If you own balenciaga stuff will you still wear/use it?

I treat myself to a few things for Christmas before this shit show came to light. I never buy designer, these are the only designer items I have and now they will forever be associated with paedophiles. I'm gutted.

It's a black and white scarf with 'balenciaga' all over it, a black patent handbag with the trademark 'B' and a pair of summer slides with 'balenciaga' across them.

I'll get in touch with them today and see if they'll accept the items back but I'm not hopeful.

I always could use the slides as slippers in the house as a last resort but would feel far too self conscious wearing that scarf anywhere now.

I would send it back anyway with a letter saying you no longer want their products in your home. If it's too late for a return it will send an even more powerful message. Admittedly I don't own any Balenciaga so it's easy for me to pontificate but that's what I hope I would do. I don't have many ethics but child abuse is a line in the sand.

queenofarles · 01/12/2022 09:48

I keep seeing talk of people donating their balenciaga items to the homeless,
that’s just bonkers ,
Demna has always glamorised poverty.
I wouldn’t use the homeless dire deprivation to clear my conscious.

Why do you associate bondage with paedophillia? It's a genuine question ⁉️

Did you see the ads? They had kids in them

Stop feeding the publicity machine

Stop feeding the publicity machine

Ridiculous

JustCakeInDrag · 01/12/2022 09:55

I'm cynical but the current outrage won't last long. People have shamefully short memories and there will be some sort of discreet campaign to start rehabilitating the brand before long - see Kim K's slippery statement from earlier in the week. You'll be able to sell the items and recoup some of your costs. As JKR says to people who threaten to burn her books, they already have your money.

Gazelda · 01/12/2022 09:56

@user829472746 aren't you uncomfortable with the children in the images? And the book that's in the pics that contains very unpleasant drawings of children in exploited situations? And the court papers?

Surely you agree that children have been exploited for dramatic effect?

AuntyPeanut · 01/12/2022 10:02

@user829472746 are you ok?

Latenightponderings · 01/12/2022 10:26

It's not about bondage itself, but the fact they think it's acceptable to use children in the campaign to advertise it the way they have. The court documents about child abuse images. A child posed laying on their stomach on a sofa surrounded by empty wine glasses and a bondage teddy bear placed next to the child's rear end. The executive designer has images on her social media of children gagged and bound to a chair. Baby dolls covered in what is supposed to be blood.

The whole thing is just seedy.

Stop feeding the publicity machine if anything the publicity machine is quite underwhelming ,
nothing about that AD campaign was an innocent mistake , everything was purposefully Researched and placed,
The court documents, the framed degree certificate of John Phillip Fisher, Boremanns book, it’s a recurring theme in all slides of the campaign.

I wonder if Chanel or Hermes did something like that under a new disaster designer (which can happen!), what would happen to all the 2:55s or the Birkins? Definitely puts me off designer as for me, an expensive designer item is to be used and enjoyed for years. But yet you have no control over their brand identity. At least with mid range clothes, they generally would be worn until they have holes in them for me but I would have zero qualms giving them to charity. And luxury makeup would be used up anyway. I have a Senreve backpack but to me that is accessible luxury. They also don't have designers, the owners are very prim looking American Chinese ladies.

crownandfillers · 01/12/2022 10:46

I have the knitted trainer and haven't been wearing it since this shit show. Honestly I feel guilty to wear it. I have a son probably the same age as the little girl in the photoshoot. I don't know what to do with it, I'll probably try to sell it or eventually throw it or would have loved to be able to throw it through their shop windows. I wonder if Harrods and Selfridges would cut their ties with them as well.

queenofarles · 01/12/2022 11:05

this is where social media driven by young influencers is so hypocritical.
Chanel & Dior are constantly criticised under their new designers ,
Chanel was mercilessly mocked for their N5 Advent Calendar on SM ,
true it was rubbish but then Chanel doesn’t appeal to the TT generation ,

more so , it’s far more expensive than Brands like Balenciaga , Jacquemus and Balmain which is so accessible to young people.

SM can’t decide how we should react based on their interest .
,

queenofarles · 01/12/2022 11:08

which are appealing not is

janet0001 · 01/12/2022 11:23

Absolutely not. If I saw someone wearing balenciaga now I would seriously question their integrity.

NalaNana · 01/12/2022 11:31

Honestly I'd probably still wear it if I liked it 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I don't think the situation is as bad as it's been made out to be, or maybe I've just missed things. I've seen the ads referred to as child porn etc and I just don't think it's anywhere near child pornography. Controversial probably, but outrage is contagious these days. I think it'll all blow over by next year.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 01/12/2022 11:41

I hope people who are prepared to take all sorts of "action" in response to a badly planned and problematic photo editorial are also prepared to take the same type and level of "action" in response to other more prevalent and distressing forms of child abuse which are happening in their own communities right now. You know, like fundraising, volunteering, assisting with structured campaigns to... oh, wait, they're just here for the drama and performative indignation? Ok.

Fairy22 · 01/12/2022 11:50

I think the devil worship seen in that TikTok video is far worse. Really creepy

Fairy22 · 01/12/2022 11:53

This is a photo from it

Far more disturbing than the teddy bear

If you own balenciaga stuff will you still wear/use it?
BuryingAcorns · 01/12/2022 11:56

I'm confused. Are they actually known paedophiles or did they just create an ad in really poor taste?

queenofarles · 01/12/2022 12:06

BuryingAcorns
i don’t know,

about the Spring 23 campaign
part of me thinks they were creating a story, lawyers in their offices, they were handling child exploitation cases, but they were <the lawyers> not innocent themselves, the hidden books and The framed degree,
it’s quite sick and twisted .

MarshaMelrose · 01/12/2022 12:25

How is anything in that tik tok photo demonic? 🙄 It's like going back to medieval times where anyone could make shit up and no one questioned what they've being told. It's just jumping on one outraged bandwagon which will be abandoned as soon as another outraged bandwagon passes by.
