This dress - Yay or Nay?

I usually buy more figure-hugging dresses so I don't know if this is OK? Is it the style that's like this or does it look like I'm wearing a tent?

I like it from the front but I've attached an example of how it can look bad from certain angles.

It's size XS which makes me think it's supposed to be like this?

It's the comfiest dress ever so I'd like to keep it but not if people think it makes me look like a clown.

Love the first one, I agree with you about the 2nd one, it's more funerally. I love the style of the first one for everyday wear, comfort is a bonus!

Paq · 14/11/2022 18:16

It's a question of style. The first makes you look enormous compared to the second but that's what some people like apparently.

strawberriesplease · 14/11/2022 21:39

Shapeless and frumpy. Why hide yourself like that?

starsareblazing · 14/11/2022 21:54

I love the first one!

Fairyliz · 15/11/2022 06:52

Sorry but I think the first one is a bit shapeless and hides your lovely figure. It’s the sort of thing I assume someone would wear in the first few months of pregnancy before they went into proper maternity wear.
The second one just looks a bit dull. Can you find anything a bit brighter?
Disclaimer I am not a fashionista so feel free to ignore me.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 15/11/2022 06:57

I like the first one. I hate the idea that a great dress is one that makes you look slim.

Swissnotswiss · 15/11/2022 06:59

Shapeless and frumpy. Why hide yourself like that?

Yep. Sorry.

SuffolkBargeWoman · 15/11/2022 07:08

There's no obligation to 'show your figure' or avoid clothes that are 'shapeless' .
You are more than the size of your waist!
PP saying it is frumpy are actually saying you should look sexy at all times. Why?
If you like it and it's comfortable don't discard it because it doesn't advertise your sexiness.
(But maybe look for companies that don't have such dreadful business practices!)

Indoctro · 15/11/2022 07:08

First one isn't nice on you, it's just hangs like a shapeless sack

I'm not a fan of styles like that, 2nd looks nice on you.

dudsville · 15/11/2022 07:21

Very different styles! I'm a bit fan of the casual dress. They can be flattering, but i think yours might be better after it's washed and ironed, so that it hangs properly. Problem with that is by that time you're committed to owning it.

The second one is a more familiar, traditional shape, known to be flattering.

Dacadactyl · 15/11/2022 07:25

The first one does nothing for your figure.

I like the 2nd one shape wise but it is too black.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/11/2022 07:41

I think getting your head round new styles in clothing can take a while.

Anyone can intuit from the first photo that you are slim, even though the shape of the dress is large ( if that's what's worrying you.)

Comfort definitely has a place in dresses!

I'm not a fan of the belt on the second one as it makes your body look rectangular rather than hourglass ( which to me is the intention of belts on dresses). It looks like a safe office dress.

VanCleefArpels · 15/11/2022 07:44

First is more contemporary. Second is frumpy but might look better with a leather belt instead of the self tie belt.

AppleCrumbleRumble · 15/11/2022 07:46

The first one is better than the second because the second dress looks too baggy and ill fitting. The first dress I would not wear black tights with it but charcoal or even crochet/lace type pattern of black tights and boots with a long pendant necklace to reach the point where there is that empire waist/first tier happening sort of around your sternum. If the sleeves come down or you could layer a top underneath in charcoal or mustard it would look better as I feel the sleeves length is awkward. I would wear a beret, too and ankle or midcalf boots. maybe bracelets as well, no or minimal earrings.

Bootoagoose123 · 15/11/2022 07:49

I think both are lovely! You look great in them!

Yarrawonga · 15/11/2022 07:50

I’m not keen on ether of them. The second is marginally better.

rainbowstardrops · 15/11/2022 07:51

I really like the first one and it suits you! The second one is quite nice too but I prefer the first one.

Yourloss · 15/11/2022 07:53

Not keen on either sorry.

Yourloss · 15/11/2022 07:53

Does the first one need ironing? It might look better.

icelollycraving · 15/11/2022 07:54

I’m not keen on either tbh. The first reminds me of loads of things aimed at my size (20-22) that I don’t buy.

carefulcalculator · 15/11/2022 07:57

strawberriesplease · 14/11/2022 21:39

Shapeless and frumpy. Why hide yourself like that?

Because not everyone has to dress like a mannequin to feel good about themselves? Because figure hugging stuff looks quite shit in its own way? Because life is about more than what you look like? Because 'frumpy' is a misogynistic slur used to make women feel bad?

NeedToKnow101 · 15/11/2022 07:58

I like it and have one similar 😃

carefulcalculator · 15/11/2022 08:00

The first one looks nice. It looks like a comfortable dress and nothing someone in XS wears would ever look like a tent.

The second one, to me, looks too buttoned up and austere and less relaxed.

MistyRock · 15/11/2022 08:15

I do not like the first one and I'm not keen on the 2nd, but I prefer fitted clothes.

CountryCousin · 15/11/2022 08:32

A miserable person might be moved to wonder exactly what the point of a Style & Beauty board could be, when most of those posting on it have no idea whatsoever about what is currently in style. Halloween Grin

Fortunately I’m a cheerful person, so 🤷🏽‍♀️ …

Voluminous dresses have been fashionable for at least two or three years now. Have some of you really not noticed? (Why would anyone come onto a thread about getting dressed in the 21st century if you haven’t taken any notice of contemporary clothing since 1980???)

The first dress the OP shows is a ‘trickled down’ version of the oversized trend. I imagine she would like her new wardrobe to illustrate that she has the opposite of a ‘dull and frumpy’ mind.
