Thoughts on this dress for work?

Corporate city role, bought a couple of dresses for work before Christmas.
One white, one red. I've worn the white one lots but I've not worn the red one yet (which maybe tells its own story) So now I'm doubting myself. (It's high summer where I live)

Thoughts?

The white one looks too short to me and suitable for a younger woman. Can't say I like the red one at all - actually think it's too long. But it looks more formal.

As for the black - too floaty and short. As someone said, like a negligee, not for public wear.

This is UK corporate style dress if you don’t want to give the wrong vibes

Part of the reason I'm asking is I've spent my full professional career overseas and will need to start working in London. Can anyone give me examples of what is acceptable?

Can you say which sector you're in and if possible, the firm you will be working for?

How senior are you and what image do you want to project?

The white dress in particular is very casual

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/01/2023 22:00

I’m not in a particularly corporate job but neither of those dresses would be suitable in my workplace as they are. Maybe the red with a jacket?

I have several dresses from here for work (senior lawyer working in London) but I’m a bit older than you so these may not be your style at all!

I work in consulting, as a director. See I've looked at Hobbs before and honestly it's just SO frumpy for me. There isn't a single dress I'd wear!

Mumsnet is awful
for fashion advice , they’ll tell you to shop in Hobbs 😂

love both dresses and would be perfectly acceptable in my line of work (marketing, advertising, agency!)

oviraptor21 · 19/01/2023 22:03

The white one, no way.
The red one, in London, with a jacket except in the height of summer, would be acceptable in most roles.

MissMarplesbag · 19/01/2023 22:06

My favourite places for work wear are:
COS
ARKET
MANGO
John Lewis Kin
M&S
Reiss
Finery

I mix and match semi casual pieces with a smart jacket, I don't work in corporate so I can get away with most things.

Krakenes · 19/01/2023 22:08

Those two dresses look very dated, especially if you’re going to be working in London. It’s a bit of a ‘2012 Apprentice’ look.

Definitely don’t go to Hobbs! Do you prefer trousers/skirts/dresses?

MarmiteCoriander · 19/01/2023 22:08

I agree- the white one is FAR too short and casual for the UK. The red is better, although I agree it looks a tad long and sleeveless is not common here. I worked in Sydney for many years before moving to London, and things there are far more relaxed. Generally corporate dressing in the UK is still more formal. I think its down to the weather too and needing more structured, warmer clothing and not sleeveless/short/light clothing to keep cool.

Oblomov22 · 19/01/2023 22:09

You are seriously in for a shock op, re how conservative the uk corporate is.

I agree with you about Hobbs being frumpy. It's awful.

Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers · 19/01/2023 22:14

I wouldn't wear the white one to work, I would wear the red one but only on a day I was needing to look smart/dressed up. Most days I wear smart casual - black or dark blue jeans with clean white trainers and a shirt or T-shirt and blazer. Or a floaty dress with trainers.

Im in a senior position, not in consulting but a lot of my colleagues are

Hop27 · 19/01/2023 22:15

I'd wear this .....

I know the white one isn't suitable for London! It's perfect for here and get lots of compliments wearing it.

For context, I often wear this for work

Sorry Op but at 42 you are far too old to be wearing the dresses you are posting.

Katrinawaves · 19/01/2023 22:17

Hmm. You don’t see many professional women in that play suit in London offices. 🤣

Milany · 19/01/2023 22:20

@AngelinaFibres don't be so daft.

melmos · 19/01/2023 22:20

We do smart casu nowal but when we were smarter pre COVID tailored dress high neck longs short sleeves plus jacket and heels not opened toed or trouser suit with trainers or loafers is the board comprised of old men.

Your body shape makes difference however if you are completely flat you can wear something lower cut but the lighting is so hideous in UK offices if you aren't underweight and tanned you want to be covered up. And don't forget perfume and gum as the AC makes everyone smell

Buffypaws · 19/01/2023 22:21

Wear what you like. I work for a law firm and my assistant comes to the office in a crop top.

Milany · 19/01/2023 22:22

OP that green one is lovely and very professional looking. You might need to wear a jacket with it in some environments though.

That super short black is a definate nope.

The Reiss dress is gorgeous. I think that's perfect.

The jumpsuit ...! I can't imagine anyone I know wearing that to work BUT it's obviously different in a very warm climate!

Why?

in case judgemental idiots don’t like women wearing clothes they like ?

olympicsrock · 19/01/2023 22:23

Wow , you are in for a shock. UK corporate wear is far more formal with less flesh on show. As a rule, necklines not too low, no sleeveless and touching the knee or lower when you stand so that there is not much thigh on show when you sit down.
Very bright colours are also not common - think black navy , dark green, perhaps a splash of colour

Yarrawonga · 19/01/2023 22:25

I don’t work in a corporate environment but if it were me, I’d wear the white one. I’d reserve judgement on the playsuit until I’d tried it on.

Mid length doesn’t suit me and the black dress is awful.
