Collagen - interesting Guardian article

I read this article yesterday and bought collagen supplements for DH (vegan) and myself (marine) today. I thought collagen supplements were pointless until I read this but they seem to be getting a bit more evidence behind then now (though nothing definitive)

Do you take collagen and have you noticed a difference?

I've been thinking about starting collagen too, am I right that it seems to cost £20 per month?

My main cosmetic issue is my nails. Can anyone tell me if they've noticed a difference in nail ridges since taking collagen? Could find nothing on Google.

dontputitthere · 09/11/2022 10:37

@SlippinKimmy can I ask what brand you get? I've tried a few but either can't get past the taste or forget. If I knew it was actually a good brand I might try to stick to it! Thanks

Hi @dontputitthere , I use this one: pureclinica.com/products/ultracoll-and-hla-1500mg?variant=18691677061178&gclid=CjwKCAiAvK2bBhB8EiwAZUbP1Gd_0UKiK_xpQa0KNu93AJjgNzZ53sGwMdoC03MeX_LkBQaBrZ_SiRoC3igQAvD_BwE

you can also buy it on Amazon rather than directly from them. It’s reasonably pricey but good value for the amount of collagen you get per tablet. Plus it’s one tablet a day, so you don’t have to take loads in one go.

garlictwist · 09/11/2022 14:57

I also read this article and googled a few collagen pills. Too expensive for me - and I also can't help feeling it's a bit dodgy? It's not something that occurs naturally in any food so are we meant to consume it?

hamstersarse · 09/11/2022 15:01

If you buy some bones (v cheap) and eat the marrow, that is the ultimate source of absorbable collagen

sounds grim, but it’s actually pretty nice, presuming you aren’t vegan of course.

workshy46 · 09/11/2022 15:02

I know a big difference in my nails. I don't really know about skin as I use so many products its hard to pin point which one is actually working!!

Comeback25 · 09/11/2022 15:44

CosmopolitanPlease . I take collagen every day. Dose and Co in my coffee. My nails are now brilliant after they were peeling and ridged.

CosmopolitanPlease · 09/11/2022 18:05

@Comeback25 that sounds amazing. Don't suppose you have before and after pics? No worries if not, I've searched Google for any with nail ridges is all!

dontputitthere · 09/11/2022 21:06

@SlippinKimmy amazing thank you! I don't get on with the powders so hopefully this will work x

VanGoghsDog · 09/11/2022 22:56

I've not noticed any difference in my nails, the ridged ones are still ridged and the one that delaminates still does.

Forfrigz · 10/11/2022 07:37

I noticed a huge difference in my nails after taking Perfectil for a while. I believe it's the selenium content as apparently it's something that should be in our food but overfarming means it's no longer present in fruit and veg as much so most people are deficient.

Ablababla · 10/11/2022 08:21

thank you for posting this OP very interesting. I’ve always thought I wouldn’t be able to take this as a strict vegetarian. What brand is your husband using?

Catslovepies · 10/11/2022 09:46

I got him these Starpowa vegan ones from Holland and Barrett @Ablababla

@ Martinisarebetterdirty

Can you get me know what you use please??

Changerofthename1 · 10/11/2022 12:26

I am 110% sure that the link between cancer and collagen has been discredit it as somebody else said how would it get past the digestive stage ?

probably the answer is to eat more fish and oily good fats but like most things in our diet most of us do not.

ethelredonagoodday · 10/11/2022 12:34

Following with interest.

BlueChampagne · 10/11/2022 12:42

CND RescueRXx daily keratin treatment is great for nails if that's you're only beef. Doesn't remove ridges but does reduce breaking/splitting.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/11/2022 14:32

@Deathraystare I currently use Ancient and Brave true collagen, can’t taste in coffee, can in tea, doesn’t work at all for me in cold drinks (goes gloopy). I have used Wellguard before from Amazon but that is hit and miss for me on whether I can taste it or smell it in coffee, but it is much cheaper and did the same job for me.
I have not noticed a change in my nails they are still terrible! My skin is pretty decent but I use products so they could help, it’s the difference in my knees and hips that is untrue. I used to dance a lot and my knees were so painful before this.

Suzi888 · 10/11/2022 14:36

Any link to cancer would put me off massively.

happyinherts · 10/11/2022 14:38

I've used this as a face cream for years - it contains collagen. I am over 60 and have great skin (perhaps the best part of me!). My grandmother, who passed away at 102 recommended it to me. She used it regularly too. Cheap and cheerful from Superdrug.

my Mum used to eat a cube of jelly every day pheromones hair and nails , I think back in the day jelly was made from animal bones. Is that still true today?

Oooh I remember being told as a teen (90s) to do this to help my hair grow, I think these days its not animal based though, I may be wrong

cobblers123 · 10/11/2022 15:11

Made up a jelly yesterday, Hartley's and it contains pork gelatine.

I have been taking Absolute Collagen for about 3 weeks and can definitely see a difference in nail ridges. I am mainly taking it for hair and joints as I already use good quality skin care. I will give it 3 months before deciding whether to stick with it long term. Taste wise it is manageable if you just swallow the contents of the sachet and wash it down with a drink. Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, though.

CosmopolitanPlease · 10/11/2022 16:03

Thanks for the info re; nails @simbobs Smile

I've just had a look at absolute collagen and whilst it sounds great it seems to cost £54 a month. I can't afford that unfortunately, does anyone have any cheaper collagen recommendations please?

Squires84 · 10/11/2022 17:44

Hi, I was taking the marine collagen before I got pregnant and found it helped with my skin and hair loads. I’ve stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant. Is anyone else taking and finding your ok? X
