Are hunter wellies worth it?

Every day I do nursery runs and time at the park, all weathers. My son loves mud and puddles. I had barbour wellies but they have started leaking and ripped. I'd prefer the shorter boot style ones rather than up past calf ones. Want some that will be good quality and sturdy.

Are Hunter worth it? Any indie brands do great ones?

Hunters are utterly shite these days

15 odd years ago they were brilliant, they were made in Scotland and latest years and years and years.

Then Kate moss wore them to Glastonbury one year and they became hugely popular overnight - as a fashion accessory. Hunter shipped their manufacturing to China and since then they barely last 6 months.

I used to work in a country store and a lady bought a pair having had her last pair 12 years. 4 WEEKS later she brought them back as they leaked. Hunters response? "Well they're fashion wellies what do you expect?"

Never recommended them again. Try Le Chemeau if you want really good quality, not cheap though

serenghetti2011 · 09/01/2023 16:42

I have muck boots comfy and last ages I found hunters smell and were hard and uncomfy I gave them away

Brokendaughter · 09/01/2023 16:43

Only the old ones.

My old Hunters are still going strong.
The new ones are poor quality & rubbish.

Bobbins36 · 09/01/2023 16:46

Rubbish now made in China, quality used to be great. Try aigle parcour wellies if you want to spend on quality that will last years.

Definitely try Le Chameau instead, I love mine!

powershowerforanhour · 09/01/2023 16:47

What mug said, they are crap quality, the soles wear (dangerously) smooth really quickly and they split and leak.
Le Chameau are the business, not sure if they do shorter styles. I got mine second hand on ebay to keep the cost down.

I got H to buy me a pair of Rockfish wellies. They’re insulated and will keep your feet warm up to -25c

Cost about £115, free socks and are awesome

Workerbeep · 09/01/2023 16:48

I would recommend aigel wellies. Expensive but last ages and lots of options.

TheDogsMother · 09/01/2023 16:48

Old ones yes, current ones no. I had to send two pairs back when they split after six months. I think they are more of a 'fashion/festival' item now. Barbours are a bit better but I've stopped spending that much money on wellies now. I bought some Dunlops at a market for £14 and they are doing well !

HoneyDragon · 09/01/2023 16:50

My Balmorals lasted me twenty years, they’re replacements did 9 months so big change in quality.
For the sort of trips you’re wanting footwear for I live in my Dublin River Boots. I only use wellies for gardening now.

Lavender2021 · 09/01/2023 16:51

Hunter Wellington are pretty rubbish quality now but they do have a year's warranty on them which my mother has gotten a new pair before the year is out due to splits for ages! Her muckboots last so much longer.

WishIWasACavewoman · 09/01/2023 16:52

I have Grub boots. I love them. Warm, lined, waterproof, the side of the rugby pitch has been a completely different place since last year when I got them.

1ittlegreen · 09/01/2023 16:52

I have a pair of tretorn and a pair of merrell. The latter are more snow boots, both are excellent and the tretorn perhaps a bit spenny bur do like the lower calf style.

Bigslippers · 09/01/2023 16:54

Ive had the same hunters for many years. I havent worn them for a few years as they were used when walking my dog through woodland.
They were brilliant but not sure if still as good as they were

NameIsBryceQuinlan · 09/01/2023 16:58

Oh I'm glad I asked, no way do I want to spend £90 on something that will leak really quickly

I recently discovered that they can be repaired. Mine were used for all my stable duties, so got a lot of wear that would be - um - corrosive.....
They do crack across the sole, but they can be sent away and fixed somehow (by a High Street shoe repair/key cutting etc shop).
Apparently they go to Prisons for the work to be done.

Baconand · 09/01/2023 16:59

Hunter are crap for the money.

I really like Town and Country premium ones. Cheap but seem to last well and I find them really comfy. Mine get tanked around in daily with horses. I do add a sheepskin insole to wellies though, warm in winter and cool in the warmer weather.

Le Chameau are lovely but life is too shirt to spend that on wellies. I do spend on leather country boots which I live in though.

I think short wellies are crap for walking in.

pineapples56 · 09/01/2023 17:09

I got some cheap(ish) mid height Hunters from M&M Direct which I use for light duties, school run etc which are holding up and look great. But I break out the Chameau's for proper rain and longer walks. They are pricey though so probably wont replace with the same once they're through.

ArabeI · 09/01/2023 17:19

The soles wear out very quickly on Hunter wellies. I wouldn't buy them now.

SkankingWombat · 09/01/2023 17:53

To add to the above complaints, it is also worth knowing they have a really narrow fit too. I bought a cheap second-hand pair for torrential school runs, but they were so uncomfortably tight. They went straight back onto FB Marketplace.

MissRainbowBrite · 09/01/2023 18:04

Aigle or Le Chameau neoprene lined wellies, you'll never wear normal wellies again. They aren't cheap but they'll last. I had a pair of Hunters that I bought in the 90's that lasted about 15 years but when it came to replacing them every review I read said don't touch Hunters with a barge pole.
Keep an eye out on Amazon, I got my Aigles from there as the less popular colours offer get reduced.

Radiatorvalves · 09/01/2023 18:23

My mum died in 1995 and I inherited her Hunters. Still going strong!

CaramelMach · 09/01/2023 18:24

They are shockingly pricey

alark · 09/01/2023 18:26

Le Chameau are amazing!

LouS84 · 09/01/2023 18:29

I’m a massive fan of Aigle wellies and their gorgeous leather boots, they are like le Chameau’s but much better value for money. Agree that Hunters are now all label and no quality.
