This dress - Yay or Nay?

I usually buy more figure-hugging dresses so I don't know if this is OK? Is it the style that's like this or does it look like I'm wearing a tent?

I like it from the front but I've attached an example of how it can look bad from certain angles.

It's size XS which makes me think it's supposed to be like this?

It's the comfiest dress ever so I'd like to keep it but not if people think it makes me look like a clown.

Voluminous dresses have been fashionable for at least two or three years now. Have some of you really not noticed?

Yes. They look awful.

TheOGCCL · 15/11/2022 08:41

The second one looks ill fitting and like you are trussed up. The first one is better. It’s a modern shape. Good to show with shoes/boots as they can really affect the mood of an outfit.

Zipps · 15/11/2022 08:42

You look like you would look good in most things... the first doesn't look great to me it's not a good fit and a bit scruffy. I prefer more fitted stuff so would go for the second plus I think it looks better quality.

MistyRock · 15/11/2022 08:43

'Voluminous dresses have been fashionable for at least two or three years now. Have some of you really not noticed?'
Yes, I have noticed but I personally do not find them attractive, I also dislike midi and maxi dresses. I wouldn't wear any of these types of dresses. Dresses below the knees remind me of my mother. Oversize dresses to me, look like someone who lacks confidence and wants to hide away. Maybe it's my age? I just can't get on board with it. I'm not saying these things are true for every wearer. But for me they are all a big no.

AppleCrumbleRumble · 15/11/2022 08:49

I think if you have a minimiser bra or even a sports bra to squish your breasts it looks better with flared tiered dresses like this one as the flare starts high up. as a busty woman this style is tricky unless he tiers star lower than waist for me and I make sure I don't wear bras that give too much forward projection.

YayorNay1 · 15/11/2022 09:27

Thank you, I love the input! I think ultimately everyone is saying the same thing, the first one is more what's in style now but about 50% of posters don't like that style. So I'm still on the fence.

The problem is that to pull it off I think you need to look confident and fashionable and I am neither. I never wear make up either so perhaps it will overall not look great on me. I have spent ages online and even had a personal stylist session at John Lewis last weekend and could not find a dress :(

Love the first one on you but the second is a no from me, it looks unflattering and awkward
Love the first one though

Afterfire · 15/11/2022 09:35

The first one is more fashionable but being really honest it makes you (not you personally, anyone really) look a bit pregnant. It’s the sort of thing I would have worn in the early stages of pregnancy 🙈 but - lots of people are wearing them and with some chunky boots you’d look very “in” / on trend or whatever.

Brandymakesmerandy · 15/11/2022 09:37

It looks nice as a casual thing to wear nowhere special

AppleCrumbleRumble · 15/11/2022 09:37

I think if you're not comfortable in it, it will show in your body language and movement. Perhaps try something trendy in your accessories or footwear instead of a dress if it feels too much of a change. I think you might suit lighter more neutral colours than black and navy you seem like a spring season or summer.

eggsandbaconeveryday · 15/11/2022 09:38

The first dress looks great but the second one actually looks too big on you. I think this kind of dress is all about how you choose to style it- some funky boots and coloured tights would look great .Personally I always feel that black needs another colour with it to help lift it

MenopauseMavis · 15/11/2022 09:39

I think it looks like a maternity dress.

Bollocks2that · 15/11/2022 09:51

Ok here's my take:
Dress one: you wear it well, it looks lovely face on but still looks a bit maternity wear especially side on. It's nice however.
Dress two: seems a bit heavy at the chest area due to the pockets. It's ok. You have a nice figure but the dresses aren't doing you justice.
What body shape would you say you were?
Are you inverted triangle?

Zipps · 15/11/2022 11:14

You are confusing style with trends.
Style does not need fashion to tell it what to wear.

I like this.

DeoForty · 15/11/2022 12:11

I think a previous poster has hit upon why the first one isn't quite doing it. I think it needs to hang from the shoulder but yours is hanging from the boobs. As they said it might be the bra, or you might have bigger boobs. I'd try it with a different bra. Failing that, what about a calf length sweatshirt dress. Kin or Thought have them - if it's the oversized look you want.

You look nice in it and I'd wear it. Considering you got it for a bargain price how about wearing it a few times and seeing whether you like it or not. It's a fairly low risk strategy. I have a few similar dresses and if I feel like it's a bit voluminous I use a belt with it (generally quite high up under my ribcage).

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/11/2022 12:55

The first one seems to be fashionable at the moment. I think it looks like a smock and it would look terrible on me. Compared to the shirt dress, it doesn't flatter your figure and makes you look bigger that you are. The shirt dress is a bit less casual in style, but you could turn the cuffs back and style it to make it more casual.

Swampthing55 · 15/11/2022 12:56

It's not flattering I would wear it round the house, not out tho

Fashion is how style evolves over time.

Otherwise we’d all still be preening in our bearskin capes …

Numbat2022 · 15/11/2022 13:21

The first one looks fine. Not amazing, i's nothing special in itself, but it's a fashionable shape and looks current, especially worn with chunky boots. If you like it and it's comfy wear it.

The second one doesn't suit you, it's too bulky around the shoulders.

How about a slightly more fitted jumper dress, as it's almost winter?

MistyRock · 15/11/2022 14:21

Jumper dresses are lovely.

Because not everyone has to dress like a mannequin to feel good about themselves? Because figure hugging stuff looks quite shit in its own way? Because life is about more than what you look like? Because 'frumpy' is a misogynistic slur used to make women feel bad?

This is an interesting comment and also some others on this thread. We all still have it ingrained that we need to make the best of our assets and disguise bits and emphasise others. We've come so far and yet barely evolved at all from the days of corsets. Sometimes what we choose to wear can say something other than 'look at my figure'.

Iamthewombat · 15/11/2022 14:38

The only way dress #1 is going to look good is in summer, with bare legs and sandals. With opaque tights etc it’s too much fabric and will make you look like a toadstool on a stem. You can do better.

Dress #2 is just yawn. It’s the sort of thing people wear to work when they have to look a bit smart but don’t want anyone to think that they have made too much of an effort.
