Le mer eye cream - talk me down please

PeanutJellyAndButter · 18/01/2023 23:20

I currently have a pot of Le Mer eye cream in my basket. This is hugely expensive.

I need you all to talk me down. It’s not going to change my puffy eyes and dark circles.

I have generally good skin and no wrinkles for 40ish. I don’t like wearing make up and concealer under my eyes makes me look older, so do like good skincare.

I really want to get it. I’m sure I will look fresh and young again if I use it.

I’m just so tired after the holidays and feel so grey and lacklustre.

A haircut will be cheaper and probably make me look better.

should I just buy it???

Apparently there's no difference between eye creams and moisturisers

Depends if there is spf in your moisturiser

Don’t. None of it works. None of it. And I’m sorry but I laughed a bit at ‘medical grade serum’. Of all the nonsense!

Why is it nonsense?

After trying numerous different face creams and my skin not being great, I managed to get hold of a sample size CDLM. I told myself I absolutely wouldn’t be buying it as I too thought it was overpriced and over hyped. The difference it made to my skin happened overnight. Even my partner commented (unprompted). Nothing else has ever come close. I sometimes try cheaper brands, but always end up going back to La Mer.

I do have the eye cream too, but I get it as smaller pots which are often given away free on special offers. The La Mer website often does little gift sets free when you spend a certain amount. I do like the eye cream. I’m not convinced it’s loads better than other eye creams I’ve tried but it is nice. I’ve had numerous eye creams over the years (normally as sample sizes from Space NK/Liberty gifts and advent calendars etc). I have to say that the expensive ones do tend to have more of an effect.

One eye cream I loved which I got in a beauty box was the Revive eye serum. I honestly assumed it was cheap and thought I’d found a bargain alternative - on googling, I discovered it’s £225!

I think everyone’s skin is different. I know some people don’t like CDLM. I love it. Worth every penny in my opinion!

I'm 50, OP.
If there's one thing I swear by (and I have lots of lines that have really softened because of this), it's jade rolling and gua sha.
I use Frances Prescott tri-balm (just a bit) with the roller to wake up skin and get it all lovely and healthy looking. I also use a warming eye pillow and lie on the sofa or in the bath and just meditate or listen to a Shavasana on Spotify. This has been transformative for me in the past couple of years.

I also find Clarins Super Restorative day and/or night cream has made a visible difference to my skin's radiance. I'm pretty basic and stick with LaRoche Posay cicaplast on my face in winter, but the Clarins kicks in that healthy look that winter steals from my menopausal skin/face.

I did use La Mer for a few months in my 40s. About 5 or 6 years ago. And I got loads of comments from people. I have to admit, people really commented on how great my skin looked.
I myself couldn't see it but I could feel it. My skin felt amazing.

I've never gotten on with Astral/Nivea blue pot on my face. Both are just so strong for my facial skin (I love Nivea blue on my body and use it every day... Astral just stinks. Way too Old Lady Wearing a Mothball Coat for me- sorry to be ageist, but it's true. Awful smell). I've tried every L'oreal cream. I think L'oreal and Nivea facial products just irritate me. They always have- since my 20s. I do infrequently give them a chance because we are not static and I always hope that my facial skin will one day accept those brands (because they're fairly decent and affordable AND work really well for so many people). But I just can't get on with them.

Try Clarins (the red one- night or day... you don't have to splurge on both), would be my suggestion. Or ask for a sample in your local pharmacy or Boots. Also, take an omega 3 daily tablet and a probiotic tablet. Look at how you're eating... in our 40s and into our 50s, I think the focus on a low alcohol/anti-inflammatory diet is essential. It really is a time in our lives when we see that the way in which we treat our inside (mind and body) makes a difference to our external appearance.

For that money, id get myself some baby-botox for a freshened up look and a pot of aldi lacura rejuvelate cream which is £2 and bloody brilliant.

PeanutJellyAndButter · 19/01/2023 10:08

Haha you guys are all brilliant!

I am a little sad that I won’t be buying super fancy eye cream this time.

But, I did get some caffeine eye serum from the ordinary. I will try some of the other recommendations too.

Will also look at concealer.

And maybe next time I’ll not ask on here and a tiny expensive little pot of magic cream will be mine 😂

I think everyone thinking CDLM is great needs to read the Daily Mail article, comparing it to Nivea blue. It's a great read.

MorrisZapp · 19/01/2023 10:38

I'm the idiot who bought Strivectin neck cream. It's no better than any other cream and now I'm using up the big pot like a penance for my weakness.

MorrisZapp · 19/01/2023 10:41

What is CDLM please? Google giving me various defence departments.

MorrisZapp · 19/01/2023 10:41

Oh right just creme de la mer, I get it.

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 19/01/2023 10:48

No, it's overpriced nonsense. The man who invented it suggested people eat it to gain the full seaweedy benefits. You can get a really rich eyecream for a lot less.

Yes this is why I use Nivea blue pot. I did use it before the comparison to be fair, because my grandma used it and she had astonishing skin.

Metabigot · 19/01/2023 11:04

If its a dark circle issue I'd save up for tear trough fillers.

Happy to be proved wrong but I'm not sure any eye cream can help dark circles

I agree. Cream can help add moisture and plump up lines etc but I don't think it can really help with dark circles.

DP knows dermatologists through work. They are mystified about why anyone would use anything other than E45 or any basic cream. They say it’s all the same.

Oh god are there any neck creams that actually work 😭have a massively crepey neck, like an empty double chin and the skin wrinkles so much - am googling surgery to fix it

That's good to know
I generally buy cheap and cheerful and then I wonder if that's a mistake

my late father used Nivea and his skin was good at 79!

I’ve read that article before. Everyone’s skin is different! For my skin, the Nivea was awful. It went in the bin. It’s got different ingredients in so will suit some and not others. The same as CDLM - not everyone will get on with it. Some people rave about the Augustina Bader rich cream. It did absolutely nothing to my skin.

I understand what you're saying, but I think the point is that the price doesn't reflect the quality. My all time favourite cream is Nuxe facial balm and the eyecream in the pink pump tube. They do not irritate my skin, but I'll also admit they feel luxurious to use, if I was completely honest my skin is just as good with Nivea, the only drawback is that some foundations do not go on so well after but my lancome one does so it's all good.
