I'm after a good primer/foundation for 'mature ' skin, I feel so rubbish about it at the moment, it's dull and have suddenly developed chappy orange peel looking skin and under eye bags. It's really affecting my confidence, seems what ever primer/foundation I use, nothing makes it look better!

Any help greatly received!

I'm also after a great primer! Following with interest

theothersideof40 · 06/02/2023 10:18

@tilestoclean follow away!
I'm just looking at chemical peels near me, as my skin is truly ageing rapidly!

My SPF is a great primer: Heliocare Advanced Gel SPF 50... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002KDTGVE?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

Also recommend Liz Earle Cleanse and polish used daily, to keep skin clean and exfoliated.

savvy7 · 06/02/2023 18:00

I too find that SPF is a good primer. I use Ultrasun

savvy7 · 06/02/2023 18:00

For foundation I mix concealer with Garnier BB cream

TheOGCCL · 06/02/2023 18:01

I'd focus on skincare not make up. Have you considered a subscription to Dermatica or Skin and Me?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/02/2023 18:09

I know it's aimed at a younger market, but the Glossier serum primer and foundation (skin tint) are the best thing I've used in years. Even out skin without clogging it up, nice and moisturising, gives a lovely healthy tint.

theothersideof40 · 07/02/2023 20:58

Thanks for your replies everyone, I know I need to up my skincare regime, but just hoping some decent make up would help too.

I switched to tinted moisturiser - Laura Mercier - the lighter coverage plus a bit of concealer here and there works better for me.

Artemisty · 07/02/2023 21:47

What have you tried already and what is your current skincare routine?
Might help in order to make recommendations..

MaverickGooseGoose · 07/02/2023 21:48

I'm six weeks into tret and don't need foundation anymore.

Fr0styday · 07/02/2023 21:50

A second vote for Liz Earle cleanse and polish - I also use Liz Earle moisturiser. When I'm religious about cleansing, my skin looks brighter and better. I then just use the Trinny BFF skin perfector which I think just lifts my skin a bit without feeling caked in make up. I'm 55.

Fundays12 · 07/02/2023 21:52

If you focus on your skincare it will make a huge difference and drink loads of water. A weekly face exfoliation and face mask at home will make a huge difference. Boots do some great offer online.
Body shop have some good face primers too

StarDolphins · 07/02/2023 21:55

I don’t wear any foundation at all. I think it ages over 40’s (just my opinion). I just make sure my face never gets dry.

I scrub with liz Earle, then use retinol toner then the ordinary acid 2% then Weleda skin food! Eye make up &bit of blusher!

theothersideof40 · 08/02/2023 06:49

Thank you for all your replies, I will look into them properly.
I don't have a set skincare routine, it baffles me if I'm honest.
I take off my make up with a cleanser, then apply vitamin c every other night, then moisturise. Only just started the vitamin c.
In a morning, I use niacinamide, moisturiser and sunscreen.
Totally rubbish I know.
I think the combination of peri menopause and my mums death, havnt helped my skin, my hair is also thinning at the front too 🥲
I've been looking at collagen powders, to see if that can help my hair and skin..

Have a hydrafacial. I had one yesterday and my skin looks about five years younger, it’s astonishing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 08/02/2023 09:46

Sorry to hear about your Mum's death OP. I think the ravages of grief can really show in the face. Flowers

If you're open to it, self care by way of skincare is very therapeutic. I enjoy taking ten minutes at the end of every day to thoroughly cleanse my face, massage and apply my serums and oils. I have the radio on in the bathroom while I do it, or play music too.

For dull/grey/dry skin you could try an AHA serum or toner to exfoliate any dead skin. Keep up with the Vitamin C, it makes a huge difference. For hydration, a hyaluronic moisturiser used on damp skin can work wonders. I really rate Hada Labo, ( big Superdrug's tend to stock it)which I've recently started using. It really plumps the skin up.

If you can afford a series of hydrating facials that will give you a really good kick start for a good routine.

Take care of yourself Flowers

I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I agree that grief, and the stress that accompanies it, can be very bad for your skin so I'd also cut yourself some slack.

I'm 46, have very dry skin and it's definitely getting a little more tricky now.

I have been using an oil based cleanser for years. I used just plain almond oil for a long time but recently swapped to Green Clean from Farmacy which I love. I am not sure it does a better job but the way it makes me feel is worth it even though it's ridiculously expensive.

Agree with other posters that a Hylaronic Acid based moisturiser is important. I use a neutrogenia night gel. Stick with your vitamin C but I'd swap it to the morning as it helps to protect your skin when out and about.

As you get older, more exfoliation is necessary. I'm using an acid exfoliator/toner in the morning and, when I can be bothered, a Clarins face peel. I should TOTALLY use the face peel weekly - it's astonishing what it does to my skin. Makes me glow, and makes it smooth so that make up goes on beautifully etc.

The primer I'm always advocating is the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched one. I find it has a lovely moisturising affect as well as being a good primer. It does have quite a strong scent though so definitely don't buy it without trying first in case you don't like it.

My favourite foundations have been Bobbi Brown as well for a long time but I've struggled to get hold of the one I like so I'm using a NARS one now. It's nice, but I've found it really does need to be applied with a brush or a sponge as otherwise it's a bit cake-y.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 08/02/2023 10:50

Yes agree with a peel. One I find incredibly good is this one:

( you can get it cheaper on Amazon)

EverydayEssentials · 08/02/2023 14:48

Another vote for Glossier. Futuredew serum, Skin tint and stretch concealer. All excellent products.

Netcam · 08/02/2023 18:04

Sorry to hear about your mum and hugs to you. I'm 53 and wash my face with Tisserand tea tree face wash, my skin has always been quite oily although has improved in that respect after the menopause. Then I use a thin cotton muslin face cloth to exfoliate and moisturise with argan oil. I don't wear make up, although I did get some lipstick and concealer for under the eyes for my wedding in October, but only used it that day and haven't touched it since! But I'm still here on the Style and Beauty cos I like nice clothes.

Stressybetty · 11/02/2023 19:21

Have you tried a skin consultation? The free boots no 7 one is really fantastic if they still do them.

Can I recommend Bliss Block Star for combination foundation and sunscreen and Elf halo glow liquid filter for evenings when you want something more glowy. I also second hydrofacials and gentle retinol overnight. When I started being interested in skincare (I'm 45) I pretty much bought anything India Knight recommended. Good luck xx

theothersideof40 · 12/02/2023 10:26

Thank you so much for your replies.
I'm trying to go through all your suggestions.
I've bought the red peel to do once a week, and started using the vitamin c in a morning.
Hopefully that will help with the orange peel skin texture and I'll get some decent primer etc.
