Collagen - interesting Guardian article

I read this article yesterday and bought collagen supplements for DH (vegan) and myself (marine) today. I thought collagen supplements were pointless until I read this but they seem to be getting a bit more evidence behind then now (though nothing definitive)

Do you take collagen and have you noticed a difference?

I've been taking it everyday for the past few months. Noticed an improvement with my nails and hair so far

carefulcalculator · 07/11/2022 20:31

How do people take it - as a supplement?

Forfrigz · 07/11/2022 20:59

I've been taking it for a couple of years but not daily. Most supplements I take, others are perfectil and cod liver oil, I don't take daily but a few times per week.
I haven't noticed a particular difference but I do have good skin for my age. I'm 30 now, I often get asked for ID when entering bars etc. Not that that is proof I look young but most people are shocked when I tell them my age.
I think it probably has some effect but likely a minor one. I think that keeping well hydrated and avoiding the sun on your face are the two main things you can do for looking young. They are two things I've always done, anyway.
I think it's likely in the next few years they'll invent a treatment that fully restores lost collagen in the skin and it'll make so much money.

I find it helps my hip and knee pain, I take it pretty much daily. I have pretty nice skin, but also always wear spf 50 and use retinol. If I stop with the collagen my knees are so painful in a morning.

pippinsleftleg · 07/11/2022 22:40

Which brand do you take?

Martinisarebetterdirty · 07/11/2022 22:43

I current take ancient and brave because I can’t taste it in coffee, but have had wellguard with good effect in the past which is much cheaper, just I could sometimes taste it a bit.

Tryfull · 07/11/2022 22:44

I've had breast cancer and was told not to take collagen as apparently it increases the risk of cancer? I haven't researched this at all but I read it in some kind of cancer leaflet I was given (all a bit of a traumatic blur now). Might be worth looking into.

LaBellina · 07/11/2022 22:45

Been taking fish collagen for a few years now and even though I do not see much improvement on my skin, I do feel less pain in my back since taking it and any pain in my joints seems to recover faster.

ShadowoftheFall · 07/11/2022 22:48

Don’t take any supplements, but I do make sure I eat bone broth, organ meat, a range of sustainable fish and sea vegetables. Also fermented sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and kefir. Also get a lot of people surprised at my age.

Catslovepies · 08/11/2022 18:32

I've started taking the collagen and got a bit of indigestion- apparently it can have this effect on some people. Hopefully it will go away. DH and I are in our 50s and it would be great to get rid of our creaky joints. Any impact on skin and hair would be a nice bonus!

Like you Tryfull I have had breast cancer and was told not to take it.

interstatelovesong · 08/11/2022 18:47

I didn't know about the increased cancer risk, thats slightly concerning! I have taken Absolute collagen for about a year now, does anyone have any links to this?

Me too! A bit worried now...

DuncanBiscuits · 08/11/2022 18:56

It gives me terrible stomach trouble.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 08/11/2022 19:11

I’ve taken collagen for a few years now and have had breast cancer too, no one has ever told me not to take it. Would be great if someone has a link please.

ZealAndArdour · 08/11/2022 19:13

I use a collagen vanilla coffee creamer from Boots. Just have one a day, in a morning.

ItchySwissRoll · 08/11/2022 19:41

Just to clarify, my cancer was oestrogen positive so there's a direct link between collagen and oestrogen (the more collagen you have the more oestrogen you'll have). It didn't cause my cancer but it would have had a negative effect on my treatment and recovery. I'm on hormone treatment for the next few years and will continue to avoid it. I hope that helps, I wouldn't want anyone to be worried.

OtterOnToast · 08/11/2022 19:49

A lot of these collagen drinks/ supplements etc won't make it past the stomach wall. They're destroyed by stomach acid so that's something to consider too.

Tryfull · 08/11/2022 20:55

My cancer was also oestrogen positive. Sorry I don't remember who told me/where I read it but I was definitely told that I personally should avoid it.

Farmageddon · 08/11/2022 21:04

A cheaper option would be to just eat more good quality protein.

SlippinKimmy · 08/11/2022 22:10

I’ve been taking high strength collagen tablets for several years now. The main change I noticed is that my hair has got thicker - I also used to struggle to grow it and now I’m regularly gets down to my shoulder blades before I cut it. People have commented on my hair looking better as well, so I know it’s not just me. I doubt it’s a miracle pill for anti ageing, but I’m 43 and don’t really have any wrinkles apart from some shallow lines in my forehead. I also don’t have kids though, which I think is the best anti-ageing treatment out there 😁.

Well yes. I was so youthful pre kids. 2 DC in and I'm like mother gothel when the flower treatment wears off.

notapizzaeater · 08/11/2022 22:27

Ooh, I actually started taking collagen yesterday ! Glad to hear peoples experience. I've lost nearly 6 stone and my skins a bit stretchy so thought this might help

VanGoghsDog · 08/11/2022 22:32

I take collagen and glucosamine sulphate for my osteoarthritis, it does seem to help.

Eight tablets a day though! I can't use the powder because I don't drink or eat anything it can go in, I tried it in hot chocolate but it was disgusting, plus I don't want to drink hot chocolate every day anyway.

People regularly think I'm more than ten years younger than I am. But I tend to put that down to hair dye, not having kids, using retinol and sun block.

dontputitthere · 09/11/2022 10:37

@SlippinKimmy can I ask what brand you get? I've tried a few but either can't get past the taste or forget. If I knew it was actually a good brand I might try to stick to it! Thanks
