Where do I find beautiful clothes?

I’ve just realised that wearing beautifully-cut/shaped clothes really makes me feel good in myself. Where can I get some lovely pieces, please stylish people?

I bought a couple of Ghost dresses recently, one of which looked very expensive (due to the way it was cut), but neither suited me and I was disappointed. Thank you!

What d’you mean exactly? There are countless brands, shops, outlets selling beautiful clothes at a wide range of prices. Do you just want a list of them all?

Could you perhaps narrow it down a bit?

Are you in the UK?

Are you happy to shop online?

How much do you want to spend?

New or otherwise?

What size are you?

Where do you want to wear any new clothes? Day to day, special events, work, leisure? What’s your lifestyle?

Do you have any environmental / ethical restrictions?

Hi @CrkdLttrCrkdLttr, sorry my post was neither very clear nor detailed. 🙈 I’m in the UK, happy to shop online, around £100 or less per item (unless it’s a real investment piece like a coat or bag), very happy to buy secondhand, size 8, items for work and going out (will explain a bit more below), I’m not keen on polyester.

I’m an academic, but it works quite well for me to look relatively smart (ie. jeans are fine but pulled together with smart top or a blazer). I like feminine clothes, but seem to be veering away from my love of pattern to plainer things. I like quite a lot of what Kate Middleton wears (although my day-to-day wardrobe doesn’t need to be that formal and can have a bit more edge and perhaps a bit more arty-ness, IYSWIM!) and Meghan Markle, too. I guess I want to simplify my wardrobe - aiming for a refined look. Hope that helps a bit! Happy to answer any more questions. 😊

Sezane or Theory?

Ihateboris · 10/02/2023 16:16

Maje and Sandro (French brands)are beautifully cut, feminine clothes. You can often find second hand items on Vestaire and Vinted.

WeFollowRivers · 10/02/2023 16:19

I'd ordered a dress from Thought, quality & fit lovely x

Depends what suits you - white co do some gorgeous knits etc and linens in the summer

Ah …

Well, it’s hardly surprising Ghost didn’t live up to your hopes - it’s neither edgy nor arty. (Though I recall the clothes seemed wonderfully fresh and new in the erm … 80s …)

But essentially you like clean lines and sharp colours and at least the appearance of limitless expense?

Maybe you need to set aside a couple of evenings and peruse a few large online shops whose raison d’être is the sale of beautiful, expensive clothes by numerous contemporary designers? Try:

Matches Fashion
Net-a-Porter
Browns
SSense
La Garçonne

There are sure to be some brands that take your fancy. (Then you can sign up to their individual mailing lists and be alerted to their sales.)

You could try Roman or Klass

but then somewhere like TK Maxx or Boundary Mill or similar outlets would have quite a variety to browse.

REP22 · 10/02/2023 17:15

I like a lot of the things in Joe Browns. They're good quality and reasonably priced. Quite pleasant to deal with as well. www.joebrowns.co.uk/womens

I’m afraid one or two posters are having a laugh and trying to waste your no doubt valuable time … Hmm

SuffolkBargeWoman · 10/02/2023 17:38

Roman ? Klass? Joe Browns ?
Seriously @Rainbow1901 and @REP22 ?

Sezane and Me + Em would both be good places to look. Maje, Sandro and Ba&Sh also good, but a bit pricier.

I was just thinking the same!
There was a recommendation on another thread for a really awful cheap polyester jumpsuit from Roman, and I keep getting ads for it now!

I was going to suggest these as well. Also check out Aspiga. Thing is you're not going to get much for £100 from these brands.
Save up and invest in some pieces. They'll last you from years to come.

Definitely don't go for anything from the likes of Joe Browns, Roman, etc.

Maybe check out Sosander - they may have something similar to what you're after at a lower price

LifeunderMarrs · 10/02/2023 17:52

The nicest clothes I've bought in the last couple of years have been from Poetry, but their prices have really gone up IMO.

They're mainly online but have two stores in London, in Chelsea and Marylebone:

This ^^

Maireas · 10/02/2023 17:52

Have a look at Wolf and Badger. I've had some good pieces from there.

ShangPie · 10/02/2023 17:53

Worth checking out an old thread on this board titled ‘in pursuit of elegance’ or something similar.

Lots of great tips and brand recommendations on there, as well as a good philosophy on how to approach shopping

Maireas · 10/02/2023 17:55

I really like Wyse London.
Also try The Fold.

REP22 · 10/02/2023 17:55

I make no apologies for liking Joe Browns. I'm happy to be pointed at and sneered about. Reminds me of school.

Maireas · 10/02/2023 17:59

The OP wants beautifully cut and styled clothes, @REP22 so Joe Browns doesn't automatically spring to mind. If you like the clothes, great, taste is very subjective, but I think (correct me if I'm wrong) she wants a different look.

Riverlee · 10/02/2023 18:00

Do you know what body shape you are? Once you’ve determined this and know what clothes suit that shape, it gets alot easier to find good clothes. Also knowing your season as well. I’ve had alot more compliments since doing this, whether wearing a dress from Sainsbury or Hobbs.
