I’ve tried Redken, Olaplex, Davines (from my hairdressers), Philip Kingsley and my hair which is straight is still like straw. I don’t dye it and am washing, conditioning and blow drying every 3 days and use a heat protectant, a leave in conditioner and olaplex oil. I’m in my 60s, take HRT, Vitamin D, B complex and zinc, Im not anaemic but just have crap hair. It’s always been thin, dry and fine but as I get older it’s just getting even dryer. I’ve only got random grey hairs which have a life of their own. Any recommendations for a shampoo and conditioner that might help get some more moisture into it?

Not sure if it’s still available but Fibrology by L’Oréal was pretty good.

UpUpAndAwol · 09/01/2023 23:46

Sounds like you might have low porosity hair (me too) and the protein in those hair products is causing the brittleness. Try protein free shampoo/conditioner. Can recommend Maui hibiscus. This fixed my dry hair issue!

'New' shampoo bar from lush

MyCreation · 10/01/2023 01:05

Thank you. I’ll check these out. Definitely protein products seem to be making the dryness worse.

I've found the plantur 39 shampoos and conditioners to be amazing, hairdresser complimented my hair which tends towards dry. You can get them from boots and they aren't too expensive.

noooope · 10/01/2023 06:22

It's a bit expensive but the L'occitane almond shampoo and conditioner is quite good. I got some to try after reading about it on mn and not sure how I'm going to fund future bottles but it's amazing. I have dye on my hair with balayage so it's helped soften it and gives a lovely shine and volume. It also smells great.

Fedupofdiets · 10/01/2023 07:03

I can't help with shampoo and conditioner recommendations but I sympathise with you as my hair is the same. Last year it started breaking off badly, looking back it was because I was washing it every day and using heat (but I had done that for many many years anyway and suddenly it deteriorated). I have not been able to have it coloured for over a year and it was awful, made me feel such a mess. I now have it but into a short graduated bob and religiously have it trimmed every 5 weeks, only now has it turned a corner and is looking so much better - even my colleagues have commented on its shine! Are you having regular trims and is it cut into the best length for its condition?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/01/2023 07:06

L'Occitane repar & protect.

agutrew · 10/01/2023 07:12

I have similar hair and I use Kevin Murphy Angel Wash and Angel rinse in pink bottle. It is expensive but definitely worth it.

stormywaves · 10/01/2023 07:26

L'occitane Almond is good, also recommend the Aveda damage remedy or Nutriplenish range.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 10/01/2023 07:36

Do you eat oily fish? That might help with hair (and also good for heart health)

Fancyateapottea · 10/01/2023 12:49

Are you using the right range for your hair? I use redken all soft which works really well for my hair and is the best I’ve tried out of many. When you say Philip Kingsley, have you tried the Elasticizer treatment? I’ve found that makes a big difference to the elasticity of my hair

MyCreation · 10/01/2023 12:58

Fedupofdiets. Mine is in a graduated bob too. It used to be longer and layered but I realised it just wasn’t going to work anymore and it’s now just above collar bone length. I do have regular trims.

it’s the Redken all soft I’m just getting to the end of fancyateapottea. It’s still dry as a bone though. I suspect I’m clutching at straws hoping any shampoo and conditioner can sort it out but I thought I’d dry yet another. The very worst I tried was the olaplex shampoo and conditioner. My hair was like a haystack. One thing I’ve not tried is the Elasticizer.

You could try a clear gloss. It's a salon treatment that fills in the cuticle of the hair so it's smoother.

MyCreation · 10/01/2023 14:03

NHSMummy84. That sounds interesting. It's not something I've heard of. I will Google gloss treatment. Thanks

My hair is similar, and I'm a similar age – the best thing I've found is using a silk pillowcase!

I find OlaPlex is good too, but only if I use the whole range – twice a week I use the three elements of the deep conditioner, plus the shampoo daily - only a tiny tiny bit.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 10/01/2023 14:06

Oh, and I tried Elasticiser, and that didn't do any good. But it smelled gorgeous.

Bairnsmum05 · 10/01/2023 14:09

My hairdresser and other hairdressers I follow on social media recommend k18.

ichifanny · 10/01/2023 17:36

I have similar hair that was snapping off with too much protein and looked dull and dry and used Hair Syrup they have website but got it from beauty bay , it’s a pre wash treatment you leave on for an hour or so added a lot of moisture and left hair supple and shiny . I have blonde hair that’s so hard to get to shine .

Not sure if it’s still available but Fibrology by L’Oréal was pretty good.

I second this. When I started meno my hair fell out in handfuls and was very thin. MN suggested Fibrology and it helped a lot. I think you can still buy it online if it's not in the high street.

Do you take an iron supplement like Feroglobin capsules? Also, L-tyrosine can hekp with nair and nails, as can eating a few brazil nuts every day if you like them.

MyCreation · 10/01/2023 18:22

Thanks everyone. I’ve been looking at home gloss treatments and also like the sound of the Hair Syrup so I’m going to look at the info about that too. I do take an iron complex. My hair was the best condition it has ever been over lockdown when I started using olaplex 0 & 3 and the oil . Then I had layers cut in and bought a Revlon one step brush which I loved but even though I had it on the cool setting which is used to just set the hair after styling it on either setting 1 or 2, it turned into a strawy mess of split ends. I’m gradually growing out the disaster and stopped using the Revlon brush so hopefully if I keep getting trims and can find some treatment to make it look better (now the olaplex doesn’t seem to help any more for some reason), it will at least get back to its usual thin, fine and normally dry state.

Try the L'Oréal wonder water - it is great! Definitely worth a try x

figmaofmyimagination · 10/01/2023 20:09

Another vote for L’oreal Wonder Water, it’s magic!

Dontknownow86 · 10/01/2023 20:14

Kerestase bain de force was the only thing that helped my hair when I obliterated it with bleach.

MyCreation · 10/01/2023 23:45

DontKnownow86. I’ve just ordered the shampoo and conditioner. I hope it helps me as much as it did you.
