How much do I need to spend on hair straighteners?

Sh4rkAttack · 24/11/2022 10:47

My daughter has asked for some 'good' ones - though tbh her only comparison is some she picked up at a car boot sale a few years ago, so I think she might just mean 'ones that work'. I am completely clueless, never having spent more than 30 seconds at a time tending to my hair, but a quick amazon search shows a massive price range, and I've no idea where to start. What's the least I can spend without getting something that'll be rubbish? Any particular recommendations? She's going to be 15, and has long, fairly thick, wavy hair. TIA.

I'd tell her to embrace her wavy locks. Smile

Sh4rkAttack · 24/11/2022 10:52

I've tried that!!! Didn't get me anywhere 😀

Mine were £30? I think. Better than my old Cloud 9s (£120ish?)

I was at the hairdressers getting my hair done a few weeks ago and noticed the straighteners she was using on me were amazing, I asked her what kind they were and they were £25 Remingtons! She agreed some of the cheaper ones were miles better than the expensive brands.

Don't look at the price, just look at the reviews!

Sorry, don't know how to shorten link, these are the ones I have and they've never failed me! £20 on Amazon Black Friday deals at the moment.

Milknosugarta · 24/11/2022 11:00

I've got GHD, they're good. Get her some heat protection spray, too. They can damage your hair if used too much.

Flowerfairy101 · 24/11/2022 11:01

The only ones that work properly for me are GHD, tried babyliss as a teen, they barely did anything on my frizzy/wavy hair.

Malabarhouse · 24/11/2022 11:13

I have Kipozi straighteners from Amazon. They were recommended on here. They're well priced and work really well. Currently on a Black Friday deal of £22. No complaints

Sh4rkAttack · 24/11/2022 11:22

Thanks for these suggestions. I'm very relieved to hear that I don't need to spend £££!

Glamoriser straighteners are good. GHD are the best if you want to splash out.
I personally found Remington ones the worst for either snagging hair or packing up!

fruitsaladsweets · 24/11/2022 11:34

I have GHD straighteners which are the only straighteners I've ever owned. I've had them about 15 years and they are going strong. Buying cheap can be a false economy as they break.

Spaceprincess · 24/11/2022 12:41

I also have the Velvet Orchid Babyliss ones, bought as emergency replacements for my GHDs I accidentally left at my boyfriend's house 100 miles away.
The GHDs are still there now!

NeedWineNow · 24/11/2022 14:10

I've got GHD straighteners which I use regularly. DH bought them for me around 7/8 years ago, have been chucked in suitcases, hand luggage etc whilst travelling, and are still going strong. I've also got a pair of Murphy Richards ones that I got years ago and which I used to keep in my locker at work for emergencies and nights out. Affectionately referred to as the Team Straighteners as everyone used them. Again they are still going strong but don't get as hot as my GHDs so it takes a little more time when using them.

I'd happily get either make again.

NeedWineNow · 24/11/2022 14:12

'Morphy Richards' not Murphy!

This! Always go for the best you can afford, but if you can’t afford loads don’t sweat it.

I love my GHDs too - I didn’t get a set til I was in my mid-30s but 5yrs later they’re going strong.

Redken One United is a great all round protection spray - about £12 on Amazon.

StillMedusa · 24/11/2022 16:25

My GHDs are 15 years old and still work perfectly. Sometimes things are worth the money. (that and my Macbook which is 12 and refuses to die Halloween Grin)

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/11/2022 16:29

I have got some Remington ones. Think they cost me £25 or £30. Better than my mate's GHDs she let me try (on my thick curly hair). Also I know Remington as a long standing brand and they have a guarantee etc.

whoruntheworldgirls · 24/11/2022 16:29

I had GHD platinum and they literally blew up while using them, orange spark, a bang, smoke and tripped electrics, my hairdresser said some models are made cheap now so need to be careful.
After that i bought the Lloreal Steampod 2.0 and it's brilliant, no more burned hair smell, straightens better and hair feels healthier. It was expensive though.

LunchBoxPolice · 24/11/2022 16:31

I’ve had my god’s for about 10 years and they’re still like new. I use them almost every day, so while they are a bit pricey the cost per use is excellent.

TattiePants · 24/11/2022 16:59

I’ve been using straighteners for 25-30 years and only ever bought cheap ones and I’m still on my second ever pair. The first pair came from a hairdresser supplies shop for about £30 and my current pair were a similar price (Remington or Babylon’s).

wasiwrongtoask · 24/11/2022 19:02

@whoruntheworldgirls have fancied the steampods for a while now, are they really worth the money?

princessbear80 · 24/11/2022 19:06

I have quite thick, wavy hair. I’ve had GHDs and Remington ones, and can’t say I noticed much difference between the two.

Outofnowhere · 24/11/2022 19:18

When my GHDs died, I got a pair of Remington ones for about £23 and they were brilliant and just as good as the GHDs. Had them years and I still use them.

IfCanCanICan · 24/11/2022 19:24

I'm just going to echo what everyone else has said really... I had GHDs for close to 15 years, cost a lot, have obviously been worth it. When they broke last week, I got the only pair available in the local B&M to see me through til I can justify buying more GHDs. They're £20 Remington ones and they're perfectly fine. I'm not going to bother paying out for more expensive ones now.

I remember in the olden days the metal plated ones that would feel like they were ripping your hair out. They've come a long way since then!

I love them, I took the side comb off as found it got in the way, you need special water, deionised or something (can check) but I think they straighten my hair better than GHD’s did, no burned hair smell with these either and the steam is making my hair feel better. Pre straightening it’s very fluffy, lots of kinks. It is heavier than GHD which takes getting used to. Really happy with them.

I did the same. Perfectly happy with my cheap Remingtons.
