Hairdresser- Cheap and Cheerful or Smart and Fancy?

Which is your salon?
I have just had a cut and blow dry at my local hairdressers and thinking how pleased I am with the cut. Shoulder length, bluntish cut, she took time to scalp massage and put in beach waves. I have been going to the same stylist for 3 or 4 years- she totally "gets" my hair- total cost ( including conditioning treatment, scalp massage - and coffee and biscuits) was £25.
I took an hour and 15 minutes.
The salon is a "Unisex", small town run of the mill salon, but I am always delighted with the result.
When I lived in the city and had more cash to spare I would easily pay £130 for same treatment- I was usually happy then too.
Tell me about your hairdresser- pricey? Run of the mill/ And how happy are you with the result?

I go to the local salon, have done for about 7 years - my hairdresser knows my hair better than her own. So cheap and cheerful for me, and very happy with the result. I've no desire to pay a fortune to have my hair done somewhere smart and fancy.

Lentilweaver · 03/12/2022 19:07

Mine is the cheap and cheerful local one. She knows my hair best, and I am quite happy. About £40 in London. When I go to expensive ones, they always try to change my hair and then if I am styling it on my own, I can't do it the same way.

DipmeinChoc · 03/12/2022 19:17

Local salon, owner & stylist. She always does a great job with my difficult hair, sometimes sticks on extra treatments or curls my hair for no extra charge. I go every three weeks for my roots and blowdry and costs me only £30. I love her.

CambsAlways · 03/12/2022 19:26

Local salon very pleased cut and blow dry takes 30 mins £35 always listens and advises , love going, we always have laugh she’s very bubbly,

I always went expensive, after a crap haircut at a high street hairdresser (Rush, I think) around ten years ago. Then my hairdresser at posh salan left. I worked my way round the other stylists for about a year. Prices now around £110 for a wash and haircut. But I wasn’t finding a stylist that I really liked (in fact, the last haircut, at £110, was so bad, I had to come back to get it tweaked).

Did some research, found a “local” salon on a pretty grim side road, about an hour away from me. Best hairdresser EVER! Vidal Sassoon trained. Charges £33 for a cut. I am so happy!

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 20:53

I go to a local salon. Full head highlights plus cut and blow dry is about £70

Itsbeenashortyear · 03/12/2022 20:54

My is cheap, local and cheerful. The salon is fairly smart, nice drinks etc. it’s a balance. I really like my hair dresser and found her on a recommendation. So I wasn’t attracted by the salon looks or even knew what it was like inside

RosesAndHellebores · 03/12/2022 20:57

I go to the local salon. In SW London cheap as chips at £160 for cut, colour and blow dry Grin. 2 miles further into London I am quite sure it would cost £300 a pop and not be as good.

OrangePomander · 03/12/2022 21:00

After many poor experiences I now go to a city-centre salon, £80 precision cut cut by the owner. Absolutely brilliant results, and I can go longer between visits because the style is better. Also a major advantage is that it only takes 30 minutes and they are always on time. Definitely worth it for me.

JadeSeahorse · 03/12/2022 21:01

I found my hairdresser through my DH years ago as she is also a master barber and has a small unisex salon in the village.
I recently became a pensioner for whom she only charges half price. DH - an older pensioner 😄 - and I always go together and total for 2 dry cuts should be £12 at half price. I always give her £20 as she is excellent and £12 is way too cheap in my opinion and especially for someone so highly qualified.
£20 still an absolute bargain!

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 04/12/2022 07:26

Well if anyone can recommend somewhere in South Croydon area I’d be all over you, I’ve lived here nearly 20 years and still cut my hair myself most of the time as I’ve not found a good place.

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/12/2022 07:57

Cheap and cheerful. £27 for a cut and blow dry in central London

one of the best cuts I ever had was a free one at Toni and Guy training salon. The novice made a complete mess and the supervisor had to rescue it, took about 5 minutes and looked amazing!

Roselilly36 · 04/12/2022 08:08

One thing I really, really miss since moving is my hairdresser, she was fab, been going to her for years, knew my hair, and I was always pleased with it.

I now live 3.5hrs away, in a big city, been an absolute disaster trying to find a new hairdresser, first one, cut my hair so badly, I looked like a frightened rabbit with a very severe fringe, burnt me twice with the straighteners, I wanted to run out of there screaming.

Second one, better, nice cut & highlights, but, she didn’t actually blow dry with hair with a brush, used used the dryer to rough dry, then straighten, I could do that myself at home.

3rd hairdresser, a man this time, just walked in and he could do it straight away, very pleased with the cut, blowing drying etc, however the salon was closing, he took my number to say when they got new premises he would let me know, not heard a word so the search continues!

Newlifenewme · 04/12/2022 15:35

Cheap and cheerful here. The salon looks like it’s in a time warp stuck in the 80s. However, the hairdresser is amazing, super skilled and does a fab job everytime. She charges £50 for a wash, cut, colour and blowdry and she’s lovely (which helps) I get a cup of tea and the latest magazines.

a salon at the other end of the street I can get a colour and cut with no conversation and the magazines are 2 years out of date for £120 but it’s ‘trendy’. Always packed. I don’t get it lol

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 04/12/2022 19:27

My current salon (and I’ve been to a few) is cheap and cheerful but not too cheap (they opened a year ago) and lots of experience.

They charge I think approx £130 for full head of highlights and cut but aren’t in a posh part of London and I think they’ve priced themselves quite right if you consider other salons charge much more, I think they use organic, vegan colours and products too.

Roselovescoffee · 04/12/2022 20:22

@Matchingcollarandcuffs Not quite South Croydon, but Dtail in Caterham is brilliant and reasonably priced too!

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 04/12/2022 21:12

@Roselovescoffee ooh thank you, can get there easily enough

Hi roses, pl would you let me know the name of your salon? I’m also in SW London and looking for somewhere decent. PM me if you prefer. Many thanks!

Coxspurplepippin · 04/12/2022 23:57

Long term hairdresser, £15 for a dry cut, no faffing, 20 minutes every 3 months or so, brilliant.

Recently moved and first attempt at a hair cut in local salon £38 and didn't look as if she'd done anything. Second attempt, £19 in supercuts and happy with result.

I'm not a natural client in the world of hairdressing Grin

Spaceprincess · 07/12/2022 08:38

North Yorkshire Market town (not posh), pay £65 for all over colour cut and finish.
Have been going to the same place for 16 years. Salon is modern and staff are lovely. I have paid more than double in Leeds and not liked it as much.

Deathraystare · 09/12/2022 17:53

Mine is around £80 for cut/colour/blow dry (West London). The most I have spent but used to pay £6 for a haircut! However, I am trying to look smarter, etc etc and had just checked as I thought the hairdressers in my local tube station would be cheaper for a colour,,,er nope so I am going back to my usual one thank you!

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2022 19:46

Local for me, but not any old local. I need someone who understands how my hair behaves.

BamBamBilla · 09/12/2022 19:51

Cheap and cheerful in rural town. I get a dry cut which is literally just a trim and takes about 10 minutes max. £15.

Squirrelsnut · 09/12/2022 19:55

I go to a Cutting Shed no frills place and it's fine. I hate spending £40 to have half an inch trimmed off.

WillMellorsHips · 09/12/2022 20:01

If i could go to a cheap and cheerful and get the same result then I would but that is not my experience. It's not about being smart and fancy it is about the skill and techniques involved. I'm in the SE near London so yes it is expensive but I value the result.
