'm very pale and so red toned spots are very obvious.

In the spirit of the question though , when I've needed to go makeup free curling my hair and wearing it down would be my second choice, sunglasses if possible.

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2023 01:23

Always like my nails painted! I hate seeing my nails bare, it just looks weird to me now.
just seems to cheer me up for some reason having them painted. I do them myself though; don’t go anywhere, it’s quick and the seche vite quick dry top coat means I can change them in a very speedy turnaround time so they can be easily replaced when chipped.

handsoffate · 18/02/2023 01:24

The only makeup I can reliably wear without my skin reacting is lipstick. So for me it’s lipstick, jewellery, perfume and an interesting bag.

handsoffate · 18/02/2023 01:28

Oh, and a good haircut

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/02/2023 01:47

Eyebrows shaped.

Lipbalm rather than anything with pigment.

Using emollient ointment to cleanse.

Good sunglasses and hair.

Earrings.

Nice necklace/chain.

Neutrals with a deeper colour, so taupe or camel with dark blue or green, rather than white, for example.

Nice bag.

Neat nails. Fresh pedicure and polish.

Soft, fine knitwear.

Very comfortable shoes and socks.

Lots of rest.

The only thing you can't do right now is makeup - do the rest and you are likely to feel better.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/02/2023 02:21

Earrings that make me smile and tidy hair with pretty accessories and shoes - anything a bit different.

silentpool · 18/02/2023 02:39

I've had to change my skin care to fragrance free ones (made for sensitive or eczema prone skin), as I was having similar issues.

I wear a zinc based sunscreen (rather than chemical) now and have done alright with those natural mineral make up powders.

One thing that really does help to calm things down is one of those LED skin treatments they offer at dermatologists.

WandaWonder · 18/02/2023 03:29

I don't wear make up so washing my hair, having a shower, putting deodorant on, brushing my teeth and getting dressed really

Hope551 · 18/02/2023 04:12

I have psoriasis and extremely dry skin. I can get away with mascara. But today I've bought to try a tinted hypoallergenic moisturiser. Not exactly foundation, but evens skin out a little and has a glow, with loads of vitamins in it. Once your results come back could you visit a few make up gurus and see if you can find a product that's safe? There are quite a few products out there now for awkward skin. Or even skin routines/facials make me feel better and make my skin look a bit better temporarily:) I know it's not be all and end all, but for me a like to do something occasionally just to boost my confidence and feel 'prettier' x
