Is it possible to get that "posh gloss" in ones 40s?

Out of curiosity? And if so what would one need to do?!

I follow kat farmer - does my bum look 40.
She's looking more & more glossy & does detail the tweakments/ hair extensions/treatments/colours. Also recent tips on make up. She appears to have stopped doing the weekend scruffy shots, in exchange for filtered shots saying she's wearing no make up.
It's all really interesting & a bit terrifying.
I'm too frightened to have anything injectable as I'm allergic to so many things.
I looked young until my 50's .... naturally.
But I'm aging now for sure.

I agree
The jumper she was touting had a stain on it. I am over it

She is getting increasingly unrelatable, sadly, I used to really like her look.

I think diet is equally as important as the hairdresser/nails/expensive clothes. If you eat well you will hopefully have healthy looking skin and hair. Even less expensive clothes will still look good on a slim figure.

Lookingoutside · 30/01/2023 17:40

Of course it is.

Hair trimmed regularly, nails done (shortish and neutral, black, navy or a shade of red. No nail art.)

Brows threaded and tinted, lashes lifted and tinted, no extensions(goes for hair as well.)

Walking and lifting weights.

Yes, but you won't look any younger.
You will look healthy & appropriately aged .
If you're on the TV you have to look youngish/ageless or your career will be over. The absolute minimum appears to be Botox, teeth whitening & more recently cheek fillers.

I’ve stopped following Kat Farmer. I find her so disingenuous. She went through a stage when she started her Invisalign of looking better, but I think she’s gone too far with the fillers. Her cheeks look awful. And I don’t believe anything she advertises. She jumps from one product to the next claiming it’s the best thing in the world, then the next week she’s advertising a different thing claiming it’s the best thing in the world!

Also very easy for her to look polished when she’s spending ridiculous amounts of money on her clothes and walking about with one of her Birkins on her arm!

I think here are far better beauty/skincare/fashion accounts to follow than Kat Farmer.

What is it on here at the moment with everyone looking for tips on how to ape wealth or avoid the (indrawn breath) 'look of poverty'? Is that what you are actually checking for when you look in the mirror: 'Do I look as if I have indulged in the time- and money-intensive grooming habits of the rich today?'

Don't know about you, but I'd really prefer not to resemble the serfs and villeins wading through pigshit or the village folk with their pitchforks and blazing torches held aloft in pursuit of The Monster if I can avoid it.

I've been watching Slow Horses on Apple TV (excellent by the way), and Kristin Scott Thomas is in it, obviously no botox, and I don't think fillers. She has a very good bone structure, and definitely looks after herself, but loads of wrinkles. And she looks AMAZING. I wish we had more of that on TV. I get that it's hard when you are judged on your appearance, but if more people were honest, and there were more examples of women ageing - ageing well, but still ageing - it would be so much better, wouldn't it?

Cileymyrus · 30/01/2023 19:14

Much of aging well is genetics. Including late menopause.

kat farmer must be nearer 50 now than 40?
i remember her from the old handbag forums.

Explodingatomickittens · 30/01/2023 20:20

Kat Farmer looks amazing for sure but there's obviously a lot of work in it!

I think you need good teeth, possibly perfected with Invisalign, good clear skin that shows a good diet, healthy looking..expensive clothes!

LimeCheesecake · 30/01/2023 21:19

The posh gloss isn’t always fake young - but can look older and have a posh gloss! It’s the “well looked after” look. So hair in good condition, cut and if coloured, done regularly and not too brassy. Eat well, drink water, sleep lots. Wear underwear that fits you, it makes the clothes on top always look better.

i used to make an effort with this but have let things slide. Because I don’t have the time or money, and that’s the posh bit isn’t it? For normal middle aged women, time and money are often in short supply.

my February goal (because January is too depressing for life changes) is to lose the extra couple of kg I’m carrying, drink less coffee and more water, and make more of an effort with my appearance, including my stubby nails. (Back to wearing rubber gloves to do housework.)

faffadoodledo · 30/01/2023 21:24

@PollyIndia the same thought struck me about Kirsten Scott Thomas. I enjoyed seeing her wrinkles in HD. Her face is utterly gorgeous.

faffadoodledo · 30/01/2023 21:25

She looks her age, but in a good way. I don't need to look 40 when I'm 56.

TheOGCCL · 30/01/2023 21:58

It's harder for sure. More time, more money. And easy to go too far a la Amanda Holden or similar.

Your hair is thinner, your skin is dryer, your teeth discolour and may start sticking out as your mouth shrinks. Your face hollows, your eyelashes get sparser. You lose tone, colour and definition.

Explodingatomickittens · 30/01/2023 21:58

@PollyIndia funny you should mention Kirsten Scott Thomas. I watched four weddings & a funeral with dh Saturday night & was admiring her beautiful features. She has that natural posh gloss that money can't buy...

Also crushing slightly on KST. Loved how they styled her in Slow Horses. Kat, on the other hand, I don’t think she has the posh girl gloss. Her hair texture just doesn’t want to play (she has said this herself so don’t get me wrong) so it only looks good out of the salon. If you mean slim to be the same as posh girl gloss then sure but it relies on genetics and diet way more than anything you can add.

moderation in everything is surely the key. Don’t overdo smoking/eating/drinking/exercise.

That's me in my mid 50s! It definitely gets harder to maintain.

speakout · 31/01/2023 09:06

I think it starts from the inside out.

I am 60 I have no wish to look younger.
But I do want to look healthy and strong.

I eat well, get lots of sleep, exercise 5-6 hours a week.
I feel amazing. I have good posture, a slim body.
I care for my skin, it does have a few wrinkles, but it looks healthy.
Add to that some carefully chosen clothes and I feel amazing..

Divebar2021 · 31/01/2023 09:15

My god I find these threads weird…. A bit like “ how to look expensive” which I’ve seen before. Having a lot of time to indulge in all this marvellous me time would be a start wouldn’t it? Maybe give up work OP as a starting point and if you want to be like Kat Farmer go on gifted holidays every other month.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 31/01/2023 09:23

Id anyone has any tips on how to look generally less like a leper with almost constant blephatitis (a recent gift, thank you Universe. Not Confused), I'll take that.

Gawd I miss my mascara

Yes! You've defined what I want. I don't need to look younger. I just need to look good and healthy. I am despairing of the trend to obliterate all signs of aging. People use euphemisms to say 'I don't want to look younger, just fresher'... I just don't buy that!

It's probably a recession related thing. People are feeling the pinch and nervous of their standard of living taking a nosedive so they seek comfort in appearing outwardly affluent.

That’s probably very true. When my life goes tits up I tend to put fat more effort into my appearance- slap on the war paint and put your amour on ready to face the world with your head held high kinda thing.
the more comfortable and happy I’ve become, the more slobbish and less effort I make.
