Why does toner not last in my hair?

fairysimples · 28/01/2023 08:33

Got my hair done this week - highlights with a toner.

It was a beautiful ash colour.

Just washed it with garnier ultimate blends in case that matters and it's gone yellow after one wash.

This happens every time regardless of the shampoo I use.

What am I doing wrong and/or what can I do about it?

Have you tried silver shampoo (the purple liquid) removes yellow tones.

fairysimples · 28/01/2023 08:36

I have - it still doesn't keep it the colour it is when she does it. That goes after the first wash.

Toners aren’t that long lasting really. A couple of things to try; don’t wash it for 3 days before you go and don’t use conditioner when you wash it before an appointment, leave it for 3 days after your appointment to wash at home. Use an SLS free shampoo.

fairysimples · 28/01/2023 08:53

Thanks I'll try that

Can we see what you mean by yellow op? Do you have a before and after

Campervangirl · 28/01/2023 09:02

Same here, paid £65 for trim and a toner, washed out after 2 washes.
I've been using Shrine Drops (Boots online or Superdrug in store)
They have different tones, I'm using Silver and it absolutely counteracts the yellow, you put silicone free conditioner in the bowl provided and add the drops you want, there's pictures on the side of the box but do a strand test first, I use 6 drops.
They also have ash blonde etc.
I've used different toners in the past but Shrine Drops really work, my blonde (balayage) is a lovely colour

Bold Uniq purple hair mask is the only thing that gets me back to ashy tones.

You need a better hairdresser. One who uses peroxide to get the right colour, rather than bleaching and then needing toner

All bleaching processes will involve toner.

I am wondering wether the op needs a longer bleaching or wether she is seeing yellow that isn't there.

Photos would be helpful

FlutterbButterfly · 28/01/2023 20:00

You need Fenola No Yellow hair mask 👍🏻

ladymacbeth · 28/01/2023 20:11

@Lordofthebutterfloofs exactly. Rather than overly bleaching and needing Toner to correct colour, Good hairdressers get it right first time with peroxide

And then what do you think they put on after?

ladymacbeth · 28/01/2023 20:36

Nothing, doesn't need it.

That's complete crap.

ladymacbeth · 28/01/2023 22:55

@Lordofthebutterfloofs why?! I get my hair highlighted with peroxide and never have toner put in.

I second this stuff. It is bloomin amazing!

fairysimples · 29/01/2023 06:22

I'm not going to put a picture up folks, sorry.

It happens regardless of what hairdresser I go to. My hair also doesn't hold bold colour like blue or red or purple.

I'm going to try some of these tips. Thanks!

Your hairdresser WILL be using toner as part of your colour service.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 29/01/2023 08:40

Unless your already naturally light blonde. In which case, why are you getting highlights?

@fairysimples this article also describes the different types of toner. Check what's being used.

Unless you’re rocking the yellow look or have very blonde hair to start with this is highly unlikely to be the case.

Welshy26 · 29/01/2023 08:47

Fenlola yellow shampoo is great.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 29/01/2023 08:49

Doesn't last on me either. Shrine is fab.

CleanBedding · 29/01/2023 09:02

I really like the Elvive intense purple mask.

N1Co · 29/01/2023 10:18

It doesn’t last on mine either. I get a darker, chocolate shade toner put on and it washes out almost immediately. V frustrating as I can’t then just use purple/blue shampoos as that won’t bring back any of the chocolate colour. I’ve been looking into a toner to DIY at home but haven’t found a good enough one yet.

fairysimples · 29/01/2023 10:38

My natural colour is light brown with ginger tones by the way. In case that makes a different.
