Do you think a barber will cut my hair?

I like short hair, but I can't afford a haircut every 6 weeks any more.

Do you think I can get a short back and sides at the barber? It won't be terribly different to what I used to have and it's 1/3 the price.

I've not had a haircut for 7 months and I'm about to break. I hate it. It's so flat and lifeless. Doesn't suit me. Thought I could get used to having long hair again but I don't think I can.

Said no trained barber or hairdresser ever.

Fascinating. Could you tell me the difference between giving my female hair a buzz cut and giving a man a buzz cut? Or, to take something involving scissors, a short scissors cut in the style of a slightly grown out buzz cut?

Certain barbers or hairdressers might not be trained to specific styles/cuts, but the hair in itself is just hair.

My daughter has a short back and sides. Infuriating most barbers refuse to do it.

Why the hell can men get haircuts on Sunday but we can’t? It’s the perfect day for a haircut

My hairdresser is open on Sundays so I don’t understand this. I have short hair and wouldn’t go to a barbers personally because most of them don’t have the skills of my hairdresser. That does not mean all hairdressers are more skilled - a lot of younger ones don’t have experience of technical cuts because there hasn’t been a trend for them in recent years. If you look at a chain like Blue Tit in London they charge the same for a short hair cut for either sex which is how it should be. You can but ask - what harm can it do?

I couldn’t find one that would give me a number 1 all over (I’m nearly bald but need the patches kept short or I look like a piebald pony). Tried loads but none would. In the end I just bought decent clippers. But probably harder to diy if you want it to look decent. I just need it to look properly bald!

@Precipice weight, texture, complexity.
There's a reason the two professions are trained separately.

The shorter it is, the easier it is for a barber to adapt to but the OP doesn't have, or want, a buzz cut so that's not really relevant.

Hair is not just hair.

It's the time it takes at a women's salon, and having to book in advance. Dh can look in the mirror, decide his hair looks a bit long and be guaranteed to get it cut that day even if he has to wait half an hour for his turn. I have to book something 3 or 4 weeks in advance.

Hair is not just hair.

OP doesn't want a buzzcut, but the buzzcut is a prime example of a very simple cut that can be done just as easily on a woman as on a man. It is being brought up as an example against the idea that women's hair and men's hair is substantially different to cut. In its essence as hair, assuming equivalent styles, not 'average women's cut' against the 'average men's cut'. OP does want a short back and sides, which is also a very common men's cut. Requires more skill with scissors than a buzzcut, but still something all barbers should be familiar with.

'Complexity' - sure, but it's a complexity of style, not of hair. The same goes for the training. A barber capable of doing a good short back and sides on a man can do a good short back and sides on a woman. This barber might not be able to do particular styles more common for women.

I've been getting my hair cut at barbers all my adult life and have never had a problem. I've seen other women there too.

I used to have a very short style and I always had it done at the barber’s (which incidentally was owned and entirely staffed by women) until one day I walked in and plonked myself down to be told they don’t do ladies hair any more.

When I asked why, it transpired the owner had started up a salon and wanted all the female clients to go there instead. Which would have been fine I suppose had the price been the same, but instead of the £8 I was paying my barber a dry cut in the salon started at £20. I grew my hair out instead.

I have a quiff with a fade, been having it cut by a barber for well over a year now.

As a poster said up thread, hairdressers kept trying to give me a pixie cut and charged £30/£35.

Barber charges me £13.50, takes the same amount of time!

Mylittlesandwich · 22/01/2023 21:45

I approached several local barbers who said their insurance didn't cover them to cut women's hair. I found one a little further out who I see every 4/5 weeks and does an amazing job. Much better than any hairdresser did. The fade is always immaculate.
