Warm walking boot

Derbybound2022 · 26/12/2022 20:58

I'm looking to buy a warm winter walking boot. I would like wool or fur lined inside as my feet get cold, as waterproof and stylish as possible too.

What’s your budget?

Derbybound2022 · 26/12/2022 21:30

Up to £300

Not specifically walking boots, but I wear these constantly, including on long walks, and they are incredibly comfy and warm (I have Raynaud's but even on the coldest day, I have not suffered in these). Also waterproof - have had them two years and not leaked once.

I did have to size up as they come up small.

Ha ha, perhaps on the different end of the scale.

Derbybound2022 · 26/12/2022 21:35

Thank you! That's much more my kind of budget! I only said that as I got Xmas money and it seems to cost hundreds for boots these days!

£300? Really? Crikey. I thought it was the socks that are warm, rather than the boot

Derbybound2022 · 26/12/2022 21:39

I have tried that. I'm always freezing and had some disasters with shoes and wellies I bought recently leaking so was willing to invest.

I'm a fan of Sorel boots. I have the Witney II which are warm, waterproof & very comfortable.

Justonedayatatime11 · 26/12/2022 21:42

Fairfax and Favor Boudicas

swapcicles · 26/12/2022 21:44

Whatever you buy you will need to try them on properly to get a decent fit, I'd go to an outdoor shop for advice on the different types and to try on as many as you can.
Socks are also important, Bridgedale ones are highly recommended, though pricey

KnickerlessParsons · 26/12/2022 22:04

Do you want a proper "walking/hiking boot" or just a warm and comfy boot to have the odd walk around the park? If the former, go to your newrest Cotswold Outdoor and ask for advice and try on as many as you need to.

SummerLove2306 · 26/12/2022 22:53

I bought these two years ago and they're still going strong! Keep my feet nice and warm - and I always have cold feet!

I've got Sorel gore Tex boots. Sorel are a Canadian company I think so designed for cold winter's. They are warm as have thinsulate and the gore Tex is waterproof. They look like chunky high top trainers and come in pretty colours (well, pale colours!) but mine are grey and black as more practical. Kept my feet warm and dry on many football sidelines and watching cross country events.
They are ok for a casual country walk but not great grip for a technical hike when it's muddy or rocky. I very inelegantly slid down a muddy field last winter in my Sorel's so have invested in Adidas Terrex walking shoes where more grip but less warmth is needed.

LondonSouth28 · 26/12/2022 23:25

I second @Jumbojem re the Sorel boots. I have them for snow and my feet never get cold (and I'm a super cold person). They do a Sorel walking boot - if I was buying walking boots I'd go for Sorel. They're usually £150-£200 price.

Todaynotalways · 26/12/2022 23:28

I've got these Sorel snow boots: www.sorelfootwear.co.uk/p/womens-sorel-explorer-ii-joan-winter-boot-1951631.html?dwvar_1951631_color=010

Not suitable for mountain walking (not the right type of grip) but very warm, and good for normal terrain.

Note they come up small, and are quite narrow - I'm usually a 5.5 and bought a 6.5 which fit perfectly. And I have narrow feet.

I have tried that. I'm always freezing and had some disasters with shoes and wellies I bought recently leaking so was willing to invest.

I'd go for good goretex walking boots and 2 pairs of socks - thin smooth liners, wool outer. Comfortable all year round except really hot weather IME.

Todaynotalways · 26/12/2022 23:32

@Derbybound2022 though if you're looking for an alternative to wellies, I wear these: muckbootcompany.co.uk/collections/womens-horse-stable/products/mens-chore-classic-hi-patterned-wellington-black they are AMAZINGLY warm, comfortable and grippy.

These ones (unlike the Sorel's) come up big, and a bit wide - even so they are super comfortable (esp. v. wellies).

They feel really sturdy, I sometimes wonder if I'll ever need to replace them as they are such good quality.

Derbybound2022 · 27/12/2022 09:35

I forgot to say I have wide feet and plantar fasciitis as well as being always cold so wellies are a night mare and leave me in pain

Leather will be more waterproof for longer than gortex - and wet feet are often cold feet

And buy so you can wear thin and think socks to keep the feet warm

I'd try Cotswolds for VfM

midgetastic · 27/12/2022 09:46

The and leather will /can be stretched

Rotherweird · 27/12/2022 09:50

I have a pair of leather Scarpa boots which are incredibly warm and still going strong after 5 years

RupertBearsScarf · 27/12/2022 09:58

Are you after 'proper' walking boots or something stylish and cosy that you can go for a walk in? I'm not sure sure from your post.

If you're after proper walking boots, then it's all about the socks rather than just the boots. I wore Salomon GTX walking boots in -35° in northern Finland, along with a pair of merino socks and then some thick wool socks on top. That worked perfectly and my feet didn't feel the cold. You can also get thermal insoles.

If style is more important, maybe a pair of Mammals would work?

Not IME - my berghaus boots (which are quite a wide fit) have never leaked, and I've used them when doing conservation volunteering squelching around in wet vegetation and mud. But you can get leather boots with goretex.

katmunchkin · 27/12/2022 10:17

Depending what kind of walking you're looking to do, Fairfax and Favor Boudicas, Explorers or Anglesey's are all shearling lined.

WarningToTheCurious · 27/12/2022 10:27

I have a pair of fur lined Ara boots that are Goretex. Good for general walking rather than proper hiking though. I also have wide feet and suffer from PF.
