First Coast, then Karen Millen and Ted Baker now Reiss

Went in to Reiss today and they are selling viscose jumpers for £100. The quality in there seems to have deteriorated since being taken over by Next. The jumpers felt like Next quality for Reiss prices. I had a beautiful Reiss skirt which I bought in the sale 20 years ago, it was lined and such good quality. I have a silk Ted Baker top from 20 years ago same quality. Sadly I couldn’t afford to buy much then and I wish I had because now I can’t find anything similar. I feel so old. Have bought a few vintage Karen Millen skirts from eBay which are lovely.

If you liked any of these brands before where are you shopping now? I would like a nice jumper made from wool or wool mix but not massively oversized. Any ideas please? I have run out of brands that I like so maybe it’s a sign to stop shopping altogether!

The men's section is mostly good quality materials in wool, linen and cotton. The women's not so much they've been using cheap materials for years. I haven't shopped there for around 5 years.

WhereAreWeNow · 16/12/2022 06:14

I'm the same OP. I used to have lovely silk skirts and merino jumpers from Reiss and Karen Millen. Have you looked at Cos and & Other Stories for wool jumpers?

Sagittariusrising · 16/12/2022 14:19

Jigsaw might be worth a look - they use a lot of natural materials. Otherwise, I tend to try Woolovers for basic jumpers.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/12/2022 14:33

I have bought two recently from Hobbs. Both wool mix.

Cherryblossoms85 · 16/12/2022 14:53

Try wolf and badger. Online only. I also still quite like phase eight.

Poppledowntownistheloveliest · 18/12/2022 16:40

Thanks for the suggestions. Am going to order a couple of jumpers from Jigsaw and see what they’re like. I find their styling a bit odd but maybe I’m just used a certain look!

I do find it frustrating how men seem to get better quality @Mercurial123 I don’t really want flouncy sleeves or trends but the men’s all have really high necks. I do have a nice Reiss wool men’s one will have a look.

Also saw some nice looking silk shirts in &other stories but wasn’t keen on much else. The Reiss silk shirts were £200 so twice the price!

It's so true about mens stuff. They seem to make men simple, well cut clothes out of decent materials (cotton and wool etc.)

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/12/2022 16:51

Last pieces I bought from Coast were appalling quality, so don’t shop there anymore. If I go to KM or Reiss I check the fabric/materials etc make up before I buy - I got a couple of nice knits from KM recently. My fave jumpers are from Bella Freud - defo quite pricy but you can get lucky in the sale.

roses2 · 18/12/2022 16:53

Ebay and charity shops. It's the only place I can find decent quality for a price that doesn't make me cry!

Iamthewombat · 18/12/2022 17:02

Reiss have not been taken over by Next. Next sell a range of brands on their website, including Reiss, but they don’t own all of them. Reiss is owned by a private equity fund.

I don’t disagree that the quality has slipped though. It really irritates me. 15 years ago, all the brands you listed in your OP sold well-made clothes in lovely natural fabrics. I still mourn Karen Millen as it was in its heyday.

I find Winser London pretty good for natural fibres.

Poppledowntownistheloveliest · 18/12/2022 17:08

@Purplecatshopaholic but shocked at the ‘hello cunty’ t shirts 😳

@Iamthewombat ah thanks for clarifying, I had assumed that was the reason for decline but maybe just following suit with everyone else. I saw they had posted about some collaboration with Khloe Kardashian on IG and it didn’t seem to go down too well. Also all their models are very thin so not very inclusive. Yes, indeed. I would like to go time travel shopping please. Will have a look at Winser London.

Also, what’s Sezane like anyone?

Cos is fantastic quality and lasts.

Paintedocean · 18/12/2022 17:14

I second jigsaw. Love their knitwear and find it washes well. Quite expensive but I tend to buy when they’re doing 20% off at least.

hildgard · 18/12/2022 17:17

Uniqlo 3d cashmere knitwear is lovely.

WrongTopic · 18/12/2022 17:21

I am reporting when I see them, to be fair most of them do get moved. Just need to keep reporting them for wrong topic, unless they are in Trending and are actually in the right topic.

If people would take time to check before posting and actually post in the right place there wouldn't be all this annoyance and anger and people not using the site any more. It was like this during Covid, then there was a topic for it and eventually it cooled off, this crap looks as if it going to go on for ages yet. I left because of the Covid stuff taking over everywhere, don't really want to be driven out by such a waste of space this time.

Iamthewombat · 18/12/2022 17:24

Is this an ironic post?

WrongTopic · 18/12/2022 17:25

Ahh, no, it was a glitch, page not found, and ended up in the wrong place. Just ignore me, most people do.

Summerfun54321 · 18/12/2022 17:48

Do you know what Viscose is OP? It's a natural plant based fabric that's breathable and hangs really nicely. I absolutely would pay £100 for a viscose jumper and have some lovely viscose dresses that have kept their shape and quality for years that I spent £150-£200 on.

Acrylic and polyester are the horrid cheap plastic fibres that should be avoided. Not saying this to be patronising, I know lots of people just don't know what viscose is.

Changechangychange · 18/12/2022 17:53

Reiss has always been really shit quality! The seams used to fall apart the moment you got out of the shop - not an issue if it was just the hem, but I had coats and dresses where the seams would just unravel.

Looked lovely, but I stopped buying in there in about 2005 because I was sick of them falling apart so quickly.

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/12/2022 17:57

For wool jumpers, Lands End, M & S, Boden. But agree it is difficult to find something in natural fibres.

Iamthewombat · 18/12/2022 17:59

I know what viscose is too. It creases like a bastard and shrinks.

Zooeyzo · 18/12/2022 18:04

I have some lovely silk dresses from reiss but are now 10 years old. Agree that it's all shit quality now. @Summerfun54321 yes viscose is natural but doesn't hang as nicely as cotton imo

RampantIvy · 18/12/2022 18:06

Woolovers, Uniqlo?

woodhill · 18/12/2022 18:16

I wouldn't pay £100 for viscose

It's ok but nothing like cotton or wool
