Grey jumper - should I buy something cheap or go for quality?

I feel the cold so pretty much live in jumpers in winter. I have a few but have realised I always come back to the plain ones that go with everything. I want to buy a grey jumper to replace a really old one.

have been looking at the following items completely different price brackets:

nobody’s child - I can wear at hime and Chuck in the washing machine:
www.nobodyschild.com/grey-long-line-roll-neck-jumper.html?utm_source=NMPi&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PaidSearch&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0tyQr8uQ_QIVi-7tCh3IywADEAQYBSABEgLxCvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

wool lovers: no idea what the quality is like:
www.woolovers.com/womens/jumpers/womens-lambswool-polo-jumper-grey-11806

navy grey - looks lovely but is it worth it:
navygrey.co/products/the-relaxed-charcoal-grey?pr_prod_strat=copurchase&pr_rec_id=46ed02436&pr_rec_pid=6646405464130&pr_ref_pid=6790939213890&pr_seq=uniform

I have not bought from these brands before so have no idea about fit or quality. I am short and skinny.

Woolovers are ok but roll neck lambswool
might not be great. A bit itchy? The NC one is a cotton mix so not warm. BlueGrey is lovely. That’s the best one in my view.

LunaTheCat · 12/02/2023 21:09

if you can afford always go better quality… it will last several seasons.
I am in Southern Hemisphere and looking forward to wearing an alpaca/wool jersey I bought in Cos UK whilst visiting at Christmas!

redspottedmug · 12/02/2023 21:14

M&S or Uniqlo cashmere - but buy from the men's department. I live in mine.

Notcontent · 12/02/2023 21:16

Thank you both. My birthday is coming up so the splurge version might be an option.

@redspottedmug i buy a lot from Uniqlo but their jumpers haven’t inspired me much recently. The men’s don’t fit me well as I am very petite. (Middle aged but short and skinny! )

On eBay

Wyse cashmere hoodie
Brora
Chinti and Parker cashmere

FiddleLeaf · 12/02/2023 21:20

I have this in navy and it’s beautiful www.oliveclothing.com/new/women/p-oliveunique-20191124-002-grey-jane-turtleneck-jumper-grey

roses2 · 12/02/2023 21:21

Definitely look at an alpaca wool jumper - unbelievably warm!

Notcontent · 12/02/2023 21:47

@Chocolateteabag thank you! I do actually buy a lot of second hand clothes so might end up buying something like that. If I do buy something expensive new, I try to make sure it’s a very “considered” buy.

Oh heck - didn't mean to come over as preachy but I do find that cashmere quality has declined so much over the last few years that pre loved can be soo much better than new

But should have actually said that!

Depends what you want to spend. I have one of those Woolovers lambswool polo necks in navy, it's fine, not a special jumper but a basic one I can wear without worrying about taking too much care of it and it washes fine in the hand/wool wash setting of the washing machine. I don't find it itchy and it's one of the better Woolovers jumpers I've had, but quite simple and not massively stylish. But I have more special jumpers that I cherish too that cost more and I take more care of. You can usually get a 20% discount code for Woolovers so they are cheap. I wouldn't buy something that isn't 100% wool, it won't be as warm or last as well. I got a lovely jumper from the Croft house recently, not this exact one, but it is gorgeous and definitely better quality than Woolovers. They have some grey ones like this, but do need hand washing:

I’ve had success with knitwear from Olive too: warm and it has lasted well

Valkirie · 12/02/2023 22:35

I can also commend this cozy jumper to you: www.sezane.com/en/product/louise-jumper/mid-grey#size-XXS

mynameiscalypso · 12/02/2023 22:37

This is basically the thread of my dreams. I adore a grey jumper. I have a perfect one from New Look of all places which is slightly past its best now but has been a much treasured item of clothing for many years. I need to think about replacing it so will very much enjoy pottering around these links.

TizerorFizz · 12/02/2023 22:55

M&S has a grey cashmere roll neck right now and quite a few other grey pullovers. Cos has some too but more pricey.

YourWinter · 12/02/2023 23:04

I’m always so terrified of spoiling “good” clothes - a pull from picking the cat up, a mark from cooking or eating something messy - that I end up not wearing them. I’d rather buy lovely quality second hand clothes than pay the same for a new but less good item. I’m looking for another lambswool polo neck on eBay and in charity shops!

TizerorFizz · 13/02/2023 08:15

Live life! Modern lambswool is ok but it’s lively to own something special. Don’t do anything messy whilst wearing it!

plumduck · 13/02/2023 08:16

I'd go cheaper so you can wear and wash it loads

watchfulwishes · 13/02/2023 08:19

I like the M&S men's jumpers, all wool. I couldn't spend £225 on something so plain, it just feels like you're paying for marketing.

Cantonet · 13/02/2023 08:35

I would buy a decent quality Cashmere jumper. A good quality jumper will last for years. Cos is one of the best for Cashmere. I also like M&S, Whistles & Scott & Scott on BrandAlley.
You don't have to be precious with Cashmere. I cook & do everything in mine. The old fairy liquid & warm water on any stain works well.

Onthewholeitsgood · 13/02/2023 08:40

Look at what they are made of. If you want to be warm you need wool. But thin wool isn’t that warm, I find cashmere needs layering up…

Cantonet · 13/02/2023 09:42

There's lots of Grey Jumpers on Brandalley in Wool or Cashmere. Some really lovely ones and a brilliant price in some cases.

Noodle421 · 14/02/2023 18:36

I love the Navygrey relaxed jumper you linked. I have it in another colour. Excellent quality. Beautiful fit. Flattering. Worth every penny IMO. I haven’t washed it yet but aired and steamed it between wears which really freshens it up. I give it a little gentle de bobble from time to time with the complimentary comb they provide. I’ll hand wash it when the time comes, no way is it going in the machine. Beautiful wool that requires a little bit of gentle care and hopefully it will look good for years.

KirstenBlest · 14/02/2023 18:53

The nobody's child one won't be warm

Woolovers quality is fine

The navygrey one is nice but expensive
