What can I buy for my top half to keep me warm when WFH , that's smart enough for video calls?

I usually sit with my heated blanket over my knee and my dressing gown or a hoodie over my clothes.

I had a 2 hour workshop today though and needed to be in video. Dressing gown was definitely out, but also didn't feel the hoodie was smart enough or long/warm enough.

Any suggestions?

Thermal underwear.

Riverlee · 08/12/2022 18:12

Put a thermal on under a smarter shirt or jumper.

Falalalalaaah · 08/12/2022 18:14

Maybe a fine wool turtle neck with another fine wool thermal top underneath?

Tigofigo · 08/12/2022 18:15

Uniqlo heattech - can wear under a normal top or they do some nice high necked ones in various prints

Sarahcoggles · 08/12/2022 18:17

Polo neck jumper with thermals underneath

GetOffTheRoof · 08/12/2022 18:19

Another vote for thermals. And some nice jumpers. I bought a fab Sugarhill Brighton dinosaur jumper after a thread on here - the dino is at the waist, so on camera it's just a plain black jumper!

FinallyHere · 08/12/2022 18:23

Yes, thermals are the way forward here. I also have a full zip fleece that I wear usually not done up.

LlynTegid · 08/12/2022 19:27

Turtle neck or jumpers.

Or the cheaper option, oh dear my camera is broken. Which will miraculously be fixed once the weather is less cold.

LeakyTapTap · 08/12/2022 19:29

Land's End do fleece blazers which are warm but still smart.

bravelittletiger · 08/12/2022 19:31

I wear a gilet. You can either get a nice shaggy one, a smart outdoor one (like for horse riding) or a slim line thermal one like the ones from Uniqlo.

CMOTDibbler · 08/12/2022 19:32

I'm wearing a long vest (to fill in draughts at the back), long sleeved t shirt, and a Lands End fleece blazer today. On camera it looks like a regular jacket but is toasty warm. On regular days (I had a bigger customer meeting today) I wear a hoodie but put a scarf on for meetings with the hoody toggles tucked in, You wouldn't know it was a hoodie

bookmarket · 08/12/2022 19:38

Uniqlo heatech is so warm. Wear under a warm smarter jumper. You can get the thermal tops in scoop neck.

Yika · 08/12/2022 19:39

Polo neck jumper in pure wool. I have a fantastic merino wool M&S jumper that is unbelievably toasty - actually much warmer than cashmere.

i also have a boiled wool jacket that is extremely warm but smart.

Basically, wool everywhere. I also wear fine woollen tights instead of the usual Lycra to keep my legs warm.

what about a woven wool scarf or pashmina.

Daisy62 · 08/12/2022 20:55

As well as thermals and jumpers I have a charcoal poncho with a (not too tight) polo neck that looks reasonably smart - on screen it looks like a jumper. Very useful for throwing on over anything.

greenacrylicpaint · 08/12/2022 21:07

yes to thermal underwear. they are so thin you can wear anything above.
uniqlo heatech is great but outdoor stores are full of ski stuff atm which us similar.

silk is also very warm, if you have a silk blouse for example.

or the classic polo shirt under a smart jumper.

plus the heated blanket/hot water bottle on your lap. no one's going to see that.

emilydickinsonscat · 09/12/2022 23:26

I sit with a heated blanket on over my lap because I get so cold on work team calls.
My dog and cat resent me so much for having it for myself that I have to kick them out of the room when I have it on, otherwise we end up fighting over it!

Plus now I've just given up and have got the central heating on, I was getting too cold and miserable.

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 09/12/2022 23:33

Definitely wool

I have thin wool tops from celtic co that look like a normal top, then a wool cardi or jumper over the top. I even have merino joggers on the bottom half and merino leggings underneath them when it's really cold. Topped off with some wool socks.

This is the first year I've really got to this point and it's really made a difference. My office had been about 12-13 degrees all week because of an issue with the heating and I've been fine.

AinmÁlainn · 10/12/2022 00:05

How did I not know that Lands End fleece blazer exists? Ordered and waiting with bated breath.

I'm the coldest creature on the warmest of days but find thermals make me clammy rather than warm. I love a merino base layer though, uniqlo have lovely fine jumpers. I have about 5 in varying stages of worn out that go under everything. I also sit in a sleeping bag with a hot water bottle at my feet to keep them cosy. And a scarf, either silk or wool. Haven't cracked the cold hands though. Turtle doves wrist warmers help but don't cure it.

OldSpeclkledHen · 10/12/2022 10:15

Thermals and layer up!

boboshmobo · 10/12/2022 10:20

Heated gilet under a jumper . So find base layers are very warm though !

Falalalalaaah · 10/12/2022 10:52

What is a heated gilet? Does it have heating in it? If so, this sounds amazing and I need one

WhereAreWeNow · 10/12/2022 10:56

Thermals and layers. Uniqlo heat tech polo neck over another thermal layer. Then a wool polo neck on top. Plus electric blanket and hot water bottle!
Don't forget to wear warm socks and slippers too. If your feet are freezing you'll have no hope of keeping top half warm.

DiamondShape · 10/12/2022 10:59

Meriom will has been a life changer for me. Socks, tights, vest, cardigan. All fine and not bulky, smart looking and so much warmer than any synthetic fleece etc. Sheepskin slippers also lifechanging.

DiamondShape · 10/12/2022 10:59

FGS Merino wool!

JennyForeigner · 10/12/2022 11:11

I have a couple of beautiful kantha jackets from vinted and ebay. Super stylish but also naturally padded 😃
