Where do I find beautiful clothes?

MadameSapphire · 10/02/2023 13:39

I’ve just realised that wearing beautifully-cut/shaped clothes really makes me feel good in myself. Where can I get some lovely pieces, please stylish people?

I bought a couple of Ghost dresses recently, one of which looked very expensive (due to the way it was cut), but neither suited me and I was disappointed. Thank you!

I love wraplondon but so much of their stuff is dry clean only. I've got to the stage in my life where if I love something I would buy it even if it's expensive but the dry clean only shit puts me off.

Valhalla17 · 11/02/2023 10:48

Reiss?

RosesAndHellebores · 11/02/2023 10:48

I agree with MissMoon. I'd also add Whistles. Perhaps too a trip to a department store such as Peter Jones where many of the names mentioned are under one roof or have individual shops nearby.

It sounds mad but I have a few tops from Kettlewell. They are well cut and come in a wider variety of colours than you will find on the high street.

Autograph and M&S's Jaeger range are worth a sniff.

missmoon · 11/02/2023 10:57

@CrkdLttrCrkdLttr possibly, but MH does also have quite a lot of classic well-cut tops, shirts, jackets, etc, that might be a good fit? The styling on the website makes them look more crunchy than they are!

I forgot to mention Joseph, which is also expensive but can often find heavily reduced in Net-a-Porter and similar.

Take 'Dry Clean Only' wiht a big pinch of salt. I often cold wash with delicate detergent stuff that is dry clean only and slow spin it inside a knotted cotton pillowcase to protect delicate stitching or buttons. Comes out way fresher and cleaner than being wrung through some stale chemicals at the dry cleaners.

Directing OP to Net a porter, browns etc for £100 budget per item is hardly going to work is it!

Yes, it definitely works in the sale. I've just ordered some work trousers for just over £100 in the Matches in the sale section.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/02/2023 11:31

I think if you like the polished Kate Middleton/Megan Markle look @MadameSapphire I would look in places like Reiss, L K Bennett, and Hobbs.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/02/2023 11:33

Depends upon your style but Toast clothing.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 11/02/2023 11:35

@missmoon I’m old and have been wearing MH for half my life!

And I think it’s mostly perfect with an academic backdrop.

Would have been my first suggestion if the OP hadn’t sighed for a tiara!Grin

@WowIlikereallyhateyou the title of this thread is Where do I find beautiful clothes? The OP does state a price preference - but also indicates she’s happy to shop second hand.

So it seems sensible to give her an idea of some mainstream brands that produce reliably lovely clothes. I’m sure she’s smart enough to identify brands she likes the look of and decide for herself whether to buy items massively reduced in the sales, or to search Vestiare, Vinted, wherever, and source them that way.

Yes, and your point is?
my point is i dont know why people are suggesting shopping at places where op is simply not going to get anything for £100 or very little at least.

Very limited choice for £100 in the matches/nap sale.

Another vote for Poetry. Good quality and mainly plain. natural fibres.

I’d never heard of them till now and I like what I see.

Yes, that's because the sale has been on for a while.

Mercurial123 · 11/02/2023 12:37

Marie Marot does good quality shirts.

GrinGrinGrin Etc!

Extraordinary that someone on the internet is trying to tell us it is impossible to successfully shop in the way we choose.

But I realise some people take things more literally than others. @WowIlikereallyhateyou let me try again. When someone (who is apparently gainfully employed and not on the breadline) says

“I would prefer not to spend much more than £100 per item, unless …”

What I read is

“If I happen to see an amazing silk shirt reduced from £500 to £160 I might buy it if I really like it. And then buy fewer other things.”

Or

”Gosh, I had no idea about that wonderful purveyor of jeans! I can’t afford them full price but I’ll look for some on Vestiare.”

”There’s just one MaxMara jacket in my size for £450! I’m going to buy it because then I won’t need another one for at least five years.”

The OP didn’t say £100 was a strict rule. It’s not the law that she only spends that amount at any one time.

And, to repeat, my understanding is that she started the thread because she felt she doesn’t have much idea of contemporary brands. The multi-stores I listed each carry multiple brands with prices rising from upper High St to stratospheric. They are not all Gucci and Valentino - at the moment she could probably find a t shirt for less than £50 amongst them.

Exhausted now …

Another vote for Me+Em

Thanks for the diatribe.
I am not telling anyone how to shop, thanks.
It obviously must only be me who would find it incredibly difficult to find something on Matches/NAP for £100 ish.
N.B please do not reply as I wouldn’t want you to get anymore exhausted than you already are!

ArseMenagerie · 11/02/2023 13:16

This thread has taken a turn…
id suggest French brands like some pp
so
sezane
maje
six soeurs

and some Brit brands for slim people like
reiss
cos (quality variable)
jigsaw I think will be good for you

Bumping before this disappears...

Slim pickings at this time of year, as @Mercurial123 noted.

No one had posted for a few hours so I bumped it. Really useful thread with some brands I hadn't thought of.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 11/02/2023 18:31

Nb - don’t buy the Margaret Howell cardigan from La Garconne! It’s £155 on the MH website. (La G. is weird in this respect - better for browsing than buying.)
