Is the good wool coat back?

Last time I mentioned my "good" coat on here I was torn to shreds 😆

Yesterday I travelled through London. All the beautiful young women were wearing wide leg trousers or jeans (sometimes ripped) trainers and a long wool coat. Worn open, which defeats the object of a coat, but we'll overlook that for now.

It did seem to automatically make them more polished. Not something I'd have worn with ripped jeans and trainers back in the day, but if I drag my old Jaeguar (sp?) coat out and throw it on over whatever, will I suddenly become on trend?!

Now the weather has finally turned, we're into the brief spell where a classic wool coat, open, (with an on-trend scarf), is a viable option. Get your Jaeger out and go for it.

IamNannyPlum · 16/02/2023 09:36

I don’t know. I’ve been trying to buy one all winter and can’t find one anywhere that isn’t ££££ or polyester.

beguilingeyes · 16/02/2023 10:14

I bought one a few years ago from Damsel In A Dress in John Lewis. I live in puffas in the winter but I realised that they won't do for formal occasions, eg a funeral.
I don't wear it often but I love my coat.

QuietlyConfident · 16/02/2023 10:17

Looking through John Lewis you can get them for 150 quid or less if you're happy to accept 20% polyester in the blend. But for 100% wool you're normally looking at 200quid up.

Well worth checking out good charity shops though (or Vinted/EBay but it's the sort of thing I'd want to check in person for wear and tear).

EasilyDirected · 16/02/2023 10:25

I think there's still a place for one, having had to go to two funerals this winter and seen many people in smart dark coats (my black puffer was OK but not ideal). Wearing coats open is pretty normal IMO, you get too hot with them done up apart from on the very coldest days.

borntobequiet · 16/02/2023 10:32

I don’t think they ever went away, but the coats you describe probably aren’t all “good wool”.
DD bought a beautifully cut and well fitting coat similar to what you describe in New Look. It cost £50. You have to look very closely and feel it to realise it’s not wool. The sleeve has bobbled a little on the inner side after almost daily wear through this winter, but it’s hardly noticeable.

CarPoor · 16/02/2023 10:53

Whoever laughed at you for your good wool coat was an idiot. Good wool coats (or their zara counterparts) have been worn by young women forever, they definitely did not go out of style. Maybe not teenagers but certain 21+

Get it out and wear it

CMOTDibbler · 16/02/2023 10:56

IMO good wool coats are never out. The exact on trend shape may vary, but they are always stylish.
My best coat is a cobalt blue one by Reiss, bought on ebay for £15 and immaculate. I always feel gorgeous and swishy in it

lindyloo57 · 16/02/2023 10:58

I just brought a navy throw on coat from m&s, but when I read the reviews nearly all said it started bobbling after one or two wearing, so I'm returning it. And yes I didn't check the material it's polyester.

MadeOfSteel · 16/02/2023 11:00

They never went away, did they? I only wish I could afford a good quality one.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 16/02/2023 11:03

I wish I could wear my good wool coat more - it's gothy and warm but not too hot. But I live in the Lakes so it's too wet and I live in my waterproofs.

BarrelOfOtters · 16/02/2023 11:05

I've got a black wool coat for funerals - which has probably had its day now. A dark purple wool coat for days I know it's not going to rain which I wear open as it's a wee bit snug now. And a navy shortish wool Jaegar one for work.

I'm a bit of a scruff but value a good coat as a way of smartening myself up - at least until I take it off...

I don’t know. I’ve been trying to buy one all winter and can’t find one anywhere that isn’t ££££ or polyester.

Get yourself onto Vinted - I got a gorgeous 100% wool Hobbs coat in perfect condition for £110 just before Christmas!

WaggyTailsWetNoses · 16/02/2023 11:37

I think a wool coat finishes off an outfit in a way a parka or quilted coat just can’t. I treated myself to a Hobbs Tilda coat after Christmas. It’s pure wool and deep purple. It wasn’t cheap but it should last for years. I’m no style icon but I get compliments whenever I wear it, especially with a yellow or cobalt cashmere scarf. And it makes me feel like a grown up.

John Lewis and Hobbs have great prices on last season’s stock.

In my dreams I have a Max Mara wool coat. I saw a gorgeous Hobbs coat in TK Maxx last year and stupidly didn't buy it. Hobbs is good at coats.

Niftythrifter · 16/02/2023 12:24

I bought mine for a tenner at the Marie Curie charity shop. Marks and Spencer and includes Alpaca in there two alongside something else.

My short Joseph coat which includes mohair was eight quid from a charity shop. The only man made material is a percentage of the lining which is mainly cotton.

TheDead · 16/02/2023 13:01

I have always had wool coats. I far prefer them and I keep them for literally years. Today I am wearing a 50's style green wool and cashmere coat that I bought in Whistles about 15 years ago!

I actually only bought a COS puffer jacket a few weeks ago for the first time as I have 2 trips to very cold cities in Feb. It's not my natural style at all..

BreakfastOfWaffles · 16/02/2023 13:09

A long wool coat never goes out of fashion. I mostly wear a waterproof Seasalt coat but the wool one comes out for formal occasions when it's not raining.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/02/2023 13:13

I love them and wear whenever I can. Vintage St Michael herringbone tweed and Aquascutum cashmere are the ones I have at the moment.
Was just musing this morning on where I'd go i I wanted something similar new without paying ££££ 🤔

GettingStuffed · 16/02/2023 13:14

My good wool coat is by country casuals ( that dates it) which I bought from a charity shop a few years ago. It's bright red and I wore it open as it's too warm to do up.

I love it not just because of the colour but it has a chain to hang it up from and littl buttons on the inside of the outer buttons.

NatashaDancing · 16/02/2023 13:14

Did it ever go away? I've always had a good wool winter coat. I had a duffel coat in my teens and a good wool coat ever since.

At the moment I have a 1960s knee length cashmere coat, a 1980s Laura Ashley riding coat, a similar long black riding coat from Lilith from the 2010s, a long red cocoon coat from Lilith from the 2000's , a 1960s style coat from Hobbs from the 2010s and a couple of Max Mara classic icons.

MaeMair · 16/02/2023 13:24

Charity shops in areas with lots of older wealthy people are full of high quality good wool coats, barely worn, bobble free. My favourites are a wool cashmere mix one of a Korean brand costing 15 quid and a current season m and s one bought new with tags, for a tenner. Charity shop prices mean you can have a few!

CaptainWentworth · 16/02/2023 13:38

I’m chuffed by your OP as today I am wearing wide leg jeans and my long wool coat, having not worn it most of the winter in favour of my long puffer!

I love mine, it’s a navy Max Mara Weekend wrap one which I splurged on in the sale the year before my eldest DD was born (which tbh explains its lack of wear - 2 maternity leaves since then and it’s not the most practical for carrying a child wearing muddy shoes!) I hope it’ll never be out of fashion, even if said eldest DD told me it looked like a dressing gown this morning!

Lentilweaver · 16/02/2023 14:05

I like wool coats on other people but find them impractical for me because I cba to carry a brolly plus I get them too dirty on the Tube or in the park. That said, I have a couple of pure wool ones from charity shops ( Jaeger and Monsoon) which I get out for going to the theatre or dinner.

What's with everyone wearing coats open all the time though? Including models online.
