Babyliss Big Hair or Revlon One Step?

Iamnotausername · 29/12/2022 12:12

I love my Babyliss Big Hair but after 4 years of faithful service, it's starting to die. The idea of being without it is leaving me bereft (OK, that's a tad melodramatic).

I'm wondering though whether the Revlon One Step is an even better choice? If you've had both, which one do you prefer? Does the Revlon dry hair? The Babyliss never did so I had to just use it as a finisher if that makes sense?

I have armpit wavy hair hair which has a tendency to frizz. I like smooth, bouncy hair. I don't want straight hair.

I know I should probably learn how to do a blow out with a round brush but I don't want to. 🤣

I've heard the revlon one gets hot, really too hot, even on its lowest, so I reconsidered since I really don't want that damage. Watched multiple hair YouTube reviewers saying this, so something to be wary of.

Coffeepot72 · 29/12/2022 16:34

I have both the Revlon and the Babyliss. If you want bounce or curls (or big hair - the clue is in the name!) then the Babyliss is for you but the Revlon gives a sleeker finish. With either appliance,I would use a hairdryer til my hair is approx 80% dry, and finish with the Babyliss or Revlon.

Sorry, not going to say anything very helpful but your post made me chuckle because I couldnt live without my Babyliss Big Hair either. I think you have done well to get 4 years out of yours because mine never seem to last that long, I must be on my 3rd by now. I have thought about trying something else but never actually done it.

Iamnotausername · 29/12/2022 21:37

Ha. I've just re-read my post and it reads as if I'm trying to style my underarm hair. 🤣

I only wash my hair once a week or so and generally leave it air dry so that has probably helped it's longevity. Before I bought it, I know a few people said they don't last very long. So I'm going to claim, I'm not lazy, I'm just looking after it by nit doing my hair very often.

A simple plait suffices I find. 😂

There was a higher thread about this a few days ago. It's really helpful as some are team BBH and some are team ROS.

I'll try and link it (new territory, bear with 🐻)

Babyliss Big Hair? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4701531-babyliss-big-hair

Victoria2022 · 29/12/2022 21:48

Revlon makes the hair shiny and flat, babyliss makes it volumous and bouncy.

mincepiepie · 29/12/2022 21:50

I'm team Revlon as the BBH over dries my hair and doesn't crest the bouncy curls I'm after. I'm really ham fisted and the Revlon is idiot proof! I have fine armpit length hair.

Namaste6 · 29/12/2022 21:54

I've had both OP, and the Revlon wins it for me. You have to physically twist the dryer yourself, but the bristles and structure is more robust, I feel, than the BB.

SharpLily · 29/12/2022 21:59

I've had both and will stick with the Revlon. The BBH was an instrument of torture, constantly catching up stray bits of hair and pulling them out of my head.

Iamnotausername · 29/12/2022 23:58

@mincepiepie

Thank you! How funny that it was only a few days ago! It was helpful. I think I'll stick with the BBH. I don't like the sound of how hot the revlon gets and having used the BBH tonight, I like the effect the rotatation has.

But yes, you do have to section your hair well and keep stray hair away from it or risk being scalped.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 30/12/2022 00:29

The Revlon is idiot proof, I've never been able to style my hair properly until I bought one. I do get good volume from it but not 'newsreader hair' IYKWIM.

It's hot enough to dry my incredibly thick hair, I don't even own a hairdryer, but I do tend to air dry about 50% unless really pressed for time. With good heat protection products, I'm not noticing any damage - my hair's bleached, only trimmed every 12 weeks, and in pretty good condition. Like you I only style once a week which probably helps.

DumpedByText · 30/12/2022 00:33

I have both, Revlon is the best but gets very hot. I can't use it on the highest setting as it fries your hair, it honestly does give a salon smooth blow dry though and I always get comments when I've used it.

Kidsandcat · 30/12/2022 10:03

I think it depends on the looks you're after. I find bbh gives my hair more body than a bouncy blow dry but revlon is more like a bouncy blow dry.

I find revlon so easy to use, I do rough dry my hair till it is just slightly damp before using and then do it in sections. It's really quick.

BbH seemed to take longer and takes a while to get used to the rotating mechanism. I found I only used it for special events whereas revlon I use every wash now.

I like both but am lazy so revlon better for me. Got to say when my hair was cut shorter (shoulder length) I found both harder to use. Now my hair is about 4 inch below shoulder bother are easier. My hair is pretty fine but there's lots of it.

Farmageddon · 30/12/2022 11:16

I never used the Babyliss sorry so can't compare, but I got the Revlon One Step a few weeks ago as it was on sale in Boots, and after a few false starts I really love it.

I'm just using it in place of a hairdryer and round brush, not trying to achieve curls or anything. I had planned to buy a new hairdryer and bought this instead, and I'm so glad I did.
I have below shoulder length thick, slightly wavy hair, and it gives me a sleek straight finish with a bit of bounce.

I started off using just the lowest setting and it took ages and my hair wasn't properly dry after, but the last few times I left my hair to air dry for about 20 mins and then used the highest setting which gave me a salon type blowdry.

It does get pretty hot to the touch, but there is a plastic bit on the end that you can hold on to so as not to burn your hand.

Singinghollybob · 30/12/2022 21:19

I've got the Revlon and I find it does leave my hair a lot smoother than I can manage with a brush and hairdryer, however I've noticed a lot of hair damage since using it. The condition is still fine bit a lot of hair strands have broken, and I only use it probably once every few weeks, and no other changes to my hair care or products.

Iamnotausername · 30/12/2022 21:59

That's what I'm concerned about. The HD messed up my bleach last time so my hair isn't feeling as good as it was. I don't want to damage it anymore with bleach or heat.

OP posts:
pinkyponkyplink · 31/12/2022 00:10

The revlon one step has broken my hair. It gives a fantastic result but I have so many broken hairs as a result. It seems to get hot too

QueSyrahSyrah · 31/12/2022 00:12

I haven't had a Babyliss but I have the Revlon and love it. What I would say is it takes time to go from freshly washed to dry, so I tend to air-dry or rough-dry a bit first, and then finish with the Revlon, but it saves me having to straighten it afterwards.

Coffeepot72 · 31/12/2022 07:27

Good point @QueSyrahSyrah i don’t need straighteners either if I’ve used the Revlon. But if I use the Babyliss I tend to end up a bit ‘bouffant’ and need the straighteners. I find the Revlon gives a sleeker finish.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/12/2022 07:43

I have both. Revlon wins it for me! Good results. I don't like the rotating brush that much on babyliss and it also keeps slowing down.
