Lands End stuff

I owe them an apology! I just ordered two coats at over half price off in their mega sale. I always thought Lands End was strictly for snowstorms in middle America and not suited for central London life, but both are really well made and not as unstylish as I thought. Incredibly light and warm too, with great hoods, pockets and cuffs.

I am wondering if this is just because I am getting older and now putting function over form. Any other stuff that's good from Lands End? Their sale is fab.

@PAFMO, i'm referring to the styling in the websites and brochures.
They don't style them as fashion.

Shopping from brochures or from an ad in a newspaper is fine. I do it sometimes, although I'd probably order it on line after seeing it in print.

I'm not sure what you thought was "twatty" about my comment? As for ageism, I just wear what I like and what works for me, and I like the quality to be decent, and I want the clothes I love to last.

Identifyingasadolphin · 28/01/2023 20:23

Have 3 of their fleece “blazers” to wear around the house, great quality and smart enough if people turn up at the door unexpectedly.

Had years of wear out of their rash vests for sailing and watersports.

I do find their American colour options can be a bit strange, many of the odd shades and tones just don’t seem to work in our UK light (IMHO)

Visited outlet stores in the Galleria Hatfield and at head office. Rejected all of the odd colours in Galleria shop within 3 minutes.

Had very high hopes for the stylish water shoes for the beach, 2 pairs, both soles separated from the body completely within days - had to jump through hoops to justify getting them replaced/refunded

I have very sensitive skin, and an autistic 6'3" ds who is extremely fussy about the feel of clothes that touch his skin. We both love wearing their Supima cotton garments. The fabric is almost silky. I also like the feel of their modal garments.

Ds likes the fact that they have a tall range, and I, with my yoyoing weight, like the fact that I can get the same styles across their regular and larger ranges. And trousers in different lengths, and they have a tall range for women, which is great for my disproportionality long arms and torso.

I don't like the most of patterns and styling, but do like fabrics, the quality, the solid colours, the sizing, the t-shirts, jeans, cords and nightwear. And the long, down coats! I get so much use from them.

And the sales - never buy anything full price from them.

Lincolnforever · 28/01/2023 20:31

The pyjamas are good.

The lack of free returns really puts me off ever ordering - it's a big financial risk having to pay to return things.

trilbydoll · 28/01/2023 20:33

The kids stuff is excellent and my two are almost always in at least one item of LE clothing. Me and DH have some lovely soft tshirts that get constantly worn and washed and their swimwear is also brilliant. None of it is super stylish but I don't need to be stylish for a Saturday at home doing housework!

DontdothisDothat · 28/01/2023 20:34

Another one praising their pyjamas! I’ve also had decent cardigans from them in the past. I’m talk too - 5 ft 8. Their fit is good for my body type

purser25 · 28/01/2023 20:34

I got a long sleeved nightshirt it is a nice long length as well

AnotherPigeon · 28/01/2023 20:38

Kids clothes are great. I really like their skorts, my DD lived in them every summer.

Because they accept returns for a long time after purchase (one year?) I save up my returns and despatch several together. It costs much less that way, especially if I use their courier pick-up thing at a local shop.

superplumb · 28/01/2023 20:54

I have a knee length duvet coat in red. I get lots of compliments on it but I got it for warmth and didn't care what I looked like. Still don't but its so warm and half price last year

ivykaty44 · 28/01/2023 21:01

I purchased two pairs of trousers from them in two colours but same style - they came and one pair fitted perfect and the others I couldn't get on.... needless to say I had to send one pair back to them, but haven't purchased from them since as their sizing is a mystery

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 28/01/2023 21:25

LE cashmere is the best for high street prices IMHO. I have a cream roll neck 3ply £180 has been washed a lot as is in as good stead as my vintage ebay finds.

weebarra · 28/01/2023 21:34

I get some of my kids' clothes from there as well as their nighties. They also do mastectomy swimwear, which has pockets for my prostheses.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 28/01/2023 21:42

I recently bought their jersey PJs for £27 in the sale, they are brilliant. The bottoms are reasonably wide, lovely and long and even have pockets ! The buttons don’t pop open on the PJ top and they are generously cut.
unfortunately they are now sold out.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 28/01/2023 21:48

I like their petite dresses. Hope they get some new styles in soon as they have had the same ones in for ages.

MissMarplesbag · 28/01/2023 21:52

I think if they toned down or reduced their patterns and increased their plain colour range then more people would buy. Lands End quality is excellent so they'd do well if they dropped the mad prints & offered more block colours.

Can someone link this thread to the lands end twitter page please so they get the memo! 😁

ThatLibraryMiss · 28/01/2023 22:14

I have a squall parka that's kept me warm and dry through several years of pre-dawn winter dog walks and still looks like new after being washed. It's got plenty of generously-sized pockets too.

Their long-sleeved t-shirt style nighties are fantastic quality and their flannelette pyjamas are what good old-fashioned flannelette pyjamas should be and they also wash well. They even have pockets, big enough for a mobile phone, in the trousers. I gave a pair to my young, trendy son in law for Christmas and he liked them so much he bought some more.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2023 22:24

LE is my go-to for T-shirts and vest tops, petite sizes properly proportioned for me. Also nightwear.

DD wanted some hardwearing cotton jumpers for work, her wool ones were going through at the elbows - I got her an LE one last year and she asked for another for Xmas. She's 23 and also has some of their checked shirts.

My most-worn item is some 'water shorts' which must be about 30 years old by now - proper shorts with sensible pockets not boardies but quick drying and great for sailing. I wish they'd do those again.

I've also got a couple of short coats that I wear a lot, not 'squall' type at all. Oh, and a raincoat.

timtam23 · 28/01/2023 23:48

If you choose carefully, Land's End have some really nice stuff. It can seem quite pricey so I tend to wait for the sales or special offers. I've lived in their cotton/modal turtlenecks this winter, so soft and great as a base layer. Short sleeved cotton Tshirts for summer - I found some prints last summer which were interesting and even, dare I say it, fashionable. Sleeveless Ts with wide straps which don't slip off my shoulders. Some of the nightwear is brilliant, the brushed cotton PJs especially. Kidswear is great and I bought loads of LE kids' t-shirts when mine were younger, not so much now as they don't want the bright colours and appliqué any more but there were great choices for little boys especially, compared to all the camo and sludge colours elsewhere. The hoodies and some of the PJs are still popular with my younger teen DS. I've never had much luck buying trousers/shorts from them as the sizing just doesn't work for me but I do like the petite options for women's tops and t-shirts as the shorter length works well for me. Just remembered I have also bought some of the supima cotton polo shirts/t-shirts for DH over the years, they have always been great quality basics and wash very well.

timtam23 · 28/01/2023 23:53

Forgot to mention the patterned cotton longsleeved shirts - available in petite, regular and plus sizes. Some of the patterns/colour selections are terrible but again if you choose carefully there are some really nice ones. I used to wear them a lot for work.

DaisyDarker · 28/01/2023 23:57

I've found it to be the only, or at least the only affordable, option for a petite, properly waterproof parka. Said parka also has the best pocket options of any coat I've ever had including v sensible zipped pockets for cash and bank cards and hidden inside pockets that can fit a bottle of wine. Oh

Kids options are also really good.

Rebel2023 · 29/01/2023 00:00

I got a knee length down coat in the sale ages ago and it's fab. Incredibly warm

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 29/01/2023 21:14

Honestly their styling is OFFENSIVE!

The catalogue and the website make me recoil, but the actual clothes are really well constructed, last forever and are comfortable to wear.

DC love their winter jackets and swimsuits. I really like some of their knits and DH likes their quarter zip jumpers.

ThePoshUns · 29/01/2023 21:16

I've got a lovely duvet coat from there last year. I also like their night shirts. You have to pick and choose but the quality is good and prices not too bad.

rainydogday · 29/01/2023 21:21

I have been wearing their jeans for years! I am not over 45! I like them as they do longer leg and mid rise. Straight leg and last for ages. Also love their pjs as also good for tall people as have different lengths. I have a tankini that is great for longer length and very good quality - plain black.
