Thoughts on this dress for work?

Corporate city role, bought a couple of dresses for work before Christmas.
One white, one red. I've worn the white one lots but I've not worn the red one yet (which maybe tells its own story) So now I'm doubting myself. (It's high summer where I live)

Thoughts?

The watch the BBC show The Split- will give you a good idea of laywer corporate London.

Mydogatemypurse · 19/01/2023 22:29

Id wear them for night out

WonderingWanda · 19/01/2023 22:31

I think the red one with a jacket in the UK. Although I don't work in a corporate environment.

Great idea!

The white and the playsuit are far, far, far too short for any industry (bar fashion, I suppose).

The black going for drinks dress is soooo short and revealing. I'm not ageist in any way- you rock what you like- but it's the kind of thing my 20 Yr old niece would wear out. She'd also wear the playsuit. She is 5 11 and has legs to die for, mind ( I don't have those genes!).

Whatwhatwhatnow · 19/01/2023 22:32

I'd wear the red no problem.

I'd never wear the white one to the office. Way too short.

WonderingWanda · 19/01/2023 22:35

The other thing is that both outfits will be far too cold for about 70%of the year in the UK. You will need boots for all the rain and jumpers and wool tights to keep you warm.

olympicsrock · 19/01/2023 22:35

The green Reiss dress is lovely though and would be fine due to the longer length and high neck.

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 22:37

@AngelinaFibres - what do 42 year olds wear then?!

I'm going to watch the split, thank you! I'd wear that blue dress on the right. Australian fashion is very bright and short, it's definitely more 'fun' - I wear short things all the time and it's pretty standard across lots of industries. The brand Cue is one of the core corporate brands here, go to any large meeting at there is often at least one Cue dress around the table.

White is too short for London

Red is ok but with a blazer or smart cardigan

I wear lots of sleeveless dresses for work (menopause!) but with black tights in winter plus always have a light jacket or cardigan

As long as they are high V/round/boat neck and no cleavage then shoulders and legs from knee down are fine

TheFrozenCanal · 19/01/2023 22:38

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 21:47

See that's so interesting, I would never wear the red one as evening wear! Far too corporate! I'd feel like a bit of a twat out for drinks in that!
I'd probably wear something more like this out for drinks

ajeworld.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/products/seraphina-swing-mini-dress-black

This is a nighty to me.

I've worked in City corporate in the UK and none of these dresses are really suitable. You can wear sleeveless but with a shirt underneath, but I don't think that would work with those.

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 22:38

Forgot to add the pic. Would also wear the white jacket, but not with the shirt.

Fuck me that white one is short! You must have killer legs :) If you're talking corporate consulting role like Accenture, Deloitte etc then no way would that work. The red one with a jacket would be ok. The playsuit absolutely not! When I worked for Accenture in the city (which was 14 years ago though...) directors wore skirt/trousers suits, or if not then shortest skirt would be on the knee, no cleavage on show and tops typically not sleeveless, although with a jacket would be ok.

Irishfarmer · 19/01/2023 22:38

The green one is lovely and I think would be fine in an Irish office, long time since I worked in a London one. The first two you posted look too much like going out dresses to me, and sorry I don't like the red one at all something odd about it.

The black one you said you'd wear out for drinks has no shape. I have seen a few Aussie people I follow wearing things like that and I don't think they really suit anyone. I found when I moved home from AU that fashion was a bit different.

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/01/2023 22:39

I’m in a corporate environment, senior role, in Scotland. Would defo wear the red and green dresses - with jackets though, it’s cold here, lol. White one is too casual/short for most workplaces here I think. I love the play suit and have something similar but for (warm!) evenings out, defo not work.

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 22:39

For context .... I'd wear the black one out for drinks / dinner! I'm not suggesting I'd wear that to work !!!!

For a site that preaches about how "we should be able to do what we want as women, wear what we want as women. Be independent. If somebody has an issue with us that's their problem"...this clearly doesn't apply when someone talks about fashion. Absolutely baffling.

NO you are not TOO OLD to wear them. Ignore that rude poster.

The red one is not too revealing. There's no bloody rule about sleeveless dresses in the UK. Is it now offensive for a woman to show her shoulders? For fucks sake!

My company makes all men wear ties, which is just so archaic in my opinion. As a woman I obviously don't have to but they expect me to dress smartly, I don't work in a corporate environment, I don't meet clients, I'm not seen so I tend to wear what makes me feel comfortable, I work in a very practical job so comfort is priority for me!

The only industry I know that still dresses smartly is the finance/banking industry over in Canary Wharf. One of my friend's goes into her high-powered Director job wearing dungarees! London workwear is pretty laid-back.

Ignore the out of touch posters on here clutching their pearls at a dress above the knee or god forbid...a woman's arms!!!

Sleepwalkingintothewall · 19/01/2023 22:41

White one would be covered in coffee by 9:15 for me

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 22:41

Do I need to buy a cardigan? What is a smart cardigan 🤣

I’m corp in London. I’m not lying when I say if any woman fronted up in that white one other than a teenage clueless work experience person they’d immediately kill their career.

im struggling to believe you front up for a corp role like that in your 40s.

the green one is lovely and I’d wear that.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 19/01/2023 22:45

AngelinaFibres · 19/01/2023 22:17

Sorry Op but at 42 you are far too old to be wearing the dresses you are posting.

Get in the bin!! Men and women can wear whatever they want at whatever the age. You might not want to and that’s okay.

Many smart cardigans. And thermals to go under the dress that the cardigan goes over. Then, for three weeks of the year, you'll swelter in it.

Just something black and tailored - less formal/uncomfortable than a jacket that works with loads of dresses

Love the green dress - that would work

I have not worn separates to work for over 20 years - honestly cannot be arsed to match tops and bottoms

Just dress dresses up or down with shoes/accessories/jacket etc.

Aye in a perfect world lol, sure you can dress like an oversexed teen to a senior corp role in your 40s . In the real world. Can you fuck.

Katrinawaves · 19/01/2023 22:50

I think the women in The Split dressed quite frumpily and as the OP has a more glamorous bent she can get away with more. I loved the green Reiss dress she linked to.

Most of the outfits in Suits or The Good Wife would also work in London corporate roles and have a bit more oomph than The Split

TheLette · 19/01/2023 22:53

Are many workplaces still formal in terms of work wear? I work in a city law firm and everyone is so casual these days (which I find really difficult to manage - I can do casual or formal but in between is quite hard). However my clients are not in formal industries so it's partly due to that. Frankly if I wore jeans no one would care.

To the OP, regardless of how smart you need to be, I would say that we are quite little "c" conservative when it comes to office wear. Women don't generally wear anything too short / tight / low cut. Even open toe sandals I wouldn't wear at work except on extremely hot days of the year (when exceptions are generally made), and never flip flops. I think sleeveless is fine, in summer, but not anything more revealing like strappy tops, strapless or anything showing cleavage or back.
