Dry hair..olaplex is making it worse?

Iwonder08 · 16/01/2023 12:35

It is entirely possible it is all a coincidence but.. It feels like my hair got so much worse since I started olaplex. I did a couple of salon treatments, at home I am doing N8 once a week + olaplex oil. My hair is soo dry and breaking. How is it possible?
Hair is very fine but there are a lot of them. Coloured by a hair dresser from dark blonde to 2 shades lighter blonde. No bleach. 2 c curls, very frizzy . They were always on a dry side and my hairdresser strongly recommended olaplex and it feels it is now worse than before. Is it some sort of purge before it gets better?
I would love any hair product recommendations for a very dry hair. Happy to throw money on it

My hairdresser actually warned me against olaplex for this very reason!

Rachaelrachael · 16/01/2023 12:39

Google olaplex damage/reviews, there's so many people whose hair has started falling out and snapping since using olaplex! I read that the formula we can buy us different to what the hairdressers use, but I'm not sure if that's true. Either way, it's put me off using mine.

Mercurial123 · 16/01/2023 12:39

Maybe it doesn't suit your hair? I'm finding the same with K18. Started out great, but it's made my hair dry despite the positive reviews. I've followed the instructions correctly, so it's not the application.

I've just bought the Living Proof Triple Bond Complex. If that doesn't work, I'll go back to Olaplex 3.

MandaLynn · 16/01/2023 13:03

Olaplex is a protein treatment- it could be you have too much protein and need to focus on deep moisture

Iwonder08 · 16/01/2023 13:43

@MandaLynn this is exactly that! I fit 'too much protein' description. I would appreciate any recommendations for extra powerful moisturising treatments

No experience of oplex but I love this hair mask.

asphaltl · 16/01/2023 13:52

Olaplex 3 isn't a protein treatment is it? Which one are you referring to @MandaLynn

I'm genuinely puzzled by the posts about damage from people. Some say the colour has been stripped from their hair, others bald patches, psoriasis type patches and breakage from root. Would that be caused by protein or something else?

Asking out of interest as I've started using Olaplex 3 and it's made my (dry) hair softer and shiny. I used to use 8, but didn't think it was any better than standard conditioner.

thisplaceisweird · 16/01/2023 13:55

Try the brand Kerastase. They have ranges both for curly hair and for repair. I've always found it to be great on my hair.

So did mine. It doesn't suit my hair at all.

bagheera92 · 16/01/2023 15:23

Keratese is amazing and also redken I think it's called . All its products for damaged hair come in a blue bottle

Iwonder08 · 16/01/2023 19:17

Thank you, I will look up all the suggestions

I have dry, frizzy, curly, hair, have tried LOADS of products and NOTHING helps. However, I tried Give Me Cosmetics Hair Mask for the first time yesterday as it's on offer and I'd heard good things. My hair feels so soft today with minimal frizz. I really feel like it's rehydrated my Worzel Gummage-like hair.

Fancyateapottea · 16/01/2023 19:58

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is by far the best conditioning treatment I’ve found. You use it as a pre-wash treatment rather than at the conditioner stage and it makes my hair feel so much softer.

UhhhhhhhOK · 16/01/2023 20:03

There’s a guy I came across on YouTube who gave quite an in-depth discussion about olaplex and suitability.

he went through the range

SirenSays · 16/01/2023 20:04

I have to be so careful with protein. It sucks all the life out of my hair and makes it so dry and brittle.

Thesealsknowsheismagic · 16/01/2023 20:05

I love olaplex 3 and 6. But I noticed if I used the shampoo and conditioner too much that it’s dries my hair out.

I didn’t buy the shampoo and conditioner again. It worked best for me when I alternate. Used the oplaplex shampoo and conditioner every other wash.

I don’t think all the products suit all hair. Olaplex 8 is an intensive treatment, isn’t it? So it may not suit you hair to use all the time.

I can’t see it being the oil.

Phillip Kingsley Elasticizer worked best for me.

Frogdinner · 16/01/2023 20:54

When I first used olaplex shampoo and conditioner, I thought I'd found THE best product for my hair. But it's made my hair dehydrated and frizzy, lacking in shine.

I'm using L'Oréal vitamino (pink bottle) shampoo and alternating the vitamino conditioner and mask to get the condition back...plus had 3 inches chopped off. It's still not great but getting there.

Also elasticizer is just fabulous, I wish I wasn't so lazy about using it!

3points · 16/01/2023 22:13

Olaplex wasn't good for my hair. I love Philip Kingsley Elastilizer though

BlusyTusday · 17/01/2023 17:51

Another vote here for Philip Kingsley Elasticizer. My hair has dry, frizzy, fragile ends and I get much better results with that than I ever do with Olaplex.

Onnabugeisha · 17/01/2023 17:56

African black soap is great for curly hair. It’s also all natural ingredients so no silicones like olaplex.

I love this guy!!!

I've only recently found his channel but I have bleached hair that has been through a lot (kept flip flopping between loving the blonde by dying darker because of the roots) and his super down to earth, no specific product endorsing "trinity" routine is seriously helping my hair already.

I'm scared to try olaplex though I think it may be suitable for me due to the bleached hair - will watch that video now.

OP - there is a Tigi Bedhead product that is supposed to be a good protein mask because it only adds protein where needed, and if your hair doesn't need it it just washed out (apparently). I haven't tried it myself but it sounds promising.

Argan oil is really good for moisturising hair too. Condition your hair, then use leave in conditioner, then coat the ends in a nice hair oil. My hair is damaged af but feels so different since doing this. I think you may find the most difference from using the leave in product as my hair feels great while conditioning but then when it's been washed out and dried it still feels desert dry. Adding a conditioner instead of styling products has really helped.

Frogdinner · 17/01/2023 22:24

@CandlelightGlow would you recommend a particular leave-in conditioner?

Bobshhh · 17/01/2023 22:31

Olaplex has been a miracle cure on my bleach damaged hair. I use 6 and 3 and alternate with the Davines brand shampoo.

This has intrigued me though too, I'll buy some at some point.

I used Olaplex but overdone it so it demaged the hair in the end but initial results were like a miracle. Perhaps Im too greedy 😔

ive used it for a few weeks now. Not noticed any difference at all to my hair.

olaplex should only be used once a month. Everyone seems to slapping it on and over proteining their hair
