If you have narrow ankles, where do you find shoes that don't fall off your heel the whole time?

because this is starting to piss me off.

I'm fine now because I can wear boots but it's not going to be too long till the weather warms up and I need some shoes for work.

Went and tried on a load today and everything falls off my heels. I remember this problem before and got some heels with a strap over the middle (which I will probably have to do again this time) but they aren't the most attractive and I'm wondering whether there's a shoe shop I haven't discovered that specifically has shoes that address this problem (oh, also have high instep which doesn't help grrr).

one final bump before I consign myself to a life of ill fitted shoes

Did you ever use those sticky 'heel grip' things when you were younger? I remember them being very good at keeping 'too big' shoes on at the heel. Don't know if you can still get them though.

Failing that, I think its lace ups for you from now on!

Pannacotta · 03/02/2008 19:37

I have this problem too. I havent yet found a solution.
I wear boots for too long, then move over to sandals before its really warm enough.
Sorry not much help was I?

KatyMac · 03/02/2008 19:37

Sling backs - they are the only way to go

Not always stylish but most practical

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 19:38

lol

Yes, I could do that when I didn't work but I now need presentable shoes. Have one pair with this strap thing!

Thats true Katymac, in fact one of my best fitting pairs of shoes is some Carvela sling backs.

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 19:39

what are sling backs?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 03/02/2008 19:40

Umm
No heel - just a strap?

Maidamess · 03/02/2008 19:41

Have you tried using elastic bands?

Boredveryverybored · 03/02/2008 19:43

Yes I also have this problem, have not found a shop where I can find proper fitting shoes yet. But I do but heel grip thingies which help with some shoes, and as someone said I buy a fair few slingbacks with buckle things on so I can tighten them around the heel.
If you do find another solution let me know!

OverMyDeadBody · 03/02/2008 19:43

at your narrow ankles!

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 19:46

aaah will look for heel grip things. Yes, my sandals tend to be sling backs. Might have to wait till the weather is much warmer then buy a smartish pair of shoes like that.

Haven't tried elastic bands but suspect they would piss me off.

Will post a pic of shoes I bought because they work but do have blardy great strap across high instep which will annoy in the end.

OP posts:
Maidamess · 03/02/2008 19:48

Ahh, foxinsocks, please don't take my elastic band suggestion seriously. Poor attempt at humour!

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 19:49

lol I am that desperate, I would consider it

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/02/2008 19:50

I don't!

I have to wear shoes that come up my foot or have straps.

Maidamess · 03/02/2008 19:50

Fox, my postie leaves loads of snazzy red ones on the pavement outside my house if you want me to pop a few in a jiffy bag.

Lalisa · 03/02/2008 19:52

Have you tried ordering shoes in narrow width (or is just your heels that are narrow?). Narrow widths are hard to find in the UK, so sometimes I've found a shoe of a major brand that I liked then ordered online to get it in a narrow. Its much easier to find narrow width shoes in normal shoe shops in the US in my experience. I've also had shop assistants here tell me to shop in Spain or Italy as they supposedly have narrower feet

Am also a big fan of the style with the strap across the foot. they were fashionable for a while (still are? I'm out of touch) so there was such a big selection in the shops that you could find some that looked nice.

but mostly, I shop for ever and ever till I find something that fits, buy a few pair then never wear anything else.

KatyMac · 03/02/2008 19:53

Narrow width don't work for me

The front of my foot is wide and flat (shallow)

My heel is delicate & ladylike

Maidamess · 03/02/2008 19:54

Are your feet shaped like flippers Katymac?

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 19:56

yes, I do have quite narrow feet but the front part tends to flatten out a bit - also, the high instep doesn't help because I need the bit round the middle to be wide enough to encompass that iyswim.

I agree it is hard to find narrow fit here - most shops seem to have wide fit shoes but not narrow fit which is odd.

I'm pondering where/whether we are going on holiday this year - maybe I should pop over to France and buy loads of shoes there!

lol maidemess, my postie does the same. Maybe we live on the same street

It's so disappointing, isn't it, to see this fab pair of shoes and then you try them on and they just slip off your heels ?

KatyMac · 03/02/2008 20:00

Yes - except for my dainty toes

foxinsocks · 03/02/2008 20:01

yes expat. It really pisses me off grrrrr.

There must be some shoes made for narrow heels. I will have to look harder .

OP posts:
fishie · 03/02/2008 20:04

i have the high instep, broad toe thing too. coupled with a skinny heel & ankle = i only ever wear boots or sandals.

have had minor success with russell & bromley / clarks ballet shoes but there was a mighty lot of wearing in of both feet and shoes.
