Has anyone ever had their colours done? Was it worth it?

Posted too soon.

I then get irritated on the "how to look chic/expensive" threads when the de rigueur coat is a camel coat with tan boots. Just no.

BlackFriday · 22/01/2023 17:51

I had mine done back in the 80s and was classified Spring then (although a friend trained some years later and said I could also wear some summer shades too.
New converts: start counting how many people compliment you/tell you you're looking "well" when you're wearing the "right" colours. I look old, ill and haggard in grey and white, but give me a bright clear red and I'm on fire!

crispinglovershighkick · 22/01/2023 18:06

My mum and I did it when things opened up a bit after lockdown; she was staying with us and we were desperate to find something to do. It was a real eye opener.
I always thought I was a winter (v dark hair, neutral pale skin, blue eyes) but felt great in some muted, tertiary colours and not great in some intense clear colours. I was analysed as a blue autumn, which now makes perfect sense.
It's well worth the time and money, and if you can stretch to a style analysis that's also very useful.

tobee · 22/01/2023 21:31

Stupidly I'm worried I'll be what I don't want to be (Autumn) when I want to be something else (winter). Think I might be on the cusp? When I self analyse I think I answer knowing what will make me winter 😬🤨😏

That's what I do too, even though I know it defeats the purpose! There are colours I really don't like and won't wear, however "good" they may look. Shall just have to opt for different tones of those colours, I guess.

purplecorkheart · 22/01/2023 21:58

I did. The actual colour analysis itself I had guessed before hand from watching some youtube videos. Admittedly my Consultant hoc was able to tell me before draping. i learned a lot about makeup colours and hair styling at my consult.

NotMeNoNo · 22/01/2023 22:06

I had convinced myself I was an autumn from DIY efforts. By House of Colour I was assessed as winter. They suggest you start by just sorting the "old colours" to one side of your wardrobe and seeing how you feel after a while. I did sort of grieve my brown and olive green but I got to keep burgundy and dark green which are my best colours.

You see colours differently as part of an overall look. I would never expect to wear bright pink or blue but they are ok in moderation and in the right style.

stevalnamechanger · 22/01/2023 23:14

I've been considering this for years and I think you've all sold me!

Loq · 22/01/2023 23:20

I went to a lady in Bedfordshire, her name was Lindsay but her surname escapes me. Incredible experience.

Loq · 22/01/2023 23:22

Thus is her instagram.com/reimagise

Fingerlimes · 22/01/2023 23:25

100% worth it . Have taken friends and family to Colour Me Beautiful. Think this colour insight should be taught in school!

QueenOfHiraeth · 23/01/2023 00:42

I had mine done overseas many years ago and was Winter but had it done again more recently here (over 30 years later) and was Blue Autumn

YellowHpok · 23/01/2023 14:03

Has anyone used anyone other than HOC?

I have zero colour in me anyway (I have the complexion of a pale targaryian) so woukd be interested to learn about neutrals.

I've used this lady (ig: emilyinnesstylist), it was quite affordable as well.

NotMeNoNo · 23/01/2023 21:00

You can still have a colour "season" even if you have quite gentle colouring, all the HOC seasons have their neutrals and accent colours. There are some interesting articles here www.kettlewellcolours.co.uk/blog/jo/back-to-basics-neutrals-for-every-palette

BaconAndAvocado · 23/01/2023 21:37

Myself and a friend went to Colour Me Beautiful in the early 90s.
It was a shock to find out that primary colours suit me more than the muted tones I was drawn to.
I’d love to have it done again as my hair colour is completely different now.

tobee · 23/01/2023 21:38

After reading this I had a quick look at HOC consultants in my area. Offering slightly different prices and session content. Anyone know if they're likely to be of the same standard?

Highonpower · 24/01/2023 05:16

I’m a dark dramatic Autumn. I wrestled with it for a while, I still wear black, navy and white - never grey though. I don’t suit all the colours on my palate - beige and cream are just awful- so I’m not a 100% convert. But it has helped me be more brave - Cos are doing a great Orange this season and Toast always has my colours. Shopping has become easier as I am more aware of what not to buy.

fantasmasgoria1 · 24/01/2023 05:57

I am alternative so it is no surprise I got dark winter!

😂 I agree. Colours that suit you will 'make you look expensive'.

I had mine done with Colour me Beautiful, who use the tonal system. I don't fit neatly into the seasonal system, as I have quite neutral skin (have also had HoC and she struggled a bit) I'm soft, light, warm, the 'soft' part being the most important.

Thank you for this I think I will give her a try. Despite living in a city there are zero HOC reps near me and even their online service seems expensive. If I'm paying that much I want the full draping of fabrics experience!

This has been really helpful, thanks ladies!

@YellowHpok glad to hear we have another convert to colour and style analysis.

The whole concept has opened my eyes to colours and shapes which had never appealed to me before. When I look at any 'work of art' now I see that all the colours used are from the same 'colour palette', with similar values. Sooo interesting.

Actually wanted to post to suggest that not all consultants are like. In an ideal world you will find one with a lot of experience and with whom you click. I wouldn't worry to much about finding someone local as you won't see them so very often. Finding someone recommended will to try Olu be worth a bit of a journey.

Riverlee · 24/01/2023 08:32

I had mine done by Style by Suzy and was analysed as autumn. It’s transformed what I buy also.

Funnily enough, before the analysis, I brought a smart black top because ‘black goes with everything’. I never wore it, and after my analysis, found out that black doesn’t suit autumns, but I should opt for navy blue instead. It’s expanded my wardrobe, because now I’m aware of a lot more colours that suit me (including ochre yellows!).

It’s not to say I don’t wear black. I quite happily wear a black cardigan, as long as the main top is an autumn colour. Wear colours that don’t suit me makes me look frumpy or washed out.

MacsJ · 24/01/2023 08:33

I had a HOC analysis and it was a waste of money. I already knew what sub season I'd be and I was right. There's so many free resources now available on YouTube and websites I would try and work it out myself before wasting the money on a consultation.

Also hoc is a franchise and I know some are mums who post here so I wouldn't trust all the previous comments. Also because hoc is a franchise hq don't really help much if you've had a bad experience with your stylist.

Smart decision! You can see some hoc consultants on Instagram and they often talk about colour. Free advice!
