Pushing 40 - I’m too old for this aren’t I?

Greatlyloomband · 27/11/2022 21:37

When I was actually young I had very little interest in what I wore and I am sad about it now!
I think I am probably just in mourning for my youth.

I like the fashion of wearing long stretchy boot and a shortish skirt. I’m too old aren’t I? I am size 6-8 but not that toned so probably still don’t look great.
id wear with black tights so I wouldn’t have my legs out.

It’s never been my style but if it’s something you’ve always liked or wanted, give it a go. If not now, when? It sounds like you have the figure for it. Also, you’re not old.

Leading · 27/11/2022 21:40

God no. You are not too old and please ignore those who say you are.

Also - anyone, regardless of size, is not too old for this.

Whatnextarghhhhhh · 27/11/2022 21:41

I wear flat over the knee suede boots with short skirts and black tights. I’m early 40s.

Couldn’t give a toss if anything things I look to old for them, I like them!

Ohmygoshposh · 27/11/2022 21:41

What type of boot? Over the knee?

I’m 40 with good, toned legs. I still wear mini skirts with thick black tights. I wear them with chunky ankle boots, brogues, or high top trainers.

I’m not sure what kind of boots you mean - I wouldn’t wear over the knee boots myself, but that’s just because I dislike them, not due to age.

Leading · 27/11/2022 21:41

No-one is too old. Grammar!

WordtoYoMumma · 27/11/2022 21:42

I don't believe in being too old for clothing. If you like it, wear it!

FinallyHere · 27/11/2022 22:28

If I can wear high waisted leather look leggings at my age and no one has arrested me yet there is nothing stopping you wearing anything you fancy.

NoCoatAndFurKnickers · 27/11/2022 23:09

I'll be 40 next year and way bigger than you are. I would wear flat knee boots and a short(ish) skirt, as long as it was with opaque tights. Not sure what stretch boots are tbh, so can't comment on that and it would be a cold day in hell before you'd see me in a micro mini (I'm tall and leggy so this always looks terrible on me), but I definitely don't feel too old for knee boots and a skirt which doesn't reach the top of the boots

Fizzadora · 27/11/2022 23:14

I am 62 5ft 3 and a size 16/18 and wear flat knee high boots with leggings, shortish skirts and a tunic top when I go out (I have to get some wear out of those work clothes I bought just before they offered me early retirement).
I think I look OK but I really don't care if I don't because actually no one's looking at me anyway.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 28/11/2022 07:50

This combo will look cute and fresh on a young woman, but will date you, unless you update the look somehow.

Before the (inevitable) pile on: This is not about short skirts and old legs by any means It's just that wearing something from the pinnacle of your youth makes you look like your style has not evolved and you're trying too hard to hang on to YOUR heyday, like that woman in the green t shirt in the detergent ad, pretending she's still "got it".

For instance, if I wore a global hypercolour t shirt, I'd look ridiculous (and frumpy, yes I know this word is forbidden too), but DDs would look cute and cool. This is why I avoid buying any item with "Y2K" in the description.

Whataretheodds · 28/11/2022 08:23

You're not too old but the look you're describing isn't the height of fashion (regrettably as i love it).

Wearing knee-highs with a midi or long skirt, or short skirt with ankle or calf boots is much more in.

Justthisonce12 · 28/11/2022 08:34

It comes down to whose opinion do you care about? I think you are too old to wear it, but do you care what I think

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 28/11/2022 08:37

Wear whatever the hell you like op!

Motorina · 28/11/2022 08:41

Well, I'm 10 years older than you and I wear it, so....

(Mind, I haven't a clue about fashion, so don't ask me.)

PinkSyCo · 28/11/2022 08:43

40 is not old these days, and even if it were you should feel free to wear what the hell you want!

This is right sorry. You are fine to get your legs out but do it with a clumpy DM style boot. Personally I can't wear midis with knee high boots as it makes me look dumpy.

I am rather imagining you either mean pretty woman boots (jesus, no) or possibly you mean flat and clumpy but above the knee boots with short skirts in Japanese anime character style which is a look that you could probably own being so petite.

HelloGooodBye · 28/11/2022 08:45

You aren't too old and decent quality tights hide untoned legs so you're good to go.

Garysmum · 28/11/2022 08:50

I think there is nothing wrong with this look even into your 60s. It's about wearing the right boots, maybe opaques in winter and having a good skirt that's short but more than a pelmet.
I am probably twice your size at a 14 with solid legs - and I can do this look too.

NoMoreAgeJokes · 28/11/2022 08:54

I’d say give it a go - as you’re so slim I’m sure you’ll look great.

If you don’t do it now you’ll probably keep wanting to try the look out and be asking the same question when you’re “pushing 50” 😀.

That’s my excuse anyway for revisiting styles of earlier decades (I’m pushing 60)

Floisme · 28/11/2022 09:01

I don't post on threads like this as often as I used to because they depress me too much. But what took my eye was when you said you regretted not taking more of an interest in what you wore when you were younger. It sounds like your inner you is trying to tell you something and I think it's worth listening.

I can't tell you whether this look will suit you or not because I don't know. I don't think people who are interested in clothes are always the best dressers from a purist point of view. I find they're more likely to experiment, ignore the style rules, and sometimes get it wrong. I'm certainly like that. But this is how you learn.

You might look fabulous in this outfit or you might not. But, if it doesn't work out, no-one is hurt - you find the outfit another home, you move on and put what you've learnt to good use next time, and the worst that can happen is that you'll occasionally come across pics of yourself in that outfit and have a good laugh. It's fun and mistakes are sometimes the biggest fun of all.

Alternatively you can ignore that inner voice for another 40 years. Your call.

Stripedbag101 · 28/11/2022 09:04

you aren’t dressing for other people, you are dressing for yourself.

if it makes you feel good and confident then go for it.

but if the clothes are making you feel self conscious then explore why that is.

we spend too much time worrying what other people think, and there are some judgemental arseholes out there! Why do you care what they think.

WakingUpDistress · 28/11/2022 09:14

Oh fgs, just wear what you want!

The whole ‘I’m too old/not toned enough etc…’ is all in your head. I mean look at celebrities. Do they stop wearing shirt skirt because they’ve turned 40yo? NO.

Just go for it and enjoy it.

WakingUpDistress · 28/11/2022 09:17

Also, I wouldn’t listen to what ‘fashion is’.

Fashion won’t always suit you and your body shape. It might not be something you like.
Dont be ruled by fashion. Just wear what you enjoy, what fits you the best, what is the most comfortable for you at this moment.

id say 40yo is the right time to stop being a slave of ‘what will people think’ and start do things for yourself instead.

1983Louise · 28/11/2022 09:17

Age doesn't matter, my daughter borrows clothes from my wardrobe and I'm sixty next year. If you think you're old at nearly 40 you'll never do anything. I'm looking forward to starting paddle boarding next summer. My friend's 63 and goes clubbing every weekend, age is but a number 😊

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 28/11/2022 09:46

I've just turned 40. I mostly wear short skirts, thick tights and boots in winter.

The only difference age makes is that we tend to realise that a skirt so short that you risk showing your backside off isn't a good look. Nor is a top so low cut that it leaves little to the imagination and pairing the two together is a definite no.

As long as I'm covering the important bits I'll be wearing what I want forever!
