Lisbon - what to buy & where?

Dear Stylish Mumsnetters,

I am going to Lisbon is January (haven't been for 10 years!) for a few days and this time round I really, really want to purchase some good quality 'stuff' for myself. Stuff such as - hand & body cream, soap, chocolate, bed linen, trad painted tiles (to hang), perfume, stylish clothes for self... that sort of thing.
I am staying in central Lisbon and mooching about on foot or metro.
Where should I shop? Are the 'handicraft' tourist shops still worth it?
Note - yes, I WILL be eating my body weight in fish, tarts & wine😁.

Hit me with your suggestions!
TIA

I'm from Lisbon although living in the UK for 20+ years. Let's see what I can contribute!

Soap and hand and body cream: not particularly portuguese things.... Parafarmacias have good selections, similar to the French ones. Wells is in all shopping centres. You'll find some fancy retro looking soaps in the tourist shops, like this one.

Bed linen: for really nice stuff, I'd go Paris em Lisboa, in Chiado or to El Corte Ingles (probably fewer portuguese things). If you'll have a car you could go to the outlet freeport, south of the river A few nice linen shops.

Tiles: probably a few in the tourist shops, not sure where else, but will have a think. Maybe the shop of the tile museum (museu do azulejo)!

Not sure about perfumes but if you walk around Chiado, bairro alto, principe real, you'll find nice quirky independent shops with original stuff

Hope this helps!

I got one of these www.libertylondon.com/uk/artichoke-dinner-plate-000608623.html for €25 in a ceramics shop in central Lisbon (and loads of other beautiful things, can't recall make of shop but look for Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics. Lovely stuff.

Shoes! Portugal makes amazing shoes and very cheap.

JulesJules · 15/12/2022 15:42

I love Claus Porto soaps.

AnnieKenney · 15/12/2022 15:52

Another vote for shoes - especially if you have particularly narrow or small feet. There's lots of shoe shops in central London but especially between Praca Figueira and Martim Moniz (and definitely check out the marble chess pieces on the platform at Martim Moniz)

You might want to check out A Vida Portuguesa

This is my favourite tile shop: Solar Antiques

Affordable ceramics here: Cerâmicas na Linha

And the most beautiful shopping centre in the world - totally comprised of independent shops - might be worth a look: Embaixada

Whoa! Thank you so much everybody. That is an amazing selection to work my way through. I have narrow feet so the tip about shoes is much appreciated.
The museu do azulejo is high on my list of 'must see' this time round as well as return visits to Sol e Pesca and Mercado da Ribeira. I can't wait. I bloody love Lisbon. Thanks again.

Mercado da Ribeira is lovely but quite touristy. For a more authentic version, try Mercado da Romeira on the other side of the river (get a ferry from Cais do Sodre - takes 10 minutes and you get great views of Lisbon from the opposite bank). Or you could try Mercado de Campo de Ourique

https://www.burelfactory.com/en/ Burel scarfs are lovely. Also loved A Vida Portuguesa, one stop shop of loveliness!

AnnieKenney · 16/12/2022 16:48

Meant to add, if you like Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics, try to fit in a visit to the Jardim Bordallo Pinheiro.

AnnieKenney · 16/12/2022 16:51

Lx Factory also worth a visit for lots of independent shops.

ichundich · 16/12/2022 16:57

Not sure, but if you're bringing these things back to Britain you might have to pay import tax on them, thanks to Brexit.

We went to Lisbon in May and it was such a lovely trip.

Claus Porto is just beautiful- there’s a lovely little shop and the shop assistants are really nice. There’s also a shop selling the most delicious ice cream next door, even for a non ice cream enthusiast like me.

A Vida Portuguesa sells a range of things all made in Portugal. I bought some stationery.
