posh dress for summer wedding

user75765 · 30/01/2023 17:51

Help required. I need a dress for my DSis's wedding in August. Its a fairly posh event but with a laid back vibe (large teepee style marquee in the grounds of a manor house).

I'm 5'4, size 8/10, long hair. Tend towards dressy.

DSis2 (not the one getting married) is wearing this:

any ideas would be welcomed. Flowers

I actually have this dress in black/gold. It's the most flattering dress Ive ever worn. Silver isn't generally my colour, I'm generally a warm toned gold/bronze wearing girl so it would be a departure for me and might not be right with my skin

This one might be less loo roll doll, more floaty summer posh boho??

Although I fear it might be strictly for those with pert bossoms

Try Kevan John. There is a small exclusive shop in my town who stock him and he is very popular.

I just bought this even though I have nothing to wear it too yet! It was calling my name.

I think it would look lovely with a tan and some 70s style orange block heel sandals.

Argh, to!

Gruelle · 01/02/2023 02:33

You do like a lot of perturbation of fabric, OP! When you said ‘dressy’ I thought you meant ‘formal’ - but you mean ‘flouncy’.

Vampire’s Wife - opposite of flouncy. Over budget. Slightly gorgeous. And at least as lovely as your sister’s frock, if not more.

If you want floral take a look at reformation. They have a number of floral patterned midi dresses. I especially love this one https://www.thereformation.com/products/petites-nadira-dress/1310924CSW.html?dwvar1310924CSWW_color=CSW

No I don’t! That’s part of the problem. I tend to be quite dressy. I am small but I have boobs so I avoid anything loose which makes me look much bigger than I am. I don’t really do long because I’m small and I don’t do pale colours etc. I don’t really do boho. I’m just struggling to find boho posh garden event style.

I linked the flouncy ones because that was the first site suggested. I think they’re beautiful but I suspect I’d look rubbish in them since I’m not 5 foot 9 and flat chested.

DietCroak · 01/02/2023 07:25

I love Needle and Thread but I’m not sure it’s a great option with big boobs- those dresses look great (imo) on very slender people but a bit matronly if you’re curvy. Have a look at Nancy Mac, maybe Ghost?

Krakenes · 01/02/2023 11:13

That pink Jigsaw one is beautiful!! Think that will definitely suit someone who is bigger up top.

thisplaceisweird · 01/02/2023 11:30

Tell us about your style! It's hard to recommend without knowing who you are - how would you describe yourself/your style in 3 words?

My immediate thought would be to look at Self Portrait, Rixo, Rotate Birger Christensen, Zimmerman

sleepwhenidie · 03/02/2023 13:37

What about this one OP? www.meandem.com/bold-paisley-print-cheesecloth-cut-out-maxi-dress-cream-electric-blue

MargaritaRita · 03/02/2023 13:46

That Jigsaw fuschia pink is my favourite so far. Looks classy and easy to wear. Amazing colour too.

astarsheis · 03/02/2023 22:11

Have you thought about renting a dress? My DD is going through the going to a wedding every couple months stage and she rents the most gorgeous dresses from by rotation and HURR.
It means she can wear dresses that she would be unlikely to wear again for a fraction of the price and always looks fabulous.
She has even started renting out dresses herself.

Stravaig · 04/02/2023 07:30

How can you decide on a single dress this far in advance? Temp could be anything from low teens to full heatwave! A range of options, and natural fabrics. Ditto, the bride.

User76765 · 04/02/2023 08:25

Well the bride bought hers months ago. Everywhere told her that she needed to buy a year in advance due to lead times for production and then alteration times. I’m willing to take a punt on knowing likely weather in august. I’m not leaving it until two days before.

I’ll do some more browsing today. I saw a nice marchesa one yesterday (in the sale, I’m not remortgaging the house!)

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/02/2023 08:58

Anyone mentioned Temperley?

I mean, it's outrageously expensive. But it's gorgeous.

As an aside, Didn't Needle and Thread used to be more Ethereal and embroidered? I know designers move on, but those frilly dresses look like a polyester fire hazard waiting to happen.

Baxdream · 04/02/2023 09:02

As someone who went to a wedding during the heatwave last year, just make sure you consider this aspect, eg no sleeves and not too fitted!

NashvilleQueen · 04/02/2023 09:02

Wow the Temperley dress is absolutely amazing but £3200 on a £400 budget is quite a stretch from the OP!

mdh2020 · 04/02/2023 09:03

I think you should just buy a nice summer dress that you like and can wear again. As has been shown here, everyone’s taste is different. They year I had three summer weddings, I bought an ensemble of almost chiffon trousers, camisole and jacket. Think about what you will be comfortable in.

mdh2020 · 04/02/2023 09:04

Just remembered - DS always says, no one will be looking at you - the bride is the centre of attention.
