First skinny jeans, now they’ve come for the floral midi dress

I’ve not owned one myself but have heard enough people extolling their virtues and seen how flattering and easy to wear they are to highly doubt they’re going anywhere.

Are you bored of them yet?

Who actually decides these things anyway? I've heard for a while that skinny jeans are on the out but every clothes shop I've been in still have the widest selection of them than any other type of jeans and I still see people wearing them as a wardrobe staple.

Hoolihan · 11/02/2023 09:33

Went to a lunch last spring and four of us turned up in very similar floral midis, trainers and denim jacket, it was at that point that I realised it had all gone too far 😅

NatashaDancing · 11/02/2023 09:36

OliviaEmmaSmith · 11/02/2023 05:59

Which shoes do you wear instead? I haven't moved on from the white trainers 😂

Occasionally sneakers, in winter, lace up ankle boots but mainly ballet pumps- (which a poster on another thread authoritatively declared "dated" and which Vogue declared."Take First Position On The SS23 Catwalks")

Wouldn't it be amazing if JL could actually ask us what we want?

Right, we need to attract women, aged ..... into our shops. Let's ask them what they will actually buy.

My list would be:
Decent fitted shirts, in interesting colours and patterns, with proper length arms.
Jumpers that go past your belly, in warm fabric, not acrylic. Long arms.
V neck t shirt tops.
No ruffles.
Dresses to fit different body shapes. I don't need 8 badly fitting dresses in different fabrics, how about 1 pattern, but in different shapes? I'll have one for women with long bodies and big boobs please.

GrapesOfRoss · 11/02/2023 09:28

Love that they’ve illustrated this with a photo of JL’s new avant-garde, bleeding edge alternative to a midi dress with flowers….a midi dress with leaves 😂

It's basically a hybrid midi swing/shirt dress. So still midi and patterned Smile

Yarrawonga · 11/02/2023 09:40

I never succumbed to the fashion so never got bored with it.

Midi doesn’t suit me and I don’t like floral anything. I don’t own any white trainers either.

Sunshineboo · 11/02/2023 09:40

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 11/02/2023 06:56

They were never flattering they make you look like a sack of spuds.

Its a dress to conceal flaws not flatter a nice figure.

as someone with a horrid figure this is rather the point!

QueenOfThorns · 11/02/2023 09:42

I really struggled to find plain, comfy t-shirt dresses last year, but I just picked this up with my groceries in Asda: direct.asda.com/george/women/dresses/khaki-basic-mini-t-shirt-dress/GEM1000771,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C1

£12! And it has pockets!!! I don’t care whether it’s ‘in’ or not, I’m going to be wearing it this summer, possibly even with leggings Shock

Lawandsawdus · 11/02/2023 09:45

I heard an interview on the radio news about this with an editor I think from Vogue. I was just waiting for the interviewer to ask whether this isn’t just a marketing ploy to sell more stuff as women already have the dresses. Didn’t get asked, just stuff about what new trends.

xJoy · 11/02/2023 09:45

not a look that ever suited me. I'm only 5'1'' and I always felt very scruffy in a floral dress. Even when I was slim, at 5'1'' a dress with trainers just never looked right on me. I'm sure many small women will say it worked for them but nope, I bought a couple over the years and they never got out of the wardrobe.

There are a few other things that are supposed staples, the white shirt Confused no, I'd have make up on the collar and a coffee splash on one boob by 10am

puppacup · 11/02/2023 09:46

The 00s are coming back so trainers may be replaced with ankle boots & ballet pumps.

shouldhavetakenmorenotice · 11/02/2023 09:46

This is hilarious - like John Lewis have any sway over what's in fashion.

Listening to them talk about it on R4 news yesterday evening was cringe making. The BBC are completely horrendous at reporting on fashion. It's like the early scenes of that Drew Barrymore movie when she goes back to school as an undercover cop/student.

ThighMistress · 11/02/2023 09:48

I went to the Tiffany exhibition in London last year. Every single woman (and it was a packed exhibition) was wearing a floral midi dress and white trainers.

The thing is it is a great outfit for the…er… middle-aged woman. Dress flowing and cool, hides mum tum, covers knees.. and as for trainers - bliss!

When did either of those go away?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/02/2023 09:52

I don't like floral prints, so never went for this look. I did feel like there weren't a lot of other dress options in stores though (I wear dresses a lot). It would be great to see some variety.

There are loads of different jeans styles available to buy, so it's not the same as skinny jeans, in my opinion.

Netcam · 11/02/2023 09:54

puppacup · 11/02/2023 09:16

I'd add 'leather biker jacket' to your list

they are back in!

I don't mind Nike airforce but find the black ones look orthopaedic

Any black trainer with a black sole looks bad imo.

You're proper old when comfort becomes the overriding fashion criterion.

and we do have an ageing population!

Well, I'll have a go at defending the black trainer. Or maybe I'm just proper old, but I don't care. I have 2 pairs of black trainers and I love them, one like this and another almost identical with green instead of red. They are super comfortable, waterproof, I can walk in them for hours and hike in them, but also wear them with leggings, shorts or simple tank dresses. And they don't show the dirt or stain like white ones. I don't think I look frumpy in them but I'm 53 and don't care fashion so what do I know? www.hoka.com/en/gb/outlet-women/challenger-6-gore-tex/195719607098.html?source=shoppingsite_PLA_1116878-BBLC-05B&kpid=1116878-BBLC-05B&gclid=CjwKCAiAlp2fBhBPEiwA2Q10DxIKYFxugmHK2SKWP6Vs8JwY6SNB-dYjURQwct__MvpA7tIlbMszDhoCYvQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

puppacup · 11/02/2023 09:55

@NatashaDancing ballet pumps definitely were out for a bit & I think trainers replaced many ankle boots opportunity's. I've not work either for years but have started swapping my loafers for ballets at work.

TheDead · 11/02/2023 09:56

It won't bother me one iota. I've never worn the midi dress with trainers & I haven't worn skinny jeans since 2020. I'm 53.

I remember driving though our city last summer & there was some outdoor concert on & there were literally droves of women wearing midi floral dresses, white trainers, denim jackets & Cross body bags. It looked like some bizarre dress codnoe! Seriously it was a strange sight
It was like seeing all the women in identikit amish dresses!

Nottodaty · 11/02/2023 09:56

Skinny jeans and dresses suit my figure - I’m tall size 14 with a mum tummy.

Mum jeans just make me look like I’m about to be the school sports day sack race. I have to be careful with the cut of dresses as a few times one did seem to make everyone think I was pregnant so no belts or ones that slim at the waist - embarrassing when people ask when is it due.

i don’t really look at what others are wearing , I’m going for comfort.

Greenfairydust · 11/02/2023 09:57

A bit of a silly comment really.

Floral dresses have been around for decades and most women prefer midi or maxi dresses, especially as we get older, to shorter dresses I would think.

I like them because I think they look good and are also comfortable. I am not going to squeeze myself into some tight, short dress I can't move freely in.

So they will always be a part of my wardrobe.

Plus I think it is a bit naff to listen to what you should or should not wear every year from one company or another. Better to find your own, timeless style.

Chersfrozenface · 11/02/2023 09:59

ShellsOnTheBeach · 11/02/2023 06:26

Oh goody, so there'll be loads of them in the charity shops soon?

I'll stock up!!

This.

puppacup · 11/02/2023 09:59

@Netcam At least that has some colour on it & is not so bad but plain leather black soled shoes just remind me of school boys I'm afraid. Love a white sole on a black trainer though, I've had black converse since the 90s. They still fit unlike the denim jacket 😭

AbreathofFrenchair · 11/02/2023 09:59

Posts like this always confuse me.

Presumably if you like them, you already own them and therefore wear them.

Why would you stop because the guardian decides the trend need to be over?!

Same with skinny Jean's or whatever you enjoy wearing.

And how many of you on here really only dress to what is deemed current trends and them get rid of as soon as told?!

No wonder fast fashion is a problem. All the ethically produced clothes will make no different if you continually update your wardrobe to attempt to stay fashionable.

If you like it, wear it.

Were they? Never noticed, never owned trainers.

If you like it, wear it.

I agree with this, wear what makes you happy.
