Are hunter wellies worth it?

Every day I do nursery runs and time at the park, all weathers. My son loves mud and puddles. I had barbour wellies but they have started leaking and ripped. I'd prefer the shorter boot style ones rather than up past calf ones. Want some that will be good quality and sturdy.

Are Hunter worth it? Any indie brands do great ones?

I have Tretorn ones, very comfortable. I did get years of wear out of my Ilse Jacobsen ones, they had a wool felt lining and ankle section, so they were nice and warm, although a little bit narrow on my wide feet.
Dd has Muckboots which I often borrow and they are warm and sturdy.

Another vote for Aigle! Mine are about 10 years old, no signs of wear at all and I've used them regularly for dog walking over that time. Just bought DH some Aigles for Christmas after his Hunters split after 5 months. They are still made in France and the quality looks 100 times better than Hunters. Friend has some Le Chameau and they are very similar to DH's Aigles, so probably similar in terms of how they'll wear.

Well I’ve had mine for 8 years with no issues at all. My children have them every year, again no issues. my nephew is currently wearing ones we bought my eldest son in 2018 and they’re still going strong after been worn by 3 children over the last 4 years.

I still have made in Scotland hunters. When they moved production the quality tanked and would not touch them with a barge pole. Le Chameau neoprene are fantastic and so comfortable - I wear mine everyday in winter for dog walking and can walk for miles in them. Too hot for autumn and spring though so wear the LC jersey ones then. Not cheap but last brilliantly. I just hope they don’t cut corners with quality in the future!

I love my Aigle wellies - great quality and neoprene lined so keep feet toasty

I got a pair of the Merry People ones for Christmas and they are comfortable for walking and light gardening. I also had Tretorn on my wish list

Maiyakat · 09/01/2023 19:05

I love my Warm Wellies. It's a small family business, really good quality, you only get a choice of two colours but they're cheaper than the main brands www.warmwellies.co.uk/

Riverlee · 09/01/2023 19:09

My she got some Barbour wellies and love them.

Was thinking of getting some Hunter wellies, but may avoid them now.

louderthan · 09/01/2023 19:24

No. I had a pair in the 90s that I lived in as a horse-mad teenager and they lasted years.
Got some as an adult and they are shite. Cold, hard and uncomfortable.
I second the Le Chameau recommendation, although they are expensive.
Agile and Ariat are good too, basically any horsey brand is going to be very hard wearing.
My current yard boots are from Decathlon, same style as Le Chameau with the adjustable straps but they were only about £45 rather than over £100. Have only had them a couple of months but they're great so far.

Probably not a popular opinion, but I think anything with a designer brand name in the form of wellies isn't great! I have got these and they are the best ones I have had for about five years! I was replacing a very very old pair of hunters and had a similar experience to others! As mine are purely for dog walking. I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds but these are warm comfy and very sturdy and very cheap!

@Iamclearlyamug a bit like a Mulberry bag! They used to be amazing back in the day... the quality was amazing. Now they churn them out at a factory and whack a hefty price tag on them.

GoneToday · 09/01/2023 19:37

Le Chameau are worlds apart. Last for years and years and so comfy.
I wear mine every day October-April in challenging mud and they are brilliant.
They were £150 5 years ago and worth every penny.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 09/01/2023 19:39

Mine are very heavy.

Orangesare · 09/01/2023 19:44

I have rockfish wellies and generally a pair lasts a year. Wellies are the footwear my feet spend most of their time in and I walk miles in them a few times a week.
Joules wellies are good and comfortable but only worth buying in the sale as they only withstand 3 months hard wear. My mother who has normal wear of wellies get a couple of years out of a joules pair.

Happyhappyeveryday · 09/01/2023 19:46

IME, no. The upper of mine cracked after just a couple of years. Most disappointing.

Rebel2023 · 09/01/2023 19:47

I'm clinging on to my old hunter ones - got them 22 years ago and they're perfect still!

ThePreacherLikesTheCold · 09/01/2023 19:47

Honestly, no. Recently bought some wellies from sainsbury's and they are just as good.

sometimes12387 · 09/01/2023 19:50

Total rubbish. I wear a wellies for walking the dog, hunters were always my go to but my last pair only lasted 12 months!!

I paid a lot for a pair of Le Chameau, but I didn't think the cost justified what I received in the post. They felt flimsy and were large around the calf.

I now opted for a pair of joules on sale. They seem to be doing the job so far.

KirstenBlest · 09/01/2023 20:03

No. Aigle or Le Chameau are much better.

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 09/01/2023 20:28

These are in same. I prefer black but trying to decide if it's worth £80 vs £55. I could maybe cope with green haha. Absolutely not pink.

I loved my Joules ones for comfort but they're not really sturdy enough for horses and farming.
