Perimenopausal hotness - what do you wear?

Littlemiss74 · 12/11/2022 16:34

Am perimenopausal and get hot (& bothered!) easily. I love all the chunky oversized jumpers & cardigans around but even touching most of them in the shop makes me feel hot!
I’ve always found wool & other materials that are made to look like wool & now I’m even worse as start to feel warm and just want to rip it off which makes me grumpy!😩
What do other people buy in winter? I went to Zara and saw some lovely jumpers & cardis that I would love to be able to wear but I know they will just irritate me.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Long sleeved tops and thin layers in cotton, silk etc - couldn’t wear a chunky jumper just now if you paid me! I swear I glow in the dark, lol

5128gap · 12/11/2022 16:52

I thought this was going to be about what we wear to look hot. 😊

crochetmeahat · 12/11/2022 16:52

Vests are the way forward eg under a dress

Littlemiss74 · 12/11/2022 17:13

@5128gap yes I need that advice too!🤣

@Purplecatshopaholic where do you get yours from? I’ve got some long sleeve cotton tops ‘basics’ from places like H&M & Sainsburys but I just feel so boring & a bit frumpy when I wear them. They always seem to be in black, white, navy, grey none of which are really my colours - I’m

😂.
Natural fibres all the way. Layers, short sleeved cotton T shirt under a cardigan. Dress plus small cardi.

Petit Bateau have quite few Tees in autumn colouring this season. Unfortunately I am a summer.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/11/2022 00:09

Can’t help on the colours front @Littlemiss74 as I’m a Winter and wear black/white/grey most of the time! I like places like asos, and John Lewis, that do a range of brands, then I religiously check what the piece is made of before I buy it and avoid manmade fabrics like the plague!

Silverstreaks · 13/11/2022 09:18

I pretty much lived in coloured cotton vests from Primark for years. With a range of light to chunky cardigans depending on the time of year.

Cardis are quick to take off and easy to put back on. The key to dealing with a flush is how quickly you can cool down.

If it's particularly cold a silk scarf on your neck can also be whipped off in a flash.

Lentilweaver · 13/11/2022 09:22

Oh yes, I need to know this. Was eyeing a lovely chunky jumper in the shops but I know I will just get overheated. I have been buying some pure cotton v necked jumpers( am small busted).

pharmachameleon · 13/11/2022 10:00

I know this isn't what you are asking but I would have thought HRT would regulate your body temperature and you wouldn't have flushes/hotness. I am on it and never feel hot. Ignore me if this isn't an option!

QueenOfTheMetaverse · 13/11/2022 10:20

I am finding the commute v hard as it's boiling on the train - it's the hot cold hot cold I find difficult!

Layers are your friend. I wear a suit to work but wear a T shirt and take off my jacket/coat the minute I get on the train. I think it's layering that's important and trying to take stuff off before you know it will be hot!

Littlemiss74 · 13/11/2022 12:59

@pharmachameleon yes you’re right, I’ve recently started hrt & it’s definitely helped. I think it’s more the itchiness of the jumper/cardigan materials which I’ve always found to be honest. They make me itchy & then I start to feel hot & bothered but actually they did this before I was at this peri stage. I think I’m just more conscious now that I want to be comfortable but I also want to to wear some of the lovely jumper//cardis that are around. I don’t really like anything too tight fitting across my top half so the slouchy style or long cardigans appealed to me but maybe it’s not meant to be😊

OP posts:
pharmachameleon · 13/11/2022 13:05

@Littlemiss74 yep I hate the itchiness too!

Littlemiss74 · 13/11/2022 13:08

@TheGander but where can i find natural fibres without it costing the earth? I seem to spend hours now when shopping looking at all the labels on things I like and then being disappointed when they’re ‘hot’ materials😩

@Silverstreaks thank you, the thing is if I wear vest tops my arms are still exposed so any cardigan over the top often still irritates me. I guess I need long sleeve tops but then I find everything bunches up.

@Lentilweaver where are your cotton jumpers from? I am not small busted & really don’t know what style to wear anymore. I just feel fat in everything😕

@QueenOfTheMetaverse that sounds hard, yes I think you’re right about layers, it’s just finding affordable clothes that are not ‘hot’ material seems to be very challenging. Can you suggest anywhere I could try please?

TheGander · 13/11/2022 13:36

Yes I agree clothes shops are awash with synthetics. I don’t even bother with H&M, Boden, M&S anymore. I buy cotton t shirts from Petit Bateau. I scour eBay for vintage Scottish knitwear.

Wishiwasinmalta · 13/11/2022 13:58

An oestrogen patch.

Lentilweaver · 13/11/2022 14:02

I only wear natural fibres. Hard to find but I have had luck at Esprit, Uniqlo, Crew Clothing and Thought ( on sale).
I have this 3 D cotton knit from Uniqlo.www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/3d-knit-cotton-jumper-450503.html
Esprit has these in many variations every year. Look sold out but keep checking back because they get new stocks. www.esprit.co.uk/p/fine-knit-jumper-in-100--cotton-992EE1I304_400.html

QueenOfTheMetaverse · 13/11/2022 14:09

I've got some cotton (smart) T shirts from M and S collection which are great for work

I also have a cotton scarf that I can put on outside then take off inside when it's hot

I agree natural fibres are the way to go

Lentilweaver · 13/11/2022 14:14

I also have this from John Lewis. Not 100% cotton but still feels soft and non itchy for me. I really like JL for basic non fussy clothing. www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-cotton-blend-crew-neck-jumper/green/p6325427

QueenOfTheMetaverse · 13/11/2022 14:17

M and s has loads at the moment. I imagine primark and Uniqlo would have some too.

Here's some pure cotton T shirts. I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-straight-fit-t-shirt/p/clp60432860?intid=mobileappppdpshare

I wear the printed fitted ones with suits and they look really smart. They are 95% cotton and 5% elastane which is fine for me. I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-rich-printed-fitted-t-shirt/p/clp60548920?intid=mobileappppdpshare

TheGander · 13/11/2022 16:17

I wish the websites would let you filter by fibre type so you wouldn’t have to scroll forever.

TheGander · 13/11/2022 16:20

Actually I see that with John Lewis and H&M you can, so I take that back!

crispinglovershighkick · 13/11/2022 16:43

I'm on hrt which helps immensely but around the change of seasons it can still be tricky to get the balance right.

Lately it feels colder in the house than outside so I often get it wrong. The other day I was wearing a jumper dress with tights and a slip, kept taking layers off until it became obvious that the dress itself was too warm, then tried a long sleeved silk blouse which I couldn't bear and ended up in straight jeans and a short sleeved jumper. Not that that's any help to anyone Confused

OP have you looked at Kettlewell? I'm an autumn too and I like their tee shirts. I buy a lot of boys' cotton tees from Gap but I'm pretty flat chested.

lljkk · 13/11/2022 17:25

Of all the things I was mis-sold about (peri)menop, getting hot (or rather not getting hot in my case) is the most disappointing. I'd love to have over-warm moments as winter approaches.

Can contribute that as young person I often overheated, suspect that real (not synthetic) textiles and layering helped.
