Babyliss Big Hair or Revlon One Step?

Iamnotausername · 29/12/2022 12:12

I love my Babyliss Big Hair but after 4 years of faithful service, it's starting to die. The idea of being without it is leaving me bereft (OK, that's a tad melodramatic).

I'm wondering though whether the Revlon One Step is an even better choice? If you've had both, which one do you prefer? Does the Revlon dry hair? The Babyliss never did so I had to just use it as a finisher if that makes sense?

I have armpit wavy hair hair which has a tendency to frizz. I like smooth, bouncy hair. I don't want straight hair.

I know I should probably learn how to do a blow out with a round brush but I don't want to. 🤣

Has anyone used the Revlon in the USA?
I have a airwrap and love how smooth my hair is but they say not to use it in the US with a converter plug as it will invalidate the guarantee. So I am going to get the Revlon for a holiday.

Coffeepot72 · 31/12/2022 09:01

If you’re going to the USA I think you’ll need the American version of the appliance? Don’t ask me why but UK hair appliances don’t work well in America, their power is different

Isabelle70 · 31/12/2022 09:12

@Coffeepot72 yes I think that's what I need to do. They have them on Amazon so I will get one delivered to the hotel :)
I thought with the converter plug it would be ok but it seems the motors struggle to work and I don't fancy waving that around my hair!

Iamnotausername · 01/01/2023 11:46

Well, I got the Revlon. It was on offer in Boots and it sort of worked out at £30 (with a bit of fuzzy logic and falling for Boots advertising 😆).

I used it last night before bed. Living the life! Not impressed tbh. It left my hair a bit limp and dull. I know it wasn't going to give me newsreader hair but I didn't expect it to be so flat.It took longer than I thought too.

Woke up this morning and there is no way I'd be able to wear my hair down today. It's frizzy and weirdly stringy.

What products do you all use with yours? I wonder if that's the problem?

I love my Revlon One Step. I rough/air dry my hair until it's 90% dry, then finish with it on the lower setting. My hair condition is fine, I've had the One Step for over two years now.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2023 12:07

I have shiny hair anyway, and the smoothing makes my hair look shinier, if anything. I don't use any products on my hair after washing, my hair hates stuff in it! Obviously your hair may be different OP.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 01/01/2023 13:09

I used a big hair for years and it was great but over time my hair ended up overstretched and frizzy. I also found that quite a lot of hair got caught in the mechanism.

I now rough dry with Dyson supersonic (not the Airwrap, IMHO they are useless, I sold mine), then add volume and shine with the Onestep.

it i want extra volume/flicks/waves I add them the day after washing with straighteners.

sisuyo · 01/01/2023 13:10

I've got both, revlon much better, hair doesn't get tangled and the bristles are harder. It does indeed dry your hair from wet also.

i think the Onestep is more of a finisher than a dryer. You need your hair ti be at least 80% dry by whichever method you prefer, then finish it off with the Onestep. For volume get it right into the roots and lift the hair high while drying it.

Iamnotausername · 01/01/2023 14:11

Sorry, should have said, it was about 90% dry before using it. :)

Farmageddon · 01/01/2023 14:15

Sorry it didn't work for you OP, I love mine. Used it last night and my hair is sleek and smooth, with a bit of bounce and no frizz.

Maybe you could try selling it on or something.

Iamnotausername · 01/01/2023 14:17

I've only tried it once and suspect it's just me not using it properly so I'm after some tips before I give up. :)

Farmageddon · 01/01/2023 14:26

Well the first few times I used it, I only had it on the low setting because I was worried about it overheating. But it didn't seem to dry my hair properly, so switched to using the hottest setting and it did a much better job. I also sectioned it out a bit while drying.
Not sure if that helps.

Iamnotausername · 01/01/2023 15:47

So, I washed it, sprayed heat protectant on. Dried it to about 90%.

Added a touch of mousse on the roots. Sectioned it. Used the lowest heat setting (not the cold one) brushed it underneath from the root, sort of rolling it. Once that section was dry, I wrapped that section of hair around the brush and held it at the roots for a little bit, then clipped it in a roll, as if there was a roller on iyswim and left it.

Did that all over. Then used a hairdrier with diffuser on cold to cool the hair down. Left it a little, sprayed with a light hair spray and took everything out.

I’ve just realised there are at least 3 different Revlon one-steps!

  1. Titanium for all hair lengths
  2. Original (large barrel for mid to long hair)
  3. Pro (smaller - for mid to short hair)

I wonder which one you have? I had the original and then cut my hair from very long to very short bob, and so now it's probably going flat and sitting wrong because I'm using the wrong size.

Iamnotausername · 02/01/2023 11:16

It's confusing isn't it! 🤣

I have the original. Looking at reviews online, the newer one with the removable brush was only a little smaller and didn't make that much difference on longer hair. It was also twice as expensive.

I think it is the same one as the titanium? Or do they do the original size in titanium now as well? I've never seen much of a difference with ceramic / titanium tbh.

I wish they'd just call them different things to avoid this confusion! 🤣

Sorry, should have said my hair is armpit length.

OP posts:
Victoria2022 · 03/01/2023 16:15

From what I understand, the original is ceramic and has a black barrel, the titanium one has a silver barrel with black spikes and is reasonably smaller. From YouTube reviews (sale to be believed). It seems the titanium is better for the hair, faster to dry and easier to style, but I haven't got the titanium one and so I couldn't comment.

beachcitygirl · 03/01/2023 16:28

I previously would have died defending babyliss big hair, but I've just found the drybar double shot & it's incredible!!!
Like the babyliss but uou can use it on soaking wet hair & it's got 3 speeds & hest! A bit more expensive at £120 but still
Much cheaper than dyson etc x

QueenMabs · 03/01/2023 18:05

@beachcitygirl the drybar one loos exactly like the revlon - is there any difference?

I do love my revlon. The BBH is not for the uncoordinated!

It's because their electricity flows on the wrong way side of the circuit.

Sorry couldn't help myself, they use 110V instead of 230V which means heating elements don't get as hot, its why they don't really have electric kettles out their either. An adaptor lets you plug the appliance in but its still trying to run on 110V.

This is interesting to hear as I am very uncoordinated. Just had my hair done today and feeling slightly down about how it will never look as good as today ever again.

Do you just use it like a brush or is there more to it?

QueenMabs · 03/01/2023 20:08

@LivingDeadGirlUK yes the one
Step really easy idiot proof.

You an either just run it though your hair like a brush so over the top or section it and do it from underneath. It has a cool tip and a swivelly coats that means you sort of swirl it through but there is zero thought that goes into it.

Hold in right hand, put under section, pull through and spin it round using left hand in cool tip. Hair does glide effortlessly and is no hassle.

I section of the top and do the bottom mid and crown in three sections.
