fuzzy hair - nothing works!

Seriously. It's all a giant con.
I have healthy yet fuzzy hair, quite wavy, doesn't hold a curl.

Tried:
Curly girl, just no.
Kerastase, no difference, in fact some, even up to £40 made it worse.
Aussie - nope.
Liz Earle - nice smell no change.
Keratin - drier, and it isn't generally dry!
Basic stuff from supermarket - no change. Certainly no worse!
Babyliss big hair - more frizz.
Straighteners, both cloud9 and GHD - snaps, dries, cripples.
Blow drying - poof, kinks, fuzz.
Tying back in a pony - snaps and creates breakage.
Wearing loose - fuzz.

Anyone else like this? Fed up of spending as there is no solution? I am tempted to embrace my mad hair and wait until society reels back into adoring it, lol.
It will happen!
Do we even need a solution? Why do we believe that our hair is even bad?

Can you show a picture?

howlingmoon · 19/12/2022 23:40

Ooh not at moment, dim light and it is wet!

I think we need to embrace fuzzy hair!

Camellia oil. Put it on once a week wrap your head up so it warms through for a couple of hours. Then wash your hair as normal. Failing that henna will work but there’s a colour change even when used as a conditioner.

Not tried this! I don't wish to alter the colour, but can you tell me if this oil is ok for fine hair (lots of it, etc)? Oils usually leave it limp and greasy.

I have honestly tried everything at this point.

I think you can only try and see? It doesn’t make my little girls hair lank.

Bibbitybobbityboot · 19/12/2022 23:59

My hair has been horrendously fuzzy since moving from a soft to hard water area. I only figured this out when we went to Cornwall on holiday and all
of us had smooth hair for a week. Anyway I have been using Living Proof detox shampoo which has actually helped somewhat, and am looking into any hard water filters for the shower.

aspicset · 20/12/2022 00:02

Strong hold gel, the strongest. Use on damp, wet or dry. Let dry to a cast then scrunch out if you prefer, for softness. Though you'll have to experiment. It's the only thing to prevent frizz bar hairspray or a hat.

I use hair glue (not actual glue of course) for buns to smooth ponytails and buns to make them frizz free. Wet hair first if need be.

aspicset · 20/12/2022 00:03

Use silk hair ties so no breakage. Satin if watching budget.

RiverSkater · 20/12/2022 00:04

What about coconut oil as a pre shampoo conditioner? It builds keratin or something in the hair. Iv managed to grow my hair for the first time in ages because it's no longer dry and brittle.

aspicset · 20/12/2022 00:05

I rarely blow dry hair or use heat. Before the gels, after washing hair, I use a leave in conditioner spray then kerastase oil on the ends then I plait and leave to dry.

GLADragss · 20/12/2022 00:05

Keratin smoothing treatment?

some hair textures need the boost it can provide, products alone won’t help x

personally my hair is very sleek naturally so I felt the keratin treatment was too rich, but it should be perfect for you

GLADragss · 20/12/2022 01:47

You know what, I’ve just realised my hair has been similar to yours today. I think it’s the weather? I did wash it this morning and rushed the blow dry which probably didn’t help so the cuticle is grabbing onto moisture in the air and getting frizzy/puffy?

Itisbetter · 20/12/2022 02:21

Coconut oil works but it’s much claggier than camellia (though massively cheaper). I think it can leave a smell that turns not so nice after a while. Honestly try the camellia oil, get a tiny bottle because it lasts for aaaaaaages. Camellia will transform your nails too, win win

fallfallfall · 20/12/2022 02:54

Moroccan oil intense curl cream (even if you have zero curl) one pump, rub your hands together and apply to your hair.
don't buy ask for samples at shops (you might need to supply your own pill bottle), or e-mail companies and request samples be mailed to you (i currently have several sunscreen samples coming to try out).

When I first moved to London my hair went hugely fuzzy due to the change to hard water. A colleague told me to use shampoo after conditioner - so I use shampoo, then conditioner, then a final round of shampoo. I noticed a difference and still do this now 8 years later.

gertrudemortimer · 20/12/2022 10:06

Keratin smoothing treatment is the only thing that worked for me and it's still a lot more manageable after 6 months. There's different types of treatment I got the one that doesn't change the wave of my hair it just reduces frizz and makes it smoother.

One thing that works for me when I dry and straighten it is L'Oréal no haircut cream I put a big dollop through it when it's wet and it feels much silkier but the actual solution was the keratin treatment it cost me £65 for medium length hair, city salons probably charge £100+

More like £200 in London?

I've given up OP but like a pp, think loreal no haircut cream is good.

Bimbleberries · 20/12/2022 10:08

which type of keratin treatment did you get? Did it change the colour/could you colour afterwards? Mine is very fuzzy but also almost 100% grey if I didn't colour it (grey is partly what makes it fuzzy/frizzy/wavy!)

gertrudemortimer · 20/12/2022 11:47

@EmmaAgain22 yeah it's probably more like £200 in London. The salon I sometimes go to in Leeds centre was charging about £180 I think. I asked a local hairdressers and they bought the stuff in for me. I said I didn't want the shape of my waves to go and I wanted it smooth and frizz free.

I've tried uploading before and after photos of my hair when it's air dried and brushed through but it isn't letting me look through my albums to get the photos.

@Bimbleberries sorry I don't know what the product was called, I just made it clear I didn't want it poker straight. I'm not sure about colouring either sorry.

gertrudemortimer · 20/12/2022 11:50

Here we go. This was my hair after the first wash, it's a pain at first as you can't tie it up for several days after and you need to avoid tucking your hair and doing anything that will cause it to hold a crease

Dyson hair smoother attachment - if you have a Dyson. I have hair like yours, and have tried everything; this is the best thing ever, it's £30 and you sort of hoover your hair down. It doesn't damage your hair, it's quick and easy, and it works.

Motnight · 20/12/2022 11:57

I use a silk pillowcase, aveda or redken shampoo and conditioner. Use a comb to comb conditioner through in the shower. Finish rinsing my hair with cold water. Davine's milk before hairdryer.

My hair isn't perfect but is definitely far less frizzy doing all these things

schnubbins · 20/12/2022 12:06

I have just got a Dyson and must say it is fabulous for getting rid of the frizz.I have thick wavy hair shoulder length hair and live in a hard water area so struggle always with the frizz. The Dyson and all its attachments is just brilliant. The cost is just a bit much though. My husband and kids bought it for me so I am really thrilled !

LemonSwan · 20/12/2022 12:13

My diagnosis. Protein/ Moisture imbalance.

Keratin and Kerastase made it worse = protein overload. Super dry and brittle.

Curly girl doesn’t work = low porosity hair.

Low porosity curls are a challenge. I have them. You need a good curl by curl dry cut (when they cut it dry).

Use preslip wash by curl smith. You need to open very difficult hair shaft to allow moisture to penetrate.

Clarifying is important as your hair is prone to product build up.

Avoid protein like the plague. Don’t go too harsh on the moisturiser as it needs to be light enough to penetrate so coconut and things for high porosity curls will kill your hair.

Embrace silicones and sulfates and all the things blacklisted by curly girl method.

Hot oil treatments work well. Never cowash.

search low porosity curls on curly girls Reddit and you will find some answers.

Goodluck.

LemonSwan · 20/12/2022 12:15

And on the plus side when you crack the low porosity issue you will have the healthiest most impenetrable hair - less prone to frizz, won’t loose moisture. It will be glossy and strong and invincible!

Silver linings.
