What can I put on my skin?

Bodybarnet · 29/01/2023 23:18

I have sensitive skin so have always had to be careful but for some reason it has gone super sensitive and I can't seem to put anything on it. It is red, sore and feels so, so dry. If I put anything on, it feels like it is burning. I have tried all the usual recommendations such as cetraben but that makes it worse. I have been using a bit of castor oil but last time I did this for any length of time I got really bad spots.

Can tell me how to manage this? Should I be cleansing my face? I've been using Eve Lom but that stings so I'm not sure how to wash it. Help!

Dermol 500 and 600 you can get it prescribed by the GP. Also try products that are oat based like Aveeno. Also Vaseline works with all sorts strange skin aversions.

DaVariance · 29/01/2023 23:21

La Roche posay cicaplast works for a lot of people too

Dermalogica special cleanse gel is very gentle and effective

PousseyNotMoira · 29/01/2023 23:23

Face or body? And what are you currently cleansing with?

Aveeno was the only thing I could tolerate when my skin was like this a few months ago. Covid was the cause for me, weirdly. Maybe ask a pharmacist?

MistyRock · 29/01/2023 23:30

The problem with hot cloth cleansers is that water and dry skin is a bad combination. You need a cream cleanser that you remove with damp cotton wool pads. Wash off cleansers and balms just add to the dehydration. You then need a basic moisturiser like Nivea blue or Astral. Steer clear of anti aging creams (too many harsh chemicals). E45 etc is also no good as they use a chemical to bond together the water and oil components which many people are allergic too. Go back to basics and you'll find your skin will thank you for it.

MistyRock · 29/01/2023 23:31

Also essential oils sound nice, they're are obviously quite natural but they are also full of scent and can be very harsh.

Hyalauronic acid on wet skin (the ordinary has an excellent version and it’s cheap as chips): www.cultbeauty.co.uk/the-ordinary-hyaluronic-acid-2-b5-30ml/11363395.html

Leave to sink in for about a minute. Then La Roche Posay: www.cultbeauty.co.uk/la-roche-posay-toleriane-dermallergo-soothing-cream-for-sensitive-skin-40ml/12932546.html?affil=thgppc&gclid=Cj0KCQiAz9ieBhCIARIsACB0oGIhFwgWfp3eX8WVd7sJzjINcvEdvZbuxtnWbWrmHAw6A4k_dqjhUUcaAijdEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Use SPF every day (going out or staying in, use it). And double cleanse every night. Then moisturise (the above combo works for AM and PM).

I've been suffering from a terrible rash on my face like eczema and the only think that sorted it was cerave. Cetraben made it burn

PousseyNotMoira · 29/01/2023 23:33

Oh, and Cerave do excellent gentle cleansers.

Aveeno green top is best

Bodybarnet · 29/01/2023 23:34

The water thing totally makes sense, just need to try and find a cleanser I'm not allergic too. I've used hyaluronic acid before so I'll try that again.

Have you tried dermalogica ultra calming?

If you go to a dermalogica counter, they'll do a mini facial to see what works

Aveeno also do a calm and restore range, which I've found helpful in the past

Simple and E45 -avoid!

I use the Garnier rose one. I do not get on with hyaluronic acid personally. I stick to the most basic tried and tested creams that have stood the test of time. The only new product I love is Nuxe comforting facial balm. It's gorgeous and so lovely on sore dry skin.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/01/2023 23:39

CeraVe wash and moisturiser, give it 3 weeks and you'll be like a new woman.

MistyRock · 29/01/2023 23:41

Also baby lotion makes a good cream cleanser. Some will say what about the petroleum jelly, but that's nonsense. You are after all just wiping it straight off! Also petroleum jelly does have a place in skin care. It's just rubbish to totally dismiss it.

ThunderSocks · 29/01/2023 23:41

Honey makes a great soothing mask/cleanser - slather some on, leave for a few minutes, rinse off and pat dry. Can add some oats too. I find it really calms my skin down. Also clinique ddm is the only moisturiser I can tolerate.

Remember to only ever apply hyalauronic to wet skin. I can’t emphasise this enough. If you apply it to dry skin, it’ll dry you out.

PAFMO · 30/01/2023 06:27

Go back to something like CeraVe to cleanse and either Toleriane or anything that's a Cica cream for a while, as pps have recommended.
Hyaluronic can also sometimes sting depending on which it is and how it's been formulated.

Chocolateteabag · 30/01/2023 06:55

When my eczema is really going mad I use Vagisil to take the edge off the burn. I th en put Vaseline over the top

I normally do the hot cloth thing, but because I've used Protopic ointment so I get very flakey skin as a side effect. It's one you need a dermatologist to prescribe and it isn't perfect

Eurax also works sparingly - but that's mainly for my hands (pomphlox eczema there which comes up as tiny little blisters all over)

OutDamnedSpot · 30/01/2023 07:10

I have incredibly sensitive skin and go through phases when it reacts badly.
The products that have worked for me are:

  • La Roche Possay Toleraine range
  • Lush ultra bland (or ultra balm?)
  • Avene Cicalfate

Now that it’s calmed down a bit, I can also use Nuxe and Angela Langford.

dudsville · 30/01/2023 07:13

In your shoes i would ask my GP for a referral to dermatology.

WinterCarlisle · 30/01/2023 07:19

I had to (still do) wear FFP3 masks for work due to covid and they irritated my fave beyond belief. I actually had areas that were so sore they bled. Cerave was AMAZING. Once I got it under control I added in the ordinary hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. My skin’s been great since

Ladyofthelake53 · 30/01/2023 07:42

I go to bed with a thin layer of vaseline on and my face is very soft and plump next day. I dont use water on my face, i use baby lotion its not like the old pink stingy baby lotion now. I apply it and use cotton pads to remove, dry ones
