Dryrobe

Looking at purchasing one of these after borrowing a friend's for wet dog walks in Cornwall a couple of weeks ago. I've seen there are alternatives available, such as Ocean Robe, which cost a lot less. Is the cost of a Dryrobe (£160.00) worth it??

I read a piece in the Guardian yesterday about people buying these to wear as coats, rather than for their intended purchase. If you really like the style of one, go for it, but why a dry robe rather than a good water/windproof coat (Seasalt have excellent versions of the latter and they currently have a sale)?

gogohmm · 27/12/2022 16:23

I have one for open water swimming, it is excellent but not that waterproof, not dog walking In hills waterproof at least. I strongly recommend a high hydrostatic head rating 3 in 1 jacket, for the same money it will get you dryer and warmer

Paq · 27/12/2022 16:24

I have a dryrobe for winter swimming but I wouldn't wear it for dog walking, it's quite heavy and cumbersome and the hood can't be tightened.

rwalker · 27/12/2022 16:30

I’ve a moonwrap (£80)for open water swimming
there more trendy than practical for a dog walk

rwalker · 27/12/2022 16:31

Oh primary did there version for think £39 but only in bigger stores

rwalker · 27/12/2022 16:31

Primark

CMOTDibbler · 27/12/2022 16:52

I have Dryrobe like robes for outdoor swimming, but for wet dog walking there are much better alternatives imo. I have a Lands End Stadium squall which is warm, covers everything, and is waterproof - but not as flappy as a DryRobe type thing.

Chocolateteabag · 27/12/2022 17:18

I had this Moonwrap on for a bit watching a wet rugby match and was most put out when it's owner came off the pitch and wanted it back

Waterproof and warm but much less than a dry robe

EllaPaella · 27/12/2022 17:49

I have an Osprey one for open water swimming. Having looked at a few different brands they are all much of a muchness. I find mine is actually very waterproof and is really handy for camping as well.

mrsalfstewart · 27/12/2022 20:05

Thanks all for the recommendations. I would also use it to watch my sons when they play rugby and hockey, so not just for dog walking. I will take a look at all those suggested. Much appreciated.

I have one for the horses/rugby/dog walks 👍

FestivePinkFairy · 27/12/2022 20:11

I have a Dryrobe for sea swimming. Have also used while camping but it's bulky and not ideal as an everyday coat. I did go to a kids rugby match a couple of weeks ago when it was really cold and there were lots of parents on the touch line wearing them.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/12/2022 20:13

If it's not for open swimming, have you looked at a brand like Didriksons? Fully waterproof / windproof and perfect for dog walks etc..

Fcuk38 · 27/12/2022 20:16

Loads of people wear these at my sons sort- not swimming- and I don’t get it as they don’t look at all warm or that waterproof. Complete and utter “ look at me” people.

2reefsin30knots · 27/12/2022 20:23

I have one and love it, but it's very much for static activities like watching my DS sail in winter or taking a car-nap when it's cold.

I have a Seasalt Janelle for doing things in the rain and cold. It's not beautiful but it is VERY good at it's job. It's totally waterproof and magically seems to keep me warm when I'm not doing much but doesn't over-heat me when I get moving. It doesn't feel bulky to wear so I can crack on and do work in it. I don't have a dog any more, but it would be ideal for that. It also appears to be utterly indestructible.

AnnieSnap · 27/12/2022 20:29

@2reefsin30knots I wore my Seasalt Janelle in Antartica and it kept me warm and dry 🙂

RupertBearsScarf · 27/12/2022 20:34

Yes to the Janelle. Not a thing of beauty but it does everything a decent coat should. Unstylish as it is, I've seen people out in dryrobes and assumed they've been swimming and forgotten their coats, they don't look like they should be worn 'out' iykwim.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/12/2022 20:46

I'm an outdoor swimmer and I regularly walk DM's dog.

My DryRobe is excellent for changing under if needed, and warming up after a swim. It is far to big, warm and flappy for dog walking. I have a very old, but still in excellent condition, insulated Patagonia Parka for that.

Same. I wore it camping last year and had to give everyone a try on and they all wanted jt ! Was £68 I think in the sale

mrsalfstewart · 28/12/2022 11:21

Thanks again for all the replies. I've just looked at the Seasalt Janelle which is in the sale, also Didriksons, I like both of these. The Patagonia parka is lovely but quite pricey! Off to look at the Osprey too.

Look at Gorilla robe as well - UK firm, cheaper than dryrobe. Wouldn't use any of these as coats though - too big

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 28/12/2022 11:32

I've got a lands end long coat for standing on the try line in the rain. It's warm, water proof and goes down to the top of my wellies. DH has a dryrobe which he uses post swim etc - it doesn't have useful pockets etc and isn't intended for monsoons. If you're going to spend money, I'd spend it on clothing designed for the weather you'll be in.

mrsalfstewart · 28/12/2022 11:47

The Lands End coat also looks great, I'm definitely looking for something long that goes down to the top of my wellies, so either this or the Seasalt Janelle.

Really good tips, thanks all, I think a long waterproof parka is actually the best option. Smile

mrsalfstewart · 28/12/2022 12:54

@Monkeytapper I like this one too, looks like it's out of stock unfortunately.
