Do you think a barber will cut my hair?

I like short hair, but I can't afford a haircut every 6 weeks any more.

Do you think I can get a short back and sides at the barber? It won't be terribly different to what I used to have and it's 1/3 the price.

I've not had a haircut for 7 months and I'm about to break. I hate it. It's so flat and lifeless. Doesn't suit me. Thought I could get used to having long hair again but I don't think I can.

My local barber does short women's hair. It's on the "menu" of services that they provide.

ChimChimeny · 22/01/2023 07:28

My grandma used to to go to a barbers. There's loads round here so if you have as many nearby I'm sure one will do it if you ask around

Jelliez · 22/01/2023 07:29

Hair is hair!

Ifailed · 22/01/2023 07:29

Plonk yourself down in the chair, say "Short back and sides mate". Followed by "Arsenal are flying, don't know what's happened to Liverpool?".

You'll be fine. Remember to ask for something for the weekend at the end.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Depends if their insurance covers them.

Why the hell can men get haircuts on Sunday but we can’t? It’s the perfect day for a haircut.

Slimjimtobe · 22/01/2023 08:04

Work friend goes to the barber
she always look amazing

Hair is hair!

Yes, but barbering and hairdressing are different skills.

I'm guessing that if the OP hadn't had her hair cut for 7 months, then it won't be that short.

Doidontimmm · 22/01/2023 08:16

Look for a training day at a local hairdressers, lots of them struggle to get short hair models!

Racetothebottom2022 · 22/01/2023 08:23

Yes, I've grown my hair out but always used to go to the barber loved not having to make an appointment and the HUGE price difference and the result the same. I did the first time take a picture of my last hairdresser's cut straight from salon so I could show what I wanted rather than try to explain it which I know I express badly.

RandomersAssociation · 22/01/2023 08:23

Why ever not? Try a few until you find a place you feel comfortable.

Thinking about it, this new gender fascism that prescribes waist length hair for every woman unless she wants to be told she’s really a man, is probably depriving a million women and girls of the simple pleasure of going to a barber for a quick, easy cut that doesn’t cost £150 …

Pluck up your courage, @TheOtherBennetSister , it really is ok.

Hair is hair!

Said no trained barber or hairdresser ever.

rattlemehearties · 22/01/2023 08:27

Yes. I get my hair cut at a local barber (I'm a woman, very short hair with fade). I took my son to him years ago and we chatted and found out he used to be a general hairdresser before setting up solo. I asked if he'd cut mine too.

I think the best thing would be for you to ask - I've also approached a barber in the past that claimed to be strictly 'men only'.

Busybeedle · 22/01/2023 08:34

Tricky… I see barbers as a men’s space where they can feel comfortable, why shouldn’t they have that? Some barbers even have initiatives to encourage men to open up about mental health etc which maybe they wouldn’t feel comfortable doing in a mixed sex environment.

I do think the disparity in prices is ridiculous and maybe there could be a few unisex barber type set ups but otherwise I don’t think there’s anything wrong with men having their own space. So yes ask around to see if anyone is happy to do it but I do understand why some wouldn’t be.

Catnipples · 22/01/2023 08:44

Call them & ask.

I have short hair with faded sides & recently switched from my salon (£89 😱) to the barber at £19. The cut is better!

They said they have a number of female clients.

Wish I'd switched sooner!

RandomersAssociation · 22/01/2023 08:51

@Busybeedle I’ve been having my hair cut at various barbers, across England and Scotland, for decades. Never found one that refused or made me uncomfortable. A few employ female as well as male barbers but they all cut both men and women’s hair.

Besides, I have short hair. So, despite the evidence of chromosomes, menstruation and menopause, I’m quite definitively a man ... Hmm

Do you see hairdressers as a women's space, out of interest?

Whenever I go to my hairdressers (quite a fancy one) there are always several men in there.

What about women who choose to be barbers? As there's lots of male hairdressers where I go too.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 22/01/2023 09:01

There's literally about 20 barbers shops in my small town and only one cuts women's hair.
But she advertises this on her window and with prices.
I use her all the time because she's good ,cheap and I absolutely hate hanging around while hairdressers wash my hair and blow dry it ect ect 🤣
In out and happy 🤣

Just what I was going to say.
Does no harm though to ask . If not, the pp who suggested contacting the hair and beauty department of your local college is right. I used to get my hair done at mine for £5!

GettingStuffed · 22/01/2023 10:17

One in our town made the news because they wouldn't cut a woman's hair and she accused them of being sexist. They still only do men's hair.

QueueEtwo · 22/01/2023 10:20

Just tell the barber you are actually a man! 🤷‍♀️

catsonahottinroof · 22/01/2023 10:29

My eldest has short hair and often goes to the barbers but not all will do women - look for ones that have women working in them as they are normally more relaxed. There was a thread on here saying it was about insurance and some tried to say men and women have different hair which I find difficult to believe.

Oakbeam · 22/01/2023 13:36

One in my home town refused to cut my sister’s hair.

it was about 40 years ago though.

AugustRose · 22/01/2023 13:41

Just ask. My two daughters use barbers all the time because they prefer the way they do short cuts. My older one hates that short cuts in local hairdressers all become pixie cuts because it's not what she wants. The owner of the one my 15 yr old uses doesn't like cutting longer hair but will do it one occassion.
